  1. Its very sad indeed, Shane is going to buy it back so we can put her back together. There is a lot of parts missing, The suspension/wheels and brakes have not been found yet. Some panels ended up in Adelaide. Time for an update on the theft. The car was missing from the Kennards storage for some 8 days before being reported stolen. It was only reported missing when a worker at Kennards was checking CCTV for another theft and they noticed sparks from an oxy set some time in the early morning. As the story goes a passcode was used to gain access to the kennards facility and what is believed to be a commodore with stolen number plates accessed another storage unit and pulled out an oxy set and begun to remove the wheel lock and hitch lock on Shanes nevco trailer. This is where it gets interesting. The thieves then released that the commodore did not have a tow ball and could not tow the car and trailer away. Then then left and returned with a prado with stolen number plates and took the trailer and car. Police went back through the last year of when that particular passcode was used and sure enough the prado was used to gain access. The thieves mother , owned the prado and the storage locker where the oxy set was kept. The police knew that the son was in possession of the prado but needed more evidence. The police tried for a month to get the mother in for questioning and she only finally appeared when they threatened her with breaching a good behaviour bond which she was on. Then unbelievably on the day before she was to be interviewed i got a message in the early morning that the car had been put on gumtree, a quick call to Shane and the police and they got in process a search warrant for the property in Cabramatta where the car was believed to be. All they found was the bonnet but the guy gave up someone else at liverpool and they found the car. its in a pretty sad state but i think if Shane can get it cheap enough then we can help him put it back together. Its got a engine still in it but everything else is pretty much gone. The son was picked up a month or so ago in another stolen car and admitted he stole the 944 and trailer. now serving 8 months

Superseded to 75w-90 GL5 , even in the Porsche ( printed by Porsche ) Technical specifications booklet for the 944S 87-88 , 944S2 89-91 , 944turbo 85-91 , printed Jan 1991 it states } 75w - 90 GL5 OR ( being late 1990 / early 1991 when written / printed ) Porsche knew that 75w-90 was not easy to get in a lot of countries ( 29 / 30 years ago ) , so they still gave you the old choice of SAE 80 GL4 Regards Bruce Buchanan Buchanan Automotive

Wakefield Park , Goulburn NSW , yesterday 27th April , round 3 of the PCNSW Supersprint championship , early start for those driving from Sydney to Wakefield Park , for us, up at 3 am & hit the road by 3.50 am ( Nth Beaches ) to be at wakefield Park by 7.15 am , perfect weather for a track day , it was minus 1 deg cel at 6am but naturally it being a sunny day at Wakefield it quickly warmed up by 9am . 45 cars entered which is not a big number but it does mean the individual competitors can get in more laps during the day in their respective speed groups . A big thank you to all the volunteers who drove all the way to Wakefield to help out as flag marshals etc , great to see the Porsche 928 guys turn up to help out I haven't posted about round 2 at Eastern Creek a few weeks ago as I had no results to post as I had no idea who was in what class , but thats been resolved now Sean Buchanan in his 1986 951 ( 944 Turbo ) had a very mixed day and unusually we had another one of our customers & friend , Chris Moriarty drive Sean's car at Wakefield as well ( Chris has a mildly modified 951and is off the road at the moment ) And this is where it gets interesting , Chris's 951 has ABS as standard ( its a 1990 year model 951 ) and quite understandably Chris just didn't realise the difference the ABS makes to how a car behaves near the limit of traction ( under brakes in the entry to track corners or mid way through the corner at track speed ) , Sean decided to skip the 1st speed group 1 session and let Chris go out in his speed group 3 session & poor Chris had a terrible time trying not to loose the rear end of Sean's 951 going into corners as Sean's 951 has never had ABS ( but we warned Chris this naturally ) , but Sean's 951 has different final drive ratios & a 4 plate motorsport LSD & Chris's 951 doesn't ( as yet ) , so both cars feel very different , let alone both cars are different capacities ( 2.5L 8 valve engine compared to 3.0L 16v ) , Poor Chris just felt he couldn't come to grips with Sean's 951 ( Sean even turned the boost down to make it a lot more user friendly ) Then Sean finally went out in his first track session for the day and Sean appeared to drive well in amongst a group of GT3's etc , but after 4 laps Sean came back in saying there is something wrong with the back end of his 951 & from the symptoms is sounds like a failure of the LSD plates , no big deal , at least we could still drive her back home & on the road it drove perfectly fine because the 4 plate motorsport LSD can only be tested on the track at track cornering speeds with the big R spec tyres on, and on the road its completely out of the question But even with Sean's 951 behaving way below its norm , in those short 4 laps and in GT3 traffic Sean still managed 3rd place in his class Note } Each track session for each speed group ( usually 10 cars at a time ) normally does about 6 laps or so Here are some interesting stats, particularly the laps covered during the day in multiple sessions } Kevin Ryan , 991 GT3 , Class = 1 A , Laps =36 , best time = 1.05.5010 Owen Wiseman , 991 GT3 , Class = 1A , Laps = 35 , best time = 1.05.6200 Sean Buchanan , 951(1986 ), Class = 1A , Laps = 4 , best time = 1.06.4550 Brett Hobson , 996GT3 , Class = OA , Laps = 35 , best time = 1.06.5550 Andrew Hassell , 991GT3 , Class = 1 A , Laps = 22 , best time = 1.07.1990 Regards Bruce Buchanan Buchanan Automotive

Hi Erikki , here are the part numbers for the pressure plate in regards to the 968 & the 964 } The correct 968 pressure plate ( genuine Porsche ONLY ) = 964 116 027 90 = Green Stripe painted on the pressure plate , this fits the 968 NA ( all year models ) & is also the correct pressure plate for the 1990 - 1991 964 ( 911 ) NA The correct pressure plate for the 964 ( 911 ) NA ( 1992-1994 ) = 964 116 028 90 = Blue stripe painted on the pressure plate , Note } the 964 116 028 90 pressure plate is the one that comes in the after market Sachs kit for a 968 , because that is all Sachs makes & hence why these days 98% of all 968 Porsche's out there are running with the higher clamping force" incorrect " 028 90 pressure plate , because for many , many years thats all you could purchase Note 2 } The painted identification stripes are only on the Genuine Porsche pressure plates ( from memory ) I will find out tomorrow ( at work ) if the correct Green stripe ( 964 116 027 90 ) is still available from Porsche Germany ( this is not a aftermarket part )

Hi Guys, As you may or may not know a customer of ours Shane runs a 1986 Porsche 944 turbo that we prepared for targa, after completing targa West he returned to store the car at a kennards storage facility in Penrith where it was stolon only a few days later. I can't say too much about the car at the moment but i want to put a post out there with a few very identifiable parts if they hit the market or if any of you guys know someone that has been offered them. MCS shocks and springs. We have about 6 cars running these and to be honest there would maybe be one or 2 more sets in aus. Genuine Fuchfelge 17x9 rims 5 in total. Again these are pretty rare in Australia. Custom control arms. Recaro Pole position seats. There is a heap of custom parts on this car but i figure they would try and sell these items first. It was stolen on a Nevco trailer as seen in the pictures and we can only assume the thieves were after the trailer as the car is very identifiable If you guys see any of these items out there please let us know. 02 9948 2651 Regards Sean

Interestingly , in Australia in 1982 ( the first model 944 ) they were around $ 42,000 or $43,000 ( with no options ) , but remember these early 944 models came with NO A/C , no power steering , no power seats , early 924 interior etc etc , very different car the 944 became from model year 1986 on wards & the price went up from 1986 because of the more standard options , even the cars frame / floor was different from 1986

  12. I remember back in 1987 or 1988 at the Porsche dealership ( Sydney ) we sold a new 911 cabriolet with Turbo Look and other options and that car was over $ 200,000 + on road costs ( then )

I think its more to do with the lack of knowledge on just how rare some of the Australian delivered ( new ) last century front engine d Porsche cars are , I have been working on Porsche cars for some 42 years & even I had no real idea just how rare some of these cars were , for example the one ( 1 ) 1987 ( H) year model 944 2.5 NA or even my 1993 year model 968 coupe ( 6 ) imported and sold new in Australia , I had no idea that the numbers were so low , I knew that the 1991 944S2 was rare , so much so I was surprised that there was 6 of them imported officially , I have only seen ( 1 ) and that was when it was new on the showroom floor back at SVM & never ever seen or head of another Australian delivered 1991 944S2 since The 1991 ( M) 944S2 Cabrio , two ( 2 ) were imported officially or even the 1987 ( H ) 944S , same thing , only ( 2 ) officially imported , I knew there were some imported , we even sold a new 1987 944S ( in 1987 ) , but I never thought there was just 2 of them for the whole of Australia It reminds me ( in some respects ) in 1989 , we ( SVM / Porsche dealership I worked at ) sold 2 ( at least ) x 911 speedsters narrow body ( 3.2 speedster narrow body ) , at the time we just thought these must be as common as anything , but later I leaned just how rare a 1989 R/H/D 3.2 speedster was in narrow body & yes we ( SVM ) sold a few more wide body speedsters ( they were more expensive naturally ) Once more people find out the rarity ( just takes time ) I think people will realize

With the hydraulic engine mounts on the 996 & 997 , the engine "Hangs" from the mounts where as most other cars , the engine "Sits" on the engine mounts , there are two main symptoms of engine mounts going bad on a 996 or 997 A ) If the 996 or 997 has a tiptronic transmission ( automatic trans ) up to and including the 2008 year model , with the engine running , at idle in gear ( engine under idle load ) the car will exhibit far more harshness than what the same car exhibited when the same car was new , meaning the engine mounts are No Longer isolating the engine from the car chassis/frame , hence the harshness If the same car has a manual transmission , it may not be as severe at idle because the car is not in gear under slight load , but when pulling away from a standing start , the harshness comes through & at other load conditions as well Note } Hydraulic engine mounts degrading is a gradual thing , meaning it creeps up on you over a long period of time & hence why owners know there is something not quite right , can can not put a finger on what it is B ) Because the engine "Hangs" from the engine mounts you will often see that the exhaust tips( either side of the rear of the car ) have different clearance to the body ( comparing left to right tips ) , sometimes you will see more clearance on one side only or when both mounts are as bad as each other the exhaust will just appear to hang lower on both sides Porsche chose to design in differences in the hydraulic engine mounts on different 997 year models , to get desired results ( as smooth as possible ) The below is just talking about the 997 NA ( not the turbo ) 997 375 049 03 was used up to and including the 2006 Cabrio 997 375 049 05 was used from 2007 & to 2008 Cabrio 997 375 049 04 was used up to 2006 coupe 997 375 049 06 was used from 2007 to 2008 coupe Note 2 } If the car is a 2007 or 2008 Cabrio with Tip transmission & if the new genuine engine mounts are still available from Porsche , I would try to stay with these mounts to bring the car back to how it was new & to use anything else looks bad on resale later Note 3 } With road car engine mounts , they ( the mounts ) have to do two main jobs , to connect the engine to the body & to eliminate as much harshness as possible , hence why more expensive cars have sophisticated hydraulic mounts Note 4 } Kms traveled has no real world relation to the life of hydraulic engine mounts , hard acceleration events from the standing start will always result in less life from hydraulic engine mounts , remember the engine twists on acceleration & its the mounts trying to keep this twist under control , so in reality a car with no engine mounts at all ( not practical ) , the engine would want to spin leaving no drive to the transmission So because city / suburban cars do a hell of a lot more stop start traffic conditions as compared to a country car ( lots of standing start acceleration events ) , we have always seen hydraulic engine mounts in the Porsches ( all different models beginning with the 928S from 1983 ) fail long before the same models that have done much less ( standing start ) acceleration events ( same Kms ) but cruisey country driving by an owner who is happy to accelerate modestly
  17. So now there is no spark coming out of 1 lead or all of them? work backwards to the coil. did you remove the cap and inspect both he cap and rotor. Make sure the leads are in the correct positions on the cap Regards Sean
  18. Thats a pretty good price for a dealer. Just for reference this is our normal cost of a basic oil change on a 997. mobil 1 $158+gst, filter, $38.90+gst and labour $192+gst that includes having a good look over the car, noting any faults, scanning the ECU for any faults, tyre pressures, top up all fluids and check lights etc. total of $388.9+gst For brakes you can go genuine or probably a better option would be OEM/aftermarket from either Autohaus or BWA. a quick check would see if you need pads and or discs There will be other things to consider too, if it hasn't been done, you really should do an gearbox/differential oil change. is it a manual or tiptronic. We are baffled as to why but dealers seem to thing the auto oil last the life of the car. We just changed the auto fluid on a 997.1 yesterday at 65,000kms and it was black. probably the quickest way to destroy the poor transmissions Regards Sean
  19. good find, make sure you buy the correct beru leads. Bob whymms or autohaus should stock them. there are aftermarket versions but in all honesty they are absolute rubbish. Stay away from any carbon leads. Regards Sean
  20. Hi Finnystew, There could be a lot of issues going on, may be a good idea to check past maintenance and see what has been replaced in the last few years. They are now at the age where the factory wiring harnesses are getting on and in most cases deteriorating. check for cracked connector boots. Particularly in your case around the throttle position sensor, idle stabiliser valve, NTCII sensor(coolant temp) and speed reference sensors. While you are at it also have a good look at the injector plugs. they may seem OK but because of their design previous repairers will grab at the wire harness to remove the plug instead of disconnecting the clips. in almost all cases you will find the wires inside the connecters to be frayed. Being an S the throttle position sensor is in a difficult position. I would want to check for operation of the sensor at the ECU first before trying to get access to it. Basically its inlet manifold off to get at it. It was also common for tuners to remove the air mass meter and adjust the spring inside to add or subtract fuel as needed. this will be evident if there is silicon holding the black cap on the air mass meter. It may also be an air mass meter issue. They are very long lived but nothing lasts forever Regards Sean

Do you mean 245/45/16 ? , the 245 / 45 / 16 size is the correct for the rears on the following 911 Turbo ( 1986 - 1989 ) 944 Turbo S 928 S4 & 928GT up to and including 1991 A 245 / 50 / 16 tyre ( 50 aspect ratio ) raises the rear of the car & looks way too baggy , but worse it raises the final drive ratio , slowing acceleration

I really do not know when it was discontinued , you could email the supplier in the UK ( new old stock ) and see if they know if there is a production date on the box the clutch plate comes in , even a date from a Porsche dealer on the "possible last date sold " is only a guide because the actual production date could easily be 10 years before that I know we stopped buying the rubber centered clutch plate for these at least 24 to 25 years ago ( maybe more )

Its actually a engine firing impulse noise that the transmission simply transmits to the human ear , hence why Porsche installed the dual mass flywheel to all the manual transmission with less than 8 cylinders beginning with the 964 & then the 968 , when this technology became available , a dual mass flywheel very effectively dampens out the firing impulses , hence why the 964 ,968 , 993 , Boxster , 996 that were just road cars had them , it makes a massive difference Note } Firing impulse noise ( with no dual mass flywheel ) from manual transmissions gets worse with less engine cylinders ( but large pistons ) , meaning a 3.0L 4 cylinder engine has a big potential to cause these noises at low RPM , a 3.0L 6 cylinder engine slightly less , a 3.0 L 8 cylinder engine even less & 3.0 L 12 cylinder engine even less still & a 3.0L 16 cylinder engine way way less still , its just basic physics The early rubber entered clutch plate ( be it 911SC , 911 3.2 , 944 2.5 NA , 944S , 944S2 3.0L ( not 951 or 911 turbo ) were in a way the early forerunner to the dual mass flywheel ( manual trans only ) , this was to make the car more user friendly( quiet ) & more like a current to that era Japanese car , meaning as quite as possible in the driveline When the 3.2 911( G50 ) came out in 1987 , customers who purchased them( leased mainly ) complained about the very noise that you are referring to ( BUT ) with a rubber entered clutch , could you imagine the complaints if their 911 ( 1987 - 1989 ) came from Porsche with a spiring centred clutch plate ( OH my GOD , the sky would of caved in ) , how do I know ? , I was working at a large Porsche dealership from 1977 to 1994 and it was quite interesting to see how many people ( who leased these cars ) complained about a noise that could not be rectified , but made a whole lot worse once the rubber entered clutch plate was discontinued . Why was it discontinued ? Answer = because if you drive the car a little bit aggressively or badly( poor driving style ) , the rubber entered clutch section would just break & hence why it was discontinued If you can still buy a new ( old stock ) rubber entered clutch plate , and you are that concerned , then you have no choice , you have to buy it and install it , but remember if you can buy one its already quite old & its rubber Regards Bruce Buchanan Buchanan Automotive
  24. Just for reference we have had a few customers buy the GAZ shocks and you get what you pay for. The range of adjustment was quite small, they didn't last long. To be honest the Konis are really the only entry level kit there is, bilstein coil over kits for a bit more sporty/track focus but they need a re-valve to be streetable , the nice shocks are the Moton and MCS. Wouldn't bother with KW, too many broken components. does the GAZ kit come with springs. Also consider deleting the torsion bars, no handling downsides, benefits every which way you look at it. Unless you are going to run the car in SS in Targa Tasmania and they need to be in there. Say for instance you go with 200 pound springs on your new rear shocks with torsion bars installed and find they are not to your liking and go up 100 pound, you will need to reindex again. consider saving a bit more and getting a better outcome Regards Sean
