4.2 V8, auto/Tipper, my mate Rolfy got this CAYENNE S through an Auction site, it has had a ding in the front and it may have done a U boat impersonation at some stage.

There was nothing at all with the car to cast any light of it's previous life.

The distinctive stripes may jog someones memory, and the NURBURGRING badges also a bit different...

I'd be surprised if someone hasn't seen this thing around.

It's probably going to end up as a 4 WHEELER RAT ROD.....

	Thanks

Does it feel like your life needs something more challenging in it. Why not rebuild a Panamera engine that someone has already started on:

If the engine failure was indeed caused by the failure of the oil pump, I don't want to know what will need to be replaced internally.

OK guys, just having a rethink about my vehicles, and there may be room in my garage for a Cayenne to replace my Territory as a caravan tow vehicle + daily drive. I'd be looking for a diesel, wanting to spend up to, say, $65k. For this it looks like I can get a 2010-11 or thereabouts, sub 80kms, or pay a lot, lot less for a 150km mileage car. What are the things to watch out for, and I understand there were some changes with a general update - effectively Series 1 and 2???? However, noticed there aren't many non-black cars around, my preference is white.

cheers

Peter

Hi Guys, thanks for letting me join. I'm starting to look for a Cayenne Turbo, potentially the S. We are looking for something that is very fast, (faster, the better). We are looking at the cheaper end of the market, so usually with 150K's or more on the clock.

We think we've narrowed it down to an early 4.8 Turbo, or the 4.8 Turbo S. Is it worth the extra for the Turbo S? I am wondering if the extra power is just a little more boost and a tune? Or are there substantial differences?

Also, over the years of the early 4.8's, are there Model Year differences? Like DRL's etc? Electric Tailgate etc? Other useful features introduced?

Thanks for your time, Steph

Would it all have to match up again and would Porsche do this? Would you smell something fishy if you saw a new Macan with a replacement engine?

Thanks in advance

This morning was the maiden voyage of the rig. Nothing exciting, just off to the mechanic for the annual service before Summer. I have to say, I think it looked better with the Clubsport pulling but the Cayenne is certainly a better tow vehicle. For those interested in how it went, I can only tell you the around town performance and it was excellent. This is the Cayenne S with the 4.8 V8 and it barely raised a sweat. Setting the suspension to Sport mode hardened up the ride and made the car feel more stable but I could have left it in normal mode and it would have been fine. Off the line, the car hardly felt sluggish and you could barely notice the 1600kg hanging from the back while driving. My only gripe would be the prescription lense style side mirrors. While these are designed to eliminate the blind spot, the crazy amount of convex in them makes it hard to pick up detail in the mirror. This became evident when I ripped my mountain bike off the garage wall with the trailer guide polls when pulling the boat out. Very unimpressed and evidently I'm going to need a spotter when maneuvering in and out of the garage, something I've never needed with the Holdens. Overall it excelled at what it was designed to do. Can't wait for the weather to warm up.

I've had an engine vibration at 50km/h since I bought the car. When I first got it I got a wheel balance and allignment, Checked out the engine mounts and they all seemed fine, had a flexible joint added into the exhaust and the vibration was still there. The driveshaft 'upgrade' had been done with the bigger rubber mount (which I was told never fails) but last visit to the mechanic they suspected it was at fault :/ I had a pretty quiet Friday evening planned so what better time to get into the garage

After a bit of internet browsing, I decided to spend a little money and replace the top engine torque mount. You'll need 2x 16mm sockets, and a 12mm hex or square drive (Trade Tools had them on the shelf, and even ask "Did the Porsche centre send you here" before I even mentioned what it was for - they mustn't sell many):

1. Attach Cayenne to battery charger - within about 40 minutes they can flatten the battery with the interior lights etc - it's even written in the first few pages of the manual. Seems annoying with the battery under the passenger seat - fortunately there is a charging point under the bonnet. The negative terminal is closest to the front of the car.

1a. Remove the plastic trim (and manage to lose one of the plastic trim screws I replaced when I got the car - fortunately they're only $3 or so at Porsche and i've still got a stash of the male and female ones) and don't forget the T20 torx screw that holds the washer bottle to the surround trim

2. With the trim off it looks like this, Still can't tell there is a problem but I went through and replaced it anyway
\

3. This can't be good - I think I've found the reason for the vibration (that separated bit is meant to be mounted with rubber in the middle) it also managed to fall down beside the exhaust and make it difficult to get out - didn't find the plastic screw while i was down there though :()

4. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, I made sure to lightly tighten the bolts until the mount was roughly level then tightened to 40nm.

All back together and ready for the drive tomorrow I changed the Washer bottle lid while i was there too, something like $8 from FCP Euro (the torque mount was $50 or so at the same time)

Time for the all important test drive and it's finally fixed! So if you have a vibration in your 955 Cayenne before you resort to driveshaft, try the above (good troubleshooting is to kick the car into neutral while coasting, and see if the vibration is still there - if it's not there whilst in neutral it might be bad news, if it is still there give the top engine torque mount a try)

There was an interesting discussion started on another thread about older Cayennes starting to come on the market at around the 20 grand mark. That sounds like a bargain for any family man interested in V8 Powered Euro Truckster.

We also know the newer cars are harder to work on yourself and annoying little things tend to go wrong with them that often require a visit to a specialist mechanic.

So own up, who's gone and bought an older bargain Cayenne and how has it worked out?

Bit of background, new Cayenne Diesel with turbo wheels and a few other add ons, we bought our My16 just on 12 months ago and we have only done 9000km in that time so not anything of any distance or time to get to know the vehicle properly other than we have a Porsche and feel good driving it....isn't that the feeling we should have, works for me. Anyway time came to do a quick Sydney and return back to Nagambie...1600km or so in a bit over 24 hours one up, mmmm. First impressions of the standard seats were that they weren't that comfortable doing 1-2 hour drives, far better than the sports seats but not that, you know, comfy. Anyway after getting my bum in the seat for a bit over 3 hours it became bearable and after 5 hours it was...comfy, just had to settle into the contour and far different from our 300C.

Leaving at 5am and going cross country initially I had the opportunity to let it off the leash with high beam on, wow, the lights are absolutely frikkin awesome...plenty of roos up our way but the lights allowed me to look far right and left of centre, great when you're doing buck 30/40 into the dark. This thing handles really really well, I know it's not a traditional Porsche but whatever the factory has done to these jiggas, it works and well. No hesitation in throwing it into country road corners, hangs on, very direct and promotes great confidence. As stated above, we optioned the turbo 21" wheels which came with Yoki Advan rubber which so far has been superb. Bit noisy but that's to be expected with the low profile it runs.

The aircon I find to be very good, instant warm, great with fogged windscreen and the aircon controls are very easy to use. Speaking of the controls, I found my way around the cluster eventually but it's not the easiest to get use to, guess that comes down to the miriad of functionality.

I find the perfomance of the diesel engine exceptional, I have had many high powered cars and the Cayenne is up there with the majority with the bonus of 7.6l/100km economy. One area that needs addressing is the occasional turbo lag....takes a bit to get on the herbs every now and again, can be disconcerting when traffic is coming your way.

Not sure why these Sydneyites rag Melbourneites about their weather, as usual pissing down in Sydney, the wipers are fabulous, the intermittent timing is spot on, no matter downpour or drizzle.

Sat Nav is very good, helps if I listen!!!!!!!!! but love the graduated line to point of turn and is very accurate.

We have towed a 25' jayco van with ours and it does it standing on it's ear, plenty plenty of power and the suspension, non PASM, is really good.

The last 400 odd km of the trip was in tandem with a Macan GTS, very very nice toy. One thing that I noticed is the lights on low beam...I assume, from the Macan behind are very very bright as the car rides the bumps in the road.

In summary, I love my Cayenne more today than I did 3 days ago, it is the consumate tourer, makes me feel good when I drive it, I get asked or complimented on my car frequently which again is why we bought a Porsche and not any other SUV that could tow 3500kg.

Our sale experience ended up exceptional, ended up!!! as our first Porsche dealer experience left a huge amount to be desired but we then went to Porsche Brighton and they were and have been fabulous.

Our Cayenne is now the tow vehicle to our motorsport toy, a VY Clubby which we hope to meet other PFA members at a drive/track day in the future.

So glad we bought our Cayenne, cheers Racer

Just a quick explanation of an issue/solution in case someone comes across this issue, as it had me scratching my head for a while.

I've had my Cayenne S (with the 4.8L V8) for a couple of years. No major problems in that time.

In the couple of weeks before Christmas I noticed it was getting hot at the top of the 3km long steep hill I need to drive up to get home. temp on the gauge was getting up to about 3/4. After I got over the hill and coasted down the other side the temp would drop back to 1/2, like usual. I notice the engine bay fan is on after I turn the car off.

Cut to Christmas Eve. I'm driving back from somewhere up the hill, not looking at the temp gauge, and when I get home I notice a big pool of coolant under the car, and a trail leading up my driveway. Thankfully its just the overflow/expansion tank, but hell, it's xmas eve! So I order one that night from the US, and it arrives mid-way through Jan.

I fit it, refill it and go for a drive. Seems ok, temp stays on about 1/2. As I find out later, I just didn't drive it far enough for the thermostat to open (or not open, as I was about to find out)...

I drive it to and from work for a week in HOT weather (40+ days) and notice the temp is again creeping above the half way point. The fans are activating, but the engine bay fan is still on when I turn it off. It never used to do that. On the Friday the temp takes off, heading for the red zone, so in 40 degree weather, in traffic, I've got the windows down and heater on full blast. I figure it's a bleeding problem, so I book it in to get checked out.

Turns out it was a sticky thermostat. Got that replaced (as well as the water pump and pulley) and life is good again. Temp gauge sits just below half, regardless of the hill. The mech said the coolant was boiling in the block, but the radiator was cool. I guess the thermostat opened eventually (or was forced open), but it wasn't opening enough to keep the temperature from running away.
