Tasmanian Experience

Recommended Posts

I was all booked in for the PFA Tassie Tour which recently passed but a business trip to Detroit was scheduled and I had to pull out. The Spirit of Tas tickets were already booked so I amended the dates and headed over last Tuesday with my wife as the navigator. We packed the car up and boarded the Spirit with a plan to follow the great routes organised by Tit. We expected the trip to be great but nothing could have prepared us for the amazing time that we had. I've done a fair amount of overseas travelling but can safely say that Tasmania has some of the most beautiful and picturesque scenery that I have ever seen. Pair that with very well maintained roads full of twisties, climbs and descents and an aircooled 911, I was in heaven.

Had one run in with the local police, was pulled me over for doing 124 in a 100 zone. Nice guy and let me off with a warning (that would never happen here).

Car was brilliant and mostly rainy conditions allowed the C4 to really prove itself. Belting along the winding roads, low gear, high revs, rain coming down, the C4 was nothing but composed.

Some of towns visited to give you an idea were Strahan, Queenstown, Bicheno, Coles Bay, Port Arthur, Richmond and a few days in Hobart. Hobart really caught me by surprise. Stayed in Battery Point which was great and ate some fantastic meals at Templo (highly recommend), Etties, Franklins and spent a day at MONA.

Wife loved it almost as much as I did, will definitely be returning, hopefully on an annual basis.

Big thanks to @Tit and Renntours. Hopefully you organise another PFA next year and I'll be able to make it.

I've posted a few of these shots (or similar) on social media but a story is boring without the pics. They're only iPhone shots, I'm not much of a photographer.

Nothing wrong with those photos :)

I am still wanting to take my car down, but don't want to drive all the way from Brisbane.. considering trucking it to Melb but still worried about transport people punishing it for being too low...

Thanks Philbee. Yeah she got in a few, the car was generally in the background of those though. She can be seen in the passenger seat waiting to board the ferry! Does that count?

How scenic is Coles Bay.  ANF & I had lunch down there on the day the rest of the crew headed to Port Arthur.

Absolutely stunning! We called in to the Freycinet Marine Farm for a dozen oysters and some wine before watching the sunset at Muirs Beach.

Thank the South islanders for building such epic roads!

Indeed!! Having just driven through the Canadian Rockies, where one would expect a few curves (sadly not!), it is very pleasing just to drive around where I live :D

Good to see you got it properly dirty @poli84 :)

You weren't happen to be driving near Salamanca around 4-5 on Friday evening were you? I saw a 928 same colour as yours, the only other classic P-car i saw for the trip. I tried to give a wave but the driver (maybe yourself), wasn't seeing me.

Yep, that indeed would have been me! I saw your 964 and as I drove past tried to grab your attention too :)

I was quite over sitting in Hobart traffic.... my trip through town and back took well over an hour.....

How safe is the car on the ship.  I have a trip booked later in the year (September) and a bit worried about the car on the boat if the weather is a bit rough.  Do they secure them in some fashion or are they just parked one behind the other with handbrake on.  What clearance is required getting on and off? Any feedback or advice would be welcomed

Not tied down, they are close to each side by side but there is sufficient room front and back. We got 30 knot winds on the way back and the ship was up and down, PA warnings to minimise movement around the ship, cars were fine. There was a recent incident with 55 knot winds and cars were damaged.

My 964 is relatively low with pretty long front and rear overhangs, generally I scrape on things if I do not take the angle. I had no problems what so ever on and off at both ports. I would suggest that a standard 981 will be fine embarking and disembarking.

just booked my car in for some....after tassie beauty treatment with Ron Goodman. Really nice bloke

Whatcha doing?

I've taken 3 trips with 3 different Porsches, no issues. Ask to be on the upper decks when you go to the line up, if you end up in the hold the ramp is not friendly going downstairs.

@Lucky Phil. I've done 3 trips on the ferry with my 911. Each time, no problems. I have barely 10cm clearance at the front valance. Just make sure you grab what you need for overnight before leaving the car. They lock the doors to the hold once they start to disembark.

I drove from Qld for the PFA tour. On the way down we met up with the Sydney and Canberra contingent in Canberra. From that point it kind of felt like the tour had begun. On the way back we drove straight and that was a long two days.  I think the secret is to extend your time away and tour back via some fun roads, preferably with some fun people. From Canberra/ Sydney it is a relatively comfortable day driving back to Brisbane.

Perhaps next tour we can commence our tour in Brisbane .. a fortnight of Porsche driving would be epic!

Good to see your car's as dirty as all of ours were by the time we got back ?

Great roads, definitely going back next year. Still got some paint left of the front bar that needs to be worn off by @turboT's chewing gum boots ??
