The shaft isn't long enough, as I have to lay the seat back due to my height. I've got long arms, but I'd prefer the knob closer so I don't have to reach for it all the time. One of life's little struggles I spose

Regarding shifter extension, there is a seriously talented fabricator out of the U.S called Jim Tidwell who manufactures some amazing stuff for older Porsches:

P.S.  The shift lever extension outlined above is for the classic tubular shift lever.  I'm sporting one on my 915.

Love it when you talk dirty.  Ghetto fix for the concertina cover.  Turn inside out.

  • 2 weeks later...

Metal finisher didn't work out so I'm back to square 1...I did strip and clean the rear qtr windows and they came up really well.  As you can see I've got a green versus clear glass thing going on.  Will go green I reckon.  I let the steel fixings sit overnight in a jar of white vinegar to take all the corrosion off.  I'll be taking the door window frames back to bare metal this weekend so hopefully the next metal finisher I deal with knows what they're looking at.

I started experimenting with making a 'backdate strip' for the dash.  Needs to be custom because the ones you can buy are stupidly expensive and my dash will be non standard.  In the middle part of the dash I'll have all the switch gear on the RHS of the wheel (lights, hazard, rear demister, ignition), the stereo is under the seat and connects via bluetooth to the phone so all that is on the whole dash to the left of the steering wheel are the HVAC controls.  I'm deleting the glovebox as I suspect it'll be a PITA with how I want to do things and will also disrupt the really clean look I'm after.

This is the kind of thing I mean

This is my version using 12x50x3 angle with the 50 dimension ripped down to 30mm for the prototype.  This allows me to size it exactly how I want and all the materials are free at work, as wel las the equipment to cut and machine as necessary.

IMG_2002-L.jpg

First I got a piece of Vic Ash veneer on 3mm MDF and laid it in the channel to see how it looked.  The 3mm wall works well and just needs a little radius putting on it as well as polishing before it gets bright anodised.

Then I remember we had some veneer samples laying around and decided to cut that to size and lay it up directly to the 3mm aluminium.  In this case American Walnut.  I used non water based contact adhesive and it sticks like shite to a blanky, but I understand it never dries and can lift if exposed to heat like a car interior so will probably use epoxy on the real thing if I go this way.  I've got the the same issue with the veneer laid up onto MDF as the glue they use is heat activated and it can be reactivated so this is another reason to just expoxy it down to the aluminium.  Because of the 3mm thick returns on the angle that go underneath the flat bar piece I reckon it'll be OK to use 1.6mm in place of 3mm which will make the whole thing less chunky and heavy.  Just means the 12mm part of the angle needs to be machined down to 6mm to give the aluminium a 2mm standoff from he face of the veneer.

My interior theme is BLACK.  Different shades, textures, sheens and gloss levels, and with some metal highlights.  so next thing was to see how the veneer came up with some black stain.  The raw veneer and MDF sucked it up and it gave a really consistent coverage.

Next was the clear coat and I decided to give gloss a go.  This is the first coat that needs sanding and re-coating another 2 times before it's done.  I think it's a great look.

IMG_2034-L.jpg

I got some new 964 dash vents as the dash has to be mint.  These are much larger than the earlier vents and with my electric AC they will flow a lot more air and hopefully help it really perform.  They also look so much better.  $550 later....and I had to superglue something back on as it dropped off in the box

IMG_2045-L.jpg

You get the idea of how it will look from these images.  The vents are 67mm high and 100mm wide so the dimension of the strip only has to increase by 1mm for the metal frame to run through over the top and bottom of the vent, Singer style.

I got a set of these from the Targa and will use them as templates for the cutouts and shapes I want around the steering wheel, for the HVAC controls and the ignition etc.
