Time to do an SMT on the GOR. Great Road. Great Drive.

New rules. Speed limit change. Was 80kmh.

Now changed to 20kmh near the <s>12</s> er remaining Apostles due to CNY

I reckon we should get a 50 P-Car convoy and drive at 10kmh.

To all you Taswegians and Targa-Tas fans that have done the road trip between Launceston - Scottsdale - Derby - St.Helens in recent times can you please let me know your thoughts on " GTS moments " or fun factor on taking that route as opposed to the faster route (Midland or National Hwy 1 to Hobart ) and turn-off at Conara junction and via St.Mary's pass ?

I have done the latter route from L'ton airport to St.Helens numerous times so I know that road well and know what to expect.

I know that the via Scottsdale route is a bit longer and has alot more twists and turns but not sure whether the section from Derby to St.Helens is so windy with log trucks etc that it becomes annoying as opposed to a fun enjoyable drive in the P.

Any feedback would be great. thanks

Hi all, proud owner of a 997.2 3.6 manual (which I found on this site) so cheers to PFA and its members.

Love the car but would like a bit more exhaust note. Appreciate any recommendations of what and where you might have done exhaust wise to your 997. I’m located in Sydney. Thanks in advance.

So prior to the whole marriage and kids thing, my wife and I did an epic road trip in our 911 from Vancouver down to LA via the Pacific Coast Highway which are amongst my fondest memories. I'm wanting to do a similar aussie trip next year with the 2 young kids in tow in the 911. Budgeting about a month to do it starting from Sydney.

Had a quick look on google maps and these are the top contenders so far starting from Sydney (all trips need to go via Dubbo Zoo):

-Drive via the south coast to Melb then onto Tassie return : 4000kms

	- Drive via the south coast to Adelaide then onto Perth : 5000 kms.

	- Drive up the coast to Cairns is about 3000kms

Just wonder if anyone has suggestions on a good route / locations that gives me good driving roads (minimal off road..) and enough interesting places to keep the family engaged. Open to getting to the destination and shipping the car home. At the moment, i'm leaning towards the Tassie option...

When I lived in the States I had an excuse to commute in my car 65 miles on pretty open highways once a week. Now I've had the poor thing in Melbourne since February but hardly had the chance to use it! I work from home now so no place to commute to, and unfortunately weekends are pretty busy with two young kids that need attention. But I could probably sneak away for a long lunch on a weekday. Can anyone suggest a place I could cruise to from Parkville that wouldn't have me sitting in traffic or stopping at a light every other block? I was thinking maybe down to St. Kilda or something could be good. Albert Park?? I'd just be happy to have a drive around, warm the oil and listen to the engine!

I'm a bike rider so I usually ride with mates mid week but this week it wasn't on so I took the 928 out for a spin. My wife invited herself along so we went to Peats Ridge via wyee huey huey rd briefly on the m1 then to Mangrove mountain Dam back to Kulnura for lunch and down Bumble Hill and home via Yarramalong Valley back on huey huey rd. Now a few weeks ago they retarred the hill to race track quality and is now one of the best hillclimbs on public roads. Local drivers do yourself a favour and do Yarramallong Valley and climb the hill before the trucks destroy it again Dobbo. Tried to load some pictures but they were to big.

So I'm in Sydney unexpectedly for a day without work over Easter and wondered if there were any scenic, preferably twisty and camera free drives? (not that I'm chasing silly speeds, just one less thing to worry about with double demerits!)

I'll have a Cayman for the day to put it through its paces, so a nice scenic cruise, a monsterous burger and a nice hotel for the night seems like the perfect mix!

Thinking I'll leave around 4pm on the Sunday to get back for around the same time, so perhaps 2-3 hours drive on the Sunday, an early start and a cruise on Monday and then leave wherever I end up around mid day for a cruise home via a nice stop off or two, some photo ops would be good to put up on my website which is needing some love.

I'm a Perth Lad so I've barely driven in Sydney so open to local knowledge!

	Cheers

So thinking of doing a Europe road trip early August this year. I know some guys on the forum have done that before. Only proviso is I may need to avoid Italy as my mate will be drawn and quartered if he goes there without his wife.

	1. Where to rent p-cars? I can leave from any country but my mate is based in London if that helps.

	2. Any suggestions for routes? I just want to do Stuttgart for Porsche and Mercedes.

	3. Spa and The Ring?

	4. 10-12 days.

Any help or advice appreciated, I've just started researching today!

He's a car lover and hasn't seen or driven the GT4. We don't catch up very often these days so we'll share the driving and make an epic adventure of it. So we're looking for a route that takes in some great roads.

About 30 years ago, we drove his Weber fed Datsun up through the Snowy Montains and had a ball. So this is a bit of a recreation. I was 16 and got to drive bits of it which helped cement my passion for fast (well it felt fast!), modified cars.

Any tips of places to drive, roads to avoid? A bit of twisty hill driving and some coastal stuff would be good. Tarmac only, we'll need premium ULP every 400km or so. GT4 has no spare tyre so nothing too knarly. Should be an epic trip - I'm not one for garage queens, the GT4 will collect some patina no doubt but what the hell, it's built to #getoutanddrive

I Imagine we'll need 2 to 3 days to get there then I'll probably bomb home down the Hume after a couple of days in Coffs.

Any tips appreciated.

The Putty Road

Although on a few occasions I did almost regret asking my girlfriend along as she's quite a vocal passenger... she would be perfect for a job in road saftey, she is certianly my onboard foot brake :-).

Not much in the way of decent cafe stops unless you want to hang out with all the bikies in leather so we ended up going for a nice spot of lunch at a winery in the Hunter Valley.

All in all a great day out in the car, great weather, good roads and a nice spot of lunch to finish it off.

Tonight the car is going to get a well deserved clean and polish...

A little while ago the council totally resurfaced this road that goes from Terry hills down to church point and then onto the water. It is as smooth as can be for most of the way. I drove down it again this week with the suspension on sport and it was so wonderful. If you are in the north, go and give it a go.

We recently went up to Lorne - Apollo Bay looking for interesting stop overs/cafes etc and of course, roads that allowed for very spirited driving

Having noticed a very interesting twisty road we had a blast, even though it was a busy Friday afternoon.

Does anyone have a favourite for that Otway - Apollo Bay - Lorne region?

And the full road

Hoping to make my way to Sydney next week from Brisbane in the 997 Turbo. Was hoping to go to Armidale for a night stop and then down the ThuderboltsWay and Bucketts Way the next day.

Just wondering if anyone from the forum has travelled these roads recently. What is their condition like? If they are "pot-hole central" I might take the Pacific Mway and a different car.

Suggestions for overnight stops, food stops, must see view points along the way are welcome.

Heading to a mates winery at Curlewis later today for the annual catchup. I've managed to negotiate an early leave pass so I plan to take the ferry to Queencliff then a quick blast down Great Ocean Road and back to Curlewis for the arvo. Haven't been down GOR for years.

any tips on the best bits and any sections to avoid? I read somewhere recently about some rebuild works but not yet started? Am I kidding myself about being able to enjoy it around midday......

Took off to Berry, left the family at home. Just me, the Targa, some old tunes and the road. Before I knew it I had done two tanks of fuel and that was just the way there. Might have been a few sneaky side roads. The roads down south are just awesome, the new road into Berry just opened up (no by pass yet)... beautiful piece of road but the speed creeps up there! Stayed at The Berry Lake House - my kind of heaven!

My wife had a couple of days off work so we decided we would have a couple of days away.

One condition was i would pick the roads. Day 1. Home, Sandy Hollow, Bylong, Mudgee

The first road i wanted to do again was Bylong Valley Way, anyone who hasn't needs to. Overall the road is in very good condition and mostly 100km apart from the couple of range passes with some nice twisties to keep it interesting. First stop Bylong, it's a blink and you will be through it sort of place, we were ready for a coffee by now and there is about 18 bikes parked up when we arrive at 10.20am with 220km done. This has one general store that sells fuel as well.

From Bylong we head towards Rylstone but turn off before this at Lue Rd and head towards Mudgee, this is a great road as well and lots of work has been done to improve it.

This way to Mudgee from Newcastle is at least 40kms shorter than any other way.

Lunch at the Mudgee Brewery is a great feed with one of their beers to wash it all down.

Day 2. Mudgee, Hill End, Sofala, Kelso, Tarana, South Bowenfels, Katoomba

I am pleasantly surprised when i hit Hill End road a couple of kms out of town, it's foggy and with that i thought there may have been a few furry critters still about so it's steady as she goes. I come across some roadworks but thankfully it's the verge getting some work. The fog has now cleared and it's full speed ahead, what a great road, some blind corners and crests and the vegetation and rocks form the verge, it's fast and flowing and i found it perfect and the turbo loved the cool crisp morning air, i could hear the waste gate opening echoing of the rocks.

A pass over the hills keeps it more interesting and as i am explaining to the handbrake in the passenger seat how the turbo works and, "makes the car speed up so much", two grey Kangaroos casually cross the road in front of me and it's a good reminder that i keep on my toes.

The road unfortunately turns to shit for a good kilometer and i don't know where to point the car, the only bad spot in the road, just out of Hargraves i think it was.

From here into Hill End it's the same up and down and fast flowing roads, this was probably the highlight for me driving this road.

Hill End is an interesting place and would have been a sprawling town back in the gold rush, well worth the drive.

The view coming into Hill End.

From here it's on to Sofala and the road is still very good and doesn't disappoint with more of the same on what looks to be a recently re-surfaced road, once again 100kmh and this time more open roads seeing further ahead. Great road, Hill End to Sofala.

Sofala looks to be full of history as well but we don't stop and drive on the Sofala Rd and head to Kelso just out of Bathurst. I look across and in the distance there is the familiar letters of Mount Panorama plastered on the side of the mountain, sadly not this trip. I turn left and head along the highway and onto O'Connell Rd then left onto Tarana Rd, this was my first mistake.

If you come out this way DO NOT take Tarana Rd to Tarana, take Mutton Falls Rd like i should have. The road narrows severely and there is no shoulder to let the people past that are laughing at me in their 4WD's, very picturesque though.

I'm just glad the school bus wasn't on the way home, i could not wait to get off this road and glad i made it unscathed.

From here it's Sodwalls Rd, and this is familiar to me, past the dam and on to the Hwy then Katoomba where we spend the arvo walking some tracks around the 3 sisters.

The road works out of Lithgow are horrendous with 40 and 60 km zones.

Day 3. Katoomba, Penrith, Windsor, Wisemans Ferry, home

Breakfast in Leura just down the road from Katoomba then down the Great Western Hwy because we needed to be home by mid afternoon. When we got to Windsor via the Northern Rd the Putty was calling but i decided to head to Wisemans Ferry instead as i will be doing the Putty in a couple of weeks. (don't want to over do it)

I found the road to Wisemans Ferry from the Somersby end is getting really rough.

A stop off at the Stone House Cafe for some pale ale on the way into the Ferry, an uneventful trip back into Somersby then onto the freeway and home.

A bit of a boring day in the car really, I think i got spoiled by the lack of traffic on the back roads.

A fantastic couple of days driving with 955kms racked up on the car and loved every minute, averaged 10ltrs per 100 for the trip as well.

As someone else said, get out and drive.

What a fantastic state. My wife, the 996 and my self have just completed 2016 kilometres around the beautiful apple isle. We decided to go anti clockwise this time as we went the opposite in about 1992 in a hire car. The weather was fantastic, about 20 degrees every day and plenty of sun for tops off!! It is still as beautiful as I remember. I could not believe the amount of road kill though. There is something deceased and decaying every 50 metres. Also blackberries, they are everywhere. Other than that what a great drive.

Cheers Steve

After I found this road whilst heading to a gig with a loaded up van in the hills a few months ago, I finally got to drive Montacute road in the 911 yesterday

Mainly 2nd and 3rd gear stuff at a fair speed, but the tarmac for the first couple of km's is billiard table smooth. I don't know the road at all, yet I left a couple of sportbikes for dead. Man that was fun!

I'd planned the whole day of just driving as many roads in the hills as I could all day (Montacute, Chain of Ponds etc etc) before I go back to work on Monday, yet ofcourse at the top of the Montacute hill, I heard a rumbling sound from the right rear as I went through left corners that got louder the harder I pushed. Well there goes that great day then. Ugh!! Dare say it's a wheel bearing or driveshaft, so I crawled back down Norton Summit road, and dropped into see Craig at Buik Motorworks for him to have a listen. I couldn't hear it whilst just driving, yet it was still there, albeit much quieter, when turning left

Other than that, it was an awesome run up Montacute road. I was getting cocky and thought I was Jacky Iycx for a minute, then had an 'Ah fruit' moment heading into a 25kph turn at a decent clip (my missus laughed when she heard my 'moment' commentary on the dash cam at home), but the car was just glued to the road. Awesome stuff! The road is not that long, but if you were to head up there, then across the top towards Norton Summit road, you'd have some fun for sure. Plenty of pushbike riders up that way, though we do have the Tour Down Under here next week. I even got a very enthusiastic thumbs up from one bloke. Must have been a Porsche fan

Next road I MUST do is Chain of Ponds from Houghton, then up to Paracombe. That will be fun
