Metal Posted 22January, 2017 Report Share Posted 22January, 2017 Hi there. I'm looking to put my stock steering wheel in the cupboard for a while. Can I get some input on why various size variations; personal preferences; advantages/disadvantages; best quality; recommendations etc? What aftermarket steering wheel do you use? Do you find certain sizes impede the view of the gauges? Some examples of options I've seen that I like (keeping with all black in my cockpit) are below.Anyone want to sell me one?Cheers in advance. LeeM Posted 22January, 2017 Report Share Posted 22January, 2017 As nice as the Prototipo/Momo wheels are, there are similar SAAS wheels on the market for a quarter of the price that do the same job. They have the same PCD too (70mm), so they fit straight onto a Momo boss like Sparco or OMP do. I bought a suede SAAS wheel for $80 or $90 ex display stock $ retail was $129 I think). It's thicker than the Momo's I've had/have, and I much prefer it to any wheel I've tried the same size. I also much prefer suede to leather for grip and comfort. Probably not at the level of quality as a Momo, though they're not that far off (I'm not as fussy as some though) It's a very personal choice, so the only way is to visit a shop that stocks Momo/Sparco/OMP and try them, then try some SAAS wheels from Autobarn/Supercheap etc. If you see cheap Momo's on Ebay etc, they're probably Chinese knock off's, and will bend very easily
Philbee Posted 23January, 2017 Report Share Posted 23January, 2017 For me, part of the choice was... having an old car, no power steering anything smaller than 350mm may get a bit hard to turn quickly or tightly or just parking. Also, I found the prototipo a bit narrow to keep a good grip on when I hit the SMT turns, had to get it covered with another layer. But if you have a 996 by the looks, then its not a prob for you... But going to a non-airbag from a 996 with an airbag is kinda frowned upon (not by me, just the law I think).... is it a track car or DD? Whoa! I just hit the link above, $750 for the momo!! I'd rethink that one.... way too much! Try demon-tweeks in UK for a momo proto. Otherwise, hear what @leeM says above... cheap and simples! Stew F Posted 23January, 2017 Report Share Posted 23January, 2017 that first RUF wheel is pretty cool. I recently bought a SAAS GT 34cm wheel, circa 1980. Kind of similar to a prototipo, and bucket loads of patina. Paid 20 bills for it. It's a flat wheel, so as well as the hub, I bought a 50mm spacer, otherwise it's only 5mm off the dash. I like the momo prototipo style, but not the white stitching. Plus it's the stereotypical Porsche wheel, and that's not me. No offense to people who have them.
