Pokiou Posted 4February, 2017 Report Share Posted 4February, 2017 So it started for me about 28 years ago. I was a kid sitting at home waiting for our family friends to come over. Out of nowhere a brown car pulled into the drive way. It was weird, it looked funny, it was wide and it had round headlights and a whale tail. Out stepped my friend with his dad and his mum and they started to walk towards the house. I kept running from left to right on behind the window like a excited dog.. but i was trying to look around them to see the car again.I couldn't contain my self any longer, I had to find out what it was. I ran outside right past my friend and his family to the car... i must of walked around it like 100 times. Trying to pronounce the name of the car, looking at the head lights and the width of the car and how large the tail was.. Out came my friends dad and himself. Told me about the car. Denis this a German made car. It's a Porsche 911 SC. He then said the magic words..."do you want to go for a drive?". Of course i did. I just jumped into the front seat and off we set off. Out of drive way, i could hear the engine rumbling away. Everyone was looking at us as we roared down towards the beach. We started at Mordialloc and ended up at St.Kilda. Everyone was looking at the car and pointing. I couldnt believe a car could get so much attention. We pulled up at the beach and parked the car, got out and got an ice cream from one of those ice cream vans. Took a seat and watched the car. To me that was one of the most significant car experiences of my life. From that day on-wards all i drew was Porsche's in my school books. All i ever talked about for years to follow was that night i went for a drive. I knew i wanted to own a Porsche. Fast Forward to Christmas 2016... Years leading up, i always wanted a Porsche but could never afford one. My wife was sick of my talking about them constantly, i begged for years and years but financially we couldn't do it. Finally after years of begging i wore her down.. but it was to late for the a nice air-cooled one . I started looking for one i could afford, finally had the money and the search was one. I kept looking for months and months, i started to see a pattern. The Porsche 996 were alot cheaper then the rest.Months of reading and trying to figure out why i found the reasons.1. First watercooled 9112. People not liking the headlights3. Lines not as aggressive and previous models.4. IMS bearing issues...5. other niggly things. So is being water-cooled bad? nope... was the headlights an issue for me? Nope nope nope nope.. until i got the IMS issues. Seems there is two sorts. Dual bearing and Single bearing. from 98 to 99 and i think some 00 models had the dual bearing and the rest the single bearing. I did the maths and decided that i would go for a 996. The risk was worth it. I was on carsales, gumtree and ebay everyday. Even sent the word our to my friends that work at Autohaus. One popped up a nice black on black 996 Manual 3.4ltr with service history but in NSW. Found it on a Friday and on a Saturday it was gone! I found another one, Ocean Blue and cream interior... 3.4ltr manual 1998 model. It ticked all the boxes for me. Clean inside and came with the Porsche options BBS wheels. Service history and the owner was a good guy. PPI showed what needs doing and i like tinkering. So i bought it! FINALLY I OWN PORSCHE!!!!! I'm in love.. I love it. The way it drive and sounds. Back seats are out to fit my 2.5yo daughter in with her seat. It's booked in for a exhaust bypass and I'm looking for those caps to do the intake mod.I cant wait to drive this car everyday!!!! Look forward to some car meets and meeting some of the guys and gals here. Cheers,

TrevMcRev Posted 4February, 2017 Report Share Posted 4February, 2017 Congrats mate. Love the story. I think many here have a similar tale...A 996 was my first too and what a great car. Loved every drive.Don't let yourself feel you got a lesser car because it's not air cooled. The rose-coloured romance of the air cooled adulterers will always come up with a emotional reason why the model one generation older than whatever you have is "better"....Last I checked, the progress of Porsche cars has continued forward with each generation... they have some pretty good engineers there, i think they know what they're doing. Yet every time the engineers make a significant technological advancement to purists cry foul. Yep. They have totally screwed up with the 991 GT3RS...It should really still be air cooled right? They had it just right in 1965.
