Euro Day - Lakeside Park, QLD - 23rd April 2017

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

As some of you may be aware I work for QLD Raceways here in QLD. We have an event coming up at Lakeside that may interest some of you, Euro Day at Lakeside Park.

Basically these days are laid back cruising style events on the race circuit, with infield parking being treat a little bit like a show and shine. Speeds on track are kept sensible and passengers are allowed.

If anyone has questions post them in here and I will endeavour to answer them. Would be really good to see you all and put some faces to names/forum names.

  • 1 month later...

I spoke to the fellow prior to his incident ( Craig?) his car is a 1968 modified as an RSR replica running a warmed over 3.2.

Very nicely done and immaculate.I mentioned his tyre tread wear rating of 350 indicated a fairly hard compound plus they were 6/7 yrs old both of which which could cause a lack of grip. I don,t know what happened but he kissed the armco coming onto the straight.Hope it wasn,t a tyre issue...some damage to the front valance but driveable.

Good event, but a bit scarey with 50 drivers and cars in a "cruise " session, all with varying skill levels.

Not my own words or photos, but apparently came out of the pits, put the power down, fish tailed and into the barrier.
Still got better off than that P Plater in the E36...
I heard that a lot of them in the cruise session had decent pace... Everyone thinks its a track day, but with so many cars out there, its just chaos, reason I dont do these happy laps anymore.

well I don't normally post photos of track incidents but at least no rego shown.

when he did the first session he was wheel spinning out of the pits when nobody else seemed to.

but if you look he didn't do the second session.  So I think the driver was not expecting a lack of grip.

i think the biggest issue with it all is just the variance in the expectations.   They need to stress more that it's not a track day so come back for one of those.   Black flagging one or two cars for a session for doing something stupid would set the tone.

Maybe we should try and organise a pfa session - I think it is possible to arrange.

re: BMW guy "Kid went in where the bridge used to be (can we still just say 'under the bridge'?) and by all accounts was driving like a bit of a tool and there may even be some video that eventually surfaces. I ended up talking to him as he was released from the medical centre. Was apparently doing 120km/h when he hit. Said that a bunch of cars overtook him and he thought "These guys are going hard, I will too!". Had an odd look on his face when I said that the cars that passed him are probably still faster at an easy 7/10ths than he is flat out. I'm not sure he understood. "

golf drivers seem to be worst offenders for not understanding these events:
"Did half an hour at QR on Sunday in the RS with the VW club which was fun. It was just an untimed happy laps thing but they were fairly loose with their definition of 'road speed' this time out. Car did well - was quick, fun, almost zero understeer. Only negatives were a bit of brake fade & more body roll than I was anticipating, but that's weight for you. Despite being bone stock & having a baby seat in the back it didn't seem to have much of an issue driving around Golf Rs, even if their drivers came wearing Alpine Stars race boots & had laptops plugged into them before the session making sure they were running the right tune & data logging for this most serious of endurance racing events. Got home, stuck the baby in it & went out with the family, good all rounder. "

two reasons i won't be doing cruise sessions any more (unless PFA organised for example). so many idiots and high track density.
sad to hear about the red 911 but  to go out there on such old tyres with other people around..?

The VW drivers seemed to be the worst.  No doubt a new golf R or similar is fast.  Or even warmed over early cars.  What I found was that those guys wanted to 'show' how much faster their VW was over a Porsche.  No shit Sherlock I've got my kid in the front seat and cold tyres and zero trust in the other drivers.

i have gopro footage of the blue scirocco going 'under the bridge' with a guy hanging out the window taking photos of the following blue golf.  And I mean hanging out the window with his upper body.  That clearly is not within the 'seatbelts' at all times rules, nor the spirit.

Perhaps OP can take this feedback back to QR.  I do like the format of the event but it started to lose the friendly atmosphere and started to degenerate into a pissing contest. 'Hurr Hurr did you see that old guy in the MG, how slow'.  All they need to do is flag a couple of people for idiocy and it will all fall back into line.

oh, the waft of cooked brakes at the end of the straight was pretty pungent...

This is the 'happy laps' session that they advertise which is a private cruise session.  We could look into something like this for a pfa event.  Obviously not for the track hounds but could be fun for those who have yet to venture onto a track

I've looked at similar for Morgan Park, would need to make a weekend out of it though (or maybe a stop on a big drive south)

I am surprised just how many photos of your car turn up on social media with these types of events!

Does anyone know the guy who had the blue widebodied 911 there?  He parked next to me but scarpered before I got to talk to him.

Short co-pilot is short

he's a PFA user and there's a thread about his car on here somewhere.  (I know his name is Tim) I can't remember his username though

some footage here (at 2 mins) of how the red 911 ended up in the wall
