What would you do? Donor engine advice

Good afternoon gents!

As you can see from the photo, my Porsche is a little light in the back. Im chasing a bit of advice, I've just purchased a 1974 911s Targa missing its 2.7 engine and short of being the worlds most expensive paper weight I would like to put a new one in it.

The question is - find an original 2.7 and rebuild it (fast road trim). Try and track down a 3.0 but they seem to be few and far between.

What would you do??? Pros of each option?

Ps I'm in Perth so if you have advice on workshops that would be great too.

OK so chances are you will never track down the original motor to achieve the matching numbers so many seem to crave. Congratulations, you can now look for the latest model air cooled you can source (afford)  and be confident that by buying a later model motor it has benefited from all the development invested by Porsche in the intervening years. The 2.7 and 3.0 motors unless they have benefited from a full rebuild are really getting on in years so why consider them, they have their problems which have been discussed in many forums. At worst I would suggest a 3.2 but even they are now getting on in years but have proven to be very reliable in many applications.

hahaha yes!! As you have said I may be able to track down the engine. It was taken out for a rebuild 10 years ago and the workshop it went to closed down. So I may be able to find it but I don't really mind if I can get a more powerful/reliable donk that will leed me to enjoying the car more!

I guess if there's a chance you can track down the original engine, you should.

But for the expense you're likely to have either way, I'd be getting a donk that makes you smile the widest when you drive the car.

A car that goes the way you like, to me, is way more satisfying than one where the numbers all match. If you have both, great.

have you driven a 2.7 vs a 3.0? they are different engines to drive - the 2.7 feels more torque-y in the rev range

I'd build a good/reliable 2.7 and drive that (personally) have a look at Bruce Anderson's '911 performance handbook' for some different engine configurations

I know of a 935 spec engine, though I dare say you'd wanna have well over 60 grand ready for that! ;)

Awesome if you can source the original engine, though if not, and depending on your budget, I'd probably go the 2.7 route for year and model originality (ensure the head studs have been sorted out).....or build a torque monster 3.8! ;)

If coin isn't a problem then there is the 76' Carrera 3.0 engine that's for sale on Pelican Parts. I think he was down to 17k.. probably USD too lol. Which makes it bloody expensive! Engine is in France.

Matching numbers only matters once, when you sell.  A good engine with some later model reliability and power is enjoyed every time you turn the key.  It might even help come sale time if the rest of the car isn't exactly factory fresh.
