I think they choose this because it is a cheap part which usually involves lots of labour.

i have been told several times to replace a Tx valve, yet I never have.  AC problem? Always seems to be leaks in my experience, and then maybe compressor issues, caused by leaks.

Wouldn't happen to be a BMW, would it?  Seems to be part of their business plan...

We used to get this from BMW all the time, I'd even 'pre-decline' when I dropped the car off, all to no avail.  Always bought replacements on-line (ex-UK) for 1/3 of the cost delivered, genuine OEM.  Grubbers.

If you want your A/C fixed/ serviced go to an A/C specialist not the dealer :)

sure but the dealers love to drop advice on AC and as stated, they emailed a special offer out undercutting the locals on AC servicing to get people to bring the cars in.  Pretty good idea I must admit, when it comes to generating a sale pipeline from an email list.    Certainly better than the 5,354,543 letters I get in my mailbox everyday for real estate agents trying to convince me to sell my house.   'People are buying in your street!  Contact me now! I sold a property for 300% of asking in -3 days!'

The Australian dealers appear to be amateurs compared to Asia. I wanted to buy some 6.2 GT3 wheels & sports suspension for my car in Singapore & was quoted $52,000 !! I explained to the dealer I've previously bought the same items in Australia, know the value & the quote must be incorrect. After escalation to the boss I was told the price was absolutely correct & if I couldn't afford it perhaps I should consider my car ownership options....ha ha....I immediately went home & bought the wheels for $1800 from the US & the suspension direct from KW for $3400 !!

I'm all for people making a margin but GIVE ME A BREAK....I have both Porsches & BMW's & will only use independents. I use Cairns for road Porsche's, WerksRRR for race Porsche's & Northern BMW for any BMW work....and they are all fantastic !!

How's that work Reggie?

It's just a plain key with no transponder or anything fancy surely?

I currently have only one key which is the flip one attached to the transponder.

Are I right but don't I need to go to a dealership with proof of ownership to get one that matches and code for my VIN?

Great Ghetto fix!  Well done!  Who was the inventor of zip ties?  Hopefully he's a millionaire...

Cable ties were first invented by Thomas & Betts, an electrical company, in 1958 under the brand name Ty-Rap. Initially they were designed for airplane wire harnesses. The original design used a metal tooth, and these can still be obtained.

just sayin.........

(damn- kept reading & found about 400 of you beat me too it.....sorry).

If you didn't need another transponder, I would have recommended Keys4Classic.  I agree the transponder puts you over a barrel.....

did you lose the key? If so, you might need to replace all the locks and barrels too including the glovebox. Just did this for the Cayman and it was a ten day $2500 exercise. Proof of ownership and signing your life away are also required.

I was told that if you wanted to change the battery on the key transponder you would need to recode it. This is for a 996... the fact is you dont need to do anything, just change the battery.

I need a new key for my 993 and have to go to the stealership for this. There is no avoiding this one......

I bought a second key and head for my 993.   The head has nothing in it - just a light.

I have a second alarm fob which I purchased from eBay and used the magic click here 17 times, run around in circles twice shouting "Work you F&$(@r" and the new alarm fob was encoded with the old one.  Total cost was around $45 for the whole lot.

More BMW rip offs .  Wife's X5 was serviced at BMW Mornington last week.  She copped the wiper blades scam.  When they called her, she said do it, $160 later we have a lovely pair of $40 wiper blades.  Makes my blood boil, charge me $70 and I might cop it.  But $160 is just treating us like fools.

My Q7 is due for service in 1,000km........dealer is convenient so I'll give them a go with a pre warning not to stitch me up. Let's see how that goes.

Q7 heading to service tomorrow watch this space.....

We have a current Mini JCW with 5 years free servicing, let's see if they change the wiper blades on that during the 1st service...

Update; wipers are not covered in the free service program, bwaaahaha...

Care to divulge parts cost and labour cost? I wonder if its ridiculous as buying them at Porsche and having them "fitted"

I declined there fatuous offer and didn't inquire on pricing, as I would have gone postal, so no idea, soz.

Although a few years ago on an F11 BMW it was around $160 + fitting, so I bought Bosch replacements on eBay ex-UK for about $35 delivered to my PO Box.  Fitting was click, click, in that amount of time.

C U next Tuesday's

well, any blatant rip offs to report...?

fixed price service.  Fantastic, no surprises.......except that the fixed price was $945 for a service involving an oil change and lots of "checks"

  • 3 months later...

On my wife's BMW X3, the LED tail light failed. You have to replace the whole bloody assembly for a cool $660. Had no choice so had them replace it. Few weeks later the other side failed. Pulled it apart and found a badly soldiered connection which I re-soldiered. Cost me half an hour and ZERO $$s
