First P Car - Please recommend a daily driver

Boys, boys,,, I can see that you are a passionate lot and your passion is rubbing on me. Hence the feeling that " I must get one asap'.

Well not quite. I am in no hurry and want to make the right choice. Do you remember the very first time you've had your test drive in the P-car? Didn't you want to get one right away?  Having my recent test drive in 996 once again reignited the fire I've always had. Now, regardless of whether I daily it or not, I do need 4 seats and I am not interested in an SUV. I want a coupe, that's within my budget (extensible) and gives me a woody every time I get in it. So far 997.2 water cooled with PDK (or manual if one comes along)is on the list. 997 turbo or 996 turbo will be on it too. I do need to test drive a few to get a better feel for what I really want. I am not as picky about colors, as long as it's not red or yellow.

Is there a good place in Melbourne where I can test drive a few and get a better feel for it? Brighton Porsche is just around the corner, would that be a recommended place?

Ah incidentally. My cars are my passion. So I don't need to ask my wife's permission to buy myself a car using money that I earn(ed). Obviously we do talk and she is aware that I am looking, but she is only too happy for me to get something that makes me happy. Simple right? (and yes, I do prioritize bills, mortgage and kids education above my car needs)

By the way, how reliable is 5-speed auto in pre-PDK 996 turbo models?

and who is @Symsy and how do i get in touch?

sleazius - which P-car are you looking for next? Are you planning on selling your 997.1?

Ideal DD = Cayman...end of debate :)

Fun on weekend blasts too!

In fact how many guys on this forum DD their own P-cars?

Not on the forum but I know of 6: 3 Caymans, 2 Cayennes and 1 Macan.

I also see a mid-year 911, and 2 964s in the Drummoyne/Balmain area a few times a week.

was given a short test drive in 996 Turbo. Since then I've had sleepless nights thinking of how exciting that drive was:)

really? I always thought they were a bit <cough> dull <cough>. Sure blisteringly fast but too clinical, especially compared to say, a  996 GT3.

That, my friend, is a question MANY of us have asked ourselves OVER AND OVER again.   I'm not sure Symsy even knows who he is..........except to say he is the coolest dude in Byron Bay with the coolest collection of cars this side of Mullumbimby.  And they are almost always white.

Just send a private message to Symsy and when he has finished pleasuring his harem, I'm sure he will get back to you.

Now now, I bought a silver car and ones in primer, so thats technically grey is it not

White is the colour of purity, had to balance out that Black passion you got .

White is also the favorite colour of the spiritual enlightened or young kids who are aiming for spiritial enlightenment through UDL Cans in Byron.

I would slip to violet and if I could get my hands on one of those new  GT3 RS's

I know where two nice 993's are C4S and  993S , if you like curves  neither white though

C2 too valuable to drive anymore mate?

Does help to have a few of them though.....for when something goes wrong

Nah, just been there done that, always wanted to stick up two fingers to the morning peak.  It's hermetically sealed and cctv protected now...

Only real men can dd a/c (or older) Porkers, spreadsheets or future value contemplations not required.  Fortune favours the fearless and brave.

But as a knight of the realm this is old news to you.

Smit2100 - Thanks heaps for a such a detailed response. It is your response that made me reconsider NA997 towards something much more exciting. I've just imagined sitting at the traffic lights on Nepean hwy being unable to even get into the usable boost. And you are right .. there are so many cameras, patrols cars that loosing your licence would be inevitable.

How much shall I expect to pay for 996 Turbo with a low kms? (ie under 80k kms for example) How about 997 Turbo?

If I was to use my P-car for weekend fun, then I would love to do some "small" mods to improve performance/fun factor.
So the pragmatic approach would be to keep my M135i as a daily and use the 996/7 Turbo as a fun weekender?

If you are in Melbourne, I would love to do a key swap and have a go in your 996 Turbo. The one I've driven was stock auto and
I "barely" opened her up. I usually don't thursh other people's automobiles.

Who is Symsy? What does 5k advocate fee gets you? Does he import or finds something good locally?

So gents, in terms of kms traveled, what is the sweet spot for 996/997 Turbo cars?
Without being too imposing, could I also ask what you guys are actually paying for them? ( apparently there is a significant difference between advertised
prices and what people are actually getting for them 2nd hand)

So gents, please bear with me, as I have only embarked on this journey and need time to get my bearings.  Any advice and suggestions would be much appreciated

Pm'd you regarding key swapping

Not withstanding I have a 996 tt, and absorbing all the responses with a biased boost junky hat on,   assuming your P car purchase is a long time keeper and its a drivers car and assuming unlike some, you are impartial to a UK import (ongoing debate) and a manual, if leaning towards a 997, I  think you are crazy to look at a NA 997 when I reckon the car below is  worth a call / shout out for info (someone on here may of looked at it) / doing a $700 ish PPI including compression test at Don Monroe's in qld.  If checks ok  and can be picked up at circa 120k, represents great bank for buck.   Spend 5k at Sonnen Porsche on replacement parts (cheaper replacement genuine P boxed parts from the US are also inferior just like a UK import is when you are behind the wheel according to some) to freshen it up and fix the necessary rubber shit bits up, brakes etc  along with a with a major type service at an Indy Porsche specialist and touch up the scratches and stone chips,  another 2.5K on a cobb accessport / tune and sweet ride for weekend OTWL duties at the high end of your budget

In terms of shyness when dealing with private sellers, just on 12 months ago, I  made a first enquiry on my 996tt (61k / manual/ silver / black) at an advertised price just shy of that 997 tt above and landed it 7 weeks later for a 9xk  number and didn't take offence / was put off by the response to my initial offer.  A week or so prior, I also had a 996tt UK import for the taking at sub 85k (advertised at 98k) until I put in a final buy today offer of 70k after the compression results from the PPI that were not to my liking (15k discount to open the motor up).

PS I think keeping your BMW 135i as a daily (assume you will buy out the lease for circa 40% of the purchase price and could sell it from company to yourself for 20% / perhaps roll it over again to the business at a much lower number) is smart.

No mate, moving to weekend duties. Can't see me selling it at this stage but you never know, the number one reason for selling fun cars is a lack of space, thats not an affliction I suffer from.

edit: Didn't answer your first question, whatever comes up first. The list is long but the selection is not. I'm torn between daily (4 seats) and GT at the moment. A couple of interest rate rises might shake something loose.

the car I am planning on buying is definitely a long-time keeper, Hence making the right choice is important.

Over the next few weeks I will aim on test-driving few NA and turbo examples and make my mind up based on the actual experience. Purely aesthetically I like the 997( I guess I am no less shallow than everyone else out there) but time will tell. Definitely need 4 seats, so no GT variant for me. Will stay away from the imports for time being too.

M135 is staying, at the very least, until I find the right P-car.

Now looking forward to meeting some of you guys in Elwood, on the 14th of Feb

Cheers

If in the city, choose the most tunnels, on ramps as the cops generally dont have a place to hide. Also the ports and commercial areas always good for a blast.

Come on urban outlaws…  Failing that whats wrong with 3am????

I can confirm that this is sometimes true, and other times not...

A few years ago I spent 18 months looking for a long-time keeper........................which I just sold.    :o

The world is a fickle place, and I thought that I would never sell my original, logged and undamaged 1972 tangerine with houndstooth interior longhood.

Times change, the world changes, families change, babies come and go, priorities change and then suddenly I sold the car which I had promised to leave to my kids.........now I better go tell the kids

Buy what you like. Drive it. Wash it.  Enjoy it.  Sell it and buy another.
