It was only natural that Steve McQueen’s charisma, effortless style and discerning taste would translate in the specification of his cars. It’s hardly surprising, then, that McQueen’s devoted followers are still taking inspiration from his legendary automotive fleet…

King of Cool meets King of The Ring

Steve McQueen’s Porsche 911 S and this menacing new 911 R might be separated by 46 years, but their similarities are easy to see. The Hollywood legend’s classic Porsche – which serves as the inspiration for this Slate Grey 991 – starred in his passion project film Le Mans in 1971. The motorsport thriller was an indulgence in his true love, racing – the subject of one of his most famous quotes, which is now emblazoned on the 911 R’s carbon-fibre sills. While McQueen’s 911 S was sold at auction in 2011 for 1.375m US dollars, this modern homage was recently for sale with Classic Driver dealer Eleven Cars and garnered so much interest that the dealer could not cope with the number of enquiries.

The le mans movie in the 70tys in the 917 , He blew all his money making it and never got a quid back. And had a battle ship Grey 930 built for him by Porsche ,a 911S and a couple of other 911 cars, He smashed a 917 in the movie and lucky to get out.

His 930

We believe we've just seen an auction price record set for a stock Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera that'll hold for a long time, though it shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone. The Porsche 930 in question was owned by Steve McQueen, and over the weekend the car that belonged to the King of Cool brought $1.95 million at the Mecum Auctions sale in Monterey on Saturday.

Here's the story behind McQueen's 1976 Turbo Carrera.

The legendary actor was long known as a gearhead long before he purchased this 930 Turbo, chassis 9306800408, just four years before his death. The Slate Gray example came equipped with an early production non-intercooled 3.0 liter engine, equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The car was special ordered though Bob Smith Porsche in Hollywood with features like dual mirrors, a sunroof, black sport seats and a limited-slip differential. Those were the factory options.

He didn't smash a 917 in the movie!

The crash scene was a setup shot and was a Lola t70 dressed up as a 917 with David Piper driving. He actually lost a part of his leg after getting a deep cut and brake fluid and debris got in and his leg became infected.

The 930 was Slate Grey (as was the 911s) and was a special order through a Porsche dealership in LA.

Arh someone actually reads posts, You are quite right David did loose part of his leg in the accident and it  finished his international racing career the Lola T70 Mk 3b that was crashed was his normal choice of race car, Until 69 when he raced the 917 at the Nürburgring 1,000km in 1969 with frank gardiner Later that year he gave the 917 its first international victory, when he and Attwood triumphed in the Kyalami 9 Hours.
