The rip off is mainly the:-

1 Luxury car tax (33% on price of over 57000 (approx)

2 GST

3. Stamp duty

For instance, on a 450K car in Victoria, thats 22K stamp duty, 31K GST and wait for it .... 83K LCT.

Sure, if you can pay the freight you can carry the tax load but it does show you that fully nearly 35% of the car in that example goes to The Revenue.

A more "real world" example.  On a car thats 100K on the road, you're still paying around 16K in tax and duties.

I'm not crying a river for the dealers either here but everyone's entitled to make a profit.

this is the bans against parallel imports and new LHD cars.  Govt gives manufacturers a legal monopoly on distribution, so the manufacturers take full advanatage.   Yes, taxes are a big chunk but even if you add all the taxes to the U.S. Base price still nowhere near the full amount.

australia has a lot of manufacturer owned dealers...they know it's a good wicket.

The solution is to lift the ban on parallel imports and allow new LHD cars to be registered.   The difference would disappear quickly.  There is no longer a local industry to protect, and the government would actually get more tax revenue from higher sales.

there was legislation drafted to do this but it seems to have died from industry pressure.

If they did allow the parrallel imports in you could bet that the government would just tax them just as highly also .any excuse is used to take more from the working public.......The cost of living in Australia is just out of control  ,,I really do get frustrated when I read  Skidmarks post I quote For instance, on a 450K car in Victoria, thats 22K stamp duty, 31K GST and wait for it .... 83K LCT..........That is a large sum of tax to be giving to the criminals down in Canberra,,I know that we just have to accept it because that is just the way it is but you have to wonder about the amount Tax the government is raking in and the dick heads still can,t balance there books ,let alone do something positive for the nations tax payers ;)
