3.2 Carrera Market Watch

Car looks very nice and original and price looks pretty good to me as well, good luck with it all.

I purchased my first car from the Healey Factory and I'm often surprised how well their cars are priced against other classic outlets with similar stock.

If nothing has changed, I believe they always use Auto Coupe for mechanical work and inspections organised by them.  I bought my car before they had prepared it, so went with their inspection and the list came back with many things to correct, several thousands which they had done prior to me picking the car up, very happy with their sale process, there is always someone that will have a different experience.

So far so good, I get my work done at PCM so got the PPI done there, just waiting for the eventual list of things to fix comes back before we hammer out a price.  As you said, car seems like a great original condition example. Looking forward to taking it home!

PPI came back with a few items, pretty standard for a highly original car of this age so no major surprises mechanically.  About $10k work to sort out completely which I can do over time.

Main issue of concern is structural, seems left hand door and rear guard have been repainted at some point and colour is the wrong shade so will need to be fixed.  Also shows a small crack right hand B pillar and left hand leading edge of rear guard with a possible repair at the top of the left hand B pillar showing.

Now is this the kind of thing that would make you walk away?

Sometimes it’s not until you take possession that you can pull everything apart to really inspect. I would ask the question to lift carpet etc. but I dare say walk away. Such a crack the current owner knows about.

Hard to ask / pay premium price with those unknowns ... I think it'd need further investigations by a more specialised party to determine "what, where, how, etc"  so a more informed decision can be made ...

At least if you go into it with eyes wide open there are no surprises to take away the purchase euphoria ...

Same here, I miss it already!  Not looking forward to putting this one through the same process to get it up to speed!

Also the tan interior and red on a targa, superb combo.

My comment was more to do with the fact that I wasn’t ready to buy it before August 😪

I'm going to have a panel beater inspect the car, previous owner has had the car for 19 years and damage was done pre his ownership and it seems to have help up fine.  So potentially just minor crash damage that can be easily rectified.  The body is apparently straight and true which is a good sign.

You would really struggle to import one for that price.  Good buying.

Any thoughts on this rather tasty looking UK-import for sale on Collecting Cars?

https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/1988-porsche-911-carrera-3-2-sport

Does present well but:

  1. Stupid low
  2. No AC
  3. No heat
  4. Why would they replace both front wishbones?
  5. Why no photos of underside of floorpan and tank area?
  6. Clamp on intake elbow would likely prevent WOT.
  7. Why not clean up the engine too?  Looks like its been stored in salt water
  8. Recent paint?

Would need to check if 4, 5, 7 and 8 are related by a common cause. Ultimately opinion would be dependent on actual sale price.

I love the look of this car. The clean fresh silver and that stance. But, It would be so hard to commit to buying sight unseen - especially with the list of items that have been replaced. Just opens the door to so many questions as @Peter M points out.

But it looks SO good.

Maybe it's the Stupid low that attracts me. I've been attracted to stupid before.

Hi all.

Noob alert! I'm so in love with this car: 1988 911 Carrera, it's the same one from the link posted above https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/1988-porsche-911-carrera-3-2-sport

The second link has 231 photos which shows a lot of information. The under body restoration isn't a deal breaker for me, but I'd want some extra photos and a vehicle check just to find out if there's more rust (than surface as mentioned in the carsales ad) or if the car was in an accident at any stage.

The (what I'm assuming is) corrosion (?) on the fan intrigues me, I would have thought that would have been cleaned up. I really have no idea what the up keep on these cars are. Just wondering if you would be so kind as to enlighten me a bit in what I should e looking out for.

Stupid low I can live with, same with no AC.

Are you saying there's no heater in the car? There must be some sort of heating right?

Sorry, probably stupid questions, but I've never looked into 911's before.

Is there any guide anywhere of what the values of these are? $200K seems pretty high, but that's just MHO.

Thanks.

That's OK, we all start the same way!

The second link has 231 photos which shows a lot of information. The under body restoration isn't a deal breaker for me, but I'd want some extra photos and a vehicle check just to find out if there's more rust (than surface as mentioned in the carsales ad) or if the car was in an accident at any stage.

I found it odd that he posted some many photos but none showing the underside of the body.  The fact he has done so much tidy up of the suspension makes me think it may have been all a bit unsightly.  You are correct in saying a good look at the underside would explain the car's history and expose if there is anything to be concerned about.

The (what I'm assuming is) corrosion (?) on the fan intrigues me, I would have thought that would have been cleaned up. I really have no idea what the up keep on these cars are. Just wondering if you would be so kind as to enlighten me a bit in what I should e looking out for.

I also found it odd that after spending so much effort on restoration he peters out before tidying up the fan!  Since they are made of a magnesium alloy, they discolour and corrode readily.  Usually not a big deal, just check for cracks on the blades if there is evidence the fan has been rubbing the housing.

The best thing you can do is read up on 3.2 buyers guides and befriend an air cooled owner and take them along for a look.  They can usually be readily engaged and paid in alcohol.  Just ask for help and I'm sure someone will be happy to oblige.  Next best is to get a PPI from a reputable shop.

Also be realistic in that these cars are 30 years old now and you will never find a perfect one.  It's a matter of being clear with the compromises you can live with and happy to spend money on rectify.

Stupid low I can live with, same with no AC.

Not when it's so low that it possibly scrapes and damages the fuel tank.  Unless you live in the Artic circle, I think AC is essential if you actually want to drive these in Oz. (No AC is very common in UK delivered vehicles)

Are you saying there's no heater in the car? There must be some sort of heating right?

My memory is the numb nuts owner has replaced the exhaust headers with ones that don't have heat exchangers.  Maybe OK in Qld but then the lack of AC would be a bigger problem.

Sorry, probably stupid questions, but I've never looked into 911's before.

I was in the same boat and asked much dumber questions than you.  I still can't figure out the HVAC control symbols so you are not alone.

Is there any guide anywhere of what the values of these are? $200K seems pretty high, but that's just MHO.

I think everyone agrees they are crazy prices like just about all classic cars post COVID and cheap finance.  However some cars appear to be actually selling at these inflated prices.  I suggest you inspect it and identify the pros and cons of this particular car.  Some of the potential concerns I've raised may be unfounded or not an issue for you.  Do some research on recent sales and then you will be in a position to make an informed offer.

I hope he gets it, but only for selfish reasons of being a fellow '88 owner!

Thanks.
