GT3....or ???? instead? GT4 it is.

That is my old car. It has a Remus exhaust, but PM me if you are seriously looking at it.

I did send that WRX guy a message but no response - comments on FB suggest it sold immediately.   Get that on road reg and I'd be happy.

that yellow Zetec escort looks nice but i really struggle to see 70-100k for these.  And probably look like a bit of a dick running around in that on weekends,

I like this look on a Cayman, this particular one seems to have been around a while now.  It's only got a set of wheels and lowered but looks so much better than stock.  Maybe it has an exhaust too.  If so all that's left is to add some decent seats and steering wheel and go GT3 lite.  Would be plenty of accessible fun for $50-60k?

As damn nice as that Cayman is (without the prior celebrity ownership tag) it's 10k too much. Though you would be popular with Porsche owners at cars n coffee when you say 'Home built by Jeff owned this' ?

For a fun car that's relatively cheap, a Cayman S would be worth considering

thanks Jeff.  PM sent.  It was meant to be with PFA sticker pre fitted!

cheapest on market is UK import, stock, more kms, $48k.  Next cheapest is $56k and up from there.  I assume $55k for Jeffs car, if it checks out, with a few mods and Remus exhaust would be a good buy? But I don't know this market as its only recently come back on my radar.  Where's @Niko.....

Is this Cayman by Jeff , before he learnt welding … he told me he had a gaffer tape fetish,  I have been trying to understand , I suggest check under the arches ..atleast and as for lowering.. hacksaws work wonders he said , just have to get the vice grips on the springs and hold em beteeen your legs..

exige maybe but would need a Honda engine not the torque void Toyota or even worse rover engine

Really interesting thread.

If you're looking for something that will take it to a GT3 I can't see you happy with a Cayman unless you do engine swaps for a larger Porsche engine.

Lotus is an option either V6 Exige or 2zz-ge Elise/Exige. SSC/Harrop do lots of upgrades for both. A 2zz-ge Elise more than took it to the Fitzgerald 997 Turbo in the Harrop Ultimate street challenge a few years ago. You don't have to do the Honda conversion anymore for a quick car.

There are a lot of cars you can get and mod quite easily nowadays with a $50-100k budget. You just need to work out what type and brand of car you're happy with. For me it always comes down to the Porsche/Lotus decision.

That said, I do see a lot of guys buying Mustang nowadays because of the plethora of performance parts you can get for them for reasonable cost, whilst I struggle with ownership of one they appear to be quite happy with cars in general.

^^ that M3 looks and sounds great.  I'm really chasing a weekend toy for the road only.  My S1 RX7 track car is faster than both those time attack Harrop machines - I've been to PI twice in that car and I've done 1:45.7.  Since then I've fitted a new Turbo with more punch off the corners and a new engine has been built and going back in the car now (bigger and tidied up ports might serve up a few more ponies too).  Can't wait to get back out there - must look up the entry rules for Time Attack...?  The little Mazda could be a giant killer.

Back to the weekender, the challenge is finding the sweet spot, light, fast and nimble enough to have fun but not at GT Porsche level which is just too fast = jail bait.  And not expensive and collectible which in my view can ruin the enjoyment.  I've come full circle back to a $50k 987 Cayman with exhaust and a set of wheels and lowered like Jeff's one above.  Kind of feels about the right mix, probably similar to an earlier 4 cylinder Exige but flat 6 acoustics.

I'm similar. although after a hell of a lot of research think the 997.2 Cayman/Boxster is the sweet spot (shouldn't get scored bores like Jeff's old one or IMS worries) and would be very suitable for taking the wife on a weekend getaway/social drives/track days.

Then see fairly new supercharged Elises for around the $60k mark. Cheap to maintain, go well, lots of upgrades plus a lack of depreciation on Lotus compared to the 987's and can't make any decision.

any examples?  Only one I've seen is a recent supercharged V6 but track only stay write off $66k.  Everything else is mid 2000s Toyota 4 cyl at that price

Doug, stay with Porsche or you'll do your dough on depreciation.  Boxster / Cayman 987.2 would be my advice.  My NZ Boxster is a peach, and is currently getting lowered to try and take some of the gay factor out.  The drop top is actually quite fun to have (more so than I thought it would be) and really I didn't notice any chassis slop that'd worry you on the road. Hell I'm tracking it in 2 weeks time.

V6 is 100kish plus,

Theres nothing wrong with Supercharged 4cyl this at I'd suggest lowish to mid 60k has the SSC upgrades giving 220hp at the wheels. Depreciation at those prices is basically over for a few years.

900kg and 220hp at wheels is a good equation compared to Cayman maybe 1350kg and 290hp at flywheel.  That would feel pretty lively.  Bit of a bandsaw experience though

How's an Alfa 4C compare....

3 year old car, gee that's taken a dive value wise.  900kg and 220hp at wheels is a good equation compared to Cayman maybe 1350kg and 290hp at flywheel.  That would feel pretty lively

Yes, but less of a tourer than a Cayman/Boxster and you don't get the engine note of the Porsche.

I've driven both and like both for completely different reasons, even though they are directly comparable when shopping.

The Lotus I'd say will drop bugger all resale wise over a few years period and be very cheap as to own. With 981's already in the 80k range it's not looking good for the 987 series, then you get the Porsche tax on parts and repairs.

Swings and roundabouts on both options.

Alfa 4c costs more than both, has an awesome road presence, I've no idea of the drive.

@DJM  Hows a 996 GT2 fair against a 997 turbo?? interetsed in real world experience ?

@Daz7  I have been in a well driven 4C out on track with Lambos and GT3.. it is suprisingly ok .. underpowered but definately with the right driver able to cause some interesting traffic for the Cayman and GT3 on a technical track.

Lotus Esprit S1 for sale on carsales if you guys cant decide.. probably will go under water too..proper Lotus

haven't driven a Turbo but I imagine it would be considerably dumbed down relative to GT2,  think GT3 with Turbo plus power vs 150kg extra weight, AWD with TC/SC added.  Raw and figetty vs cushy and cruisey. Still bloody fast across country.  I chased Jims 996 TT in the wet, we were travelling same speed he got out looking relaxed whereas I was sweaty and fingertips tingling from exhilaration and near death!  horses for courses.

987 S are around $50k vs 981S start at $115k

Still a big gap.  Lotus buzzsaw supercharger could be fun but I reckon I'm up for some epic long drives which the Porsche is better suited to.  I'm thinking I might pull the trigger on a 987S manual in the 40s and then get the stance right like Jeff's and add exhaust and I should be happy for a while.  With $50k invested, depreciation is really a non issue.  If it drops 25% I'm down $12k.  Who cares if I get a few good years of fun.  You'd drop that driving out of the showroom on something newer.

I don't see 987's dropping a whole lot very quickly. They have been sitting around the same price for a few years now, and some of them are over 10 years old. They may drop back a little bit, but I never see them as a $20k car. They are too good, and don't have the stigma's that the early 986's had.

GT3 you won't understand it just driving on the street, it really needs to be driven on its limit at the track... once you have done that, it makes sense. Most guys who buy them and never track it get frustrated and sell them...

I don't think there is much else out there that will hang with it in all aspects, out of the box, maybe look at Gallardo Superleggera? If you can stomach the maintenance that is!

Decided against Cayman, came close over the weekend but I wasn't excited by the prospect.  A GT3 would make perfect sense as a weekender and track car.  But I have a fast track car that It awesome to drive and fast, I'm keeping it.

so I'll park this thread for a while.  New engine is back in the Mazda so I can get my track fix.  In parallel maybe I'll sell the Q7 which I no longer really need and buy an M3 Competition or Guilia for daily driver fun. But that's a whole different subject.  Thanks for all the suggestions.

Hi Doug, saw your advert on the big screen on Saturday night at village Southland. Came across really well.... :)

thanks Chris, I'm not keen on the limelight but the marketing guys said a snippet of my ugly mug was important.  Glad to hear it comes across OK.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well after boring you all with my musings over GT3 -> RX7 -> escort -> Datsun -> 986 Boxster-> 987 Cayman S -> frustration and back around again............you may notice there is one less GT4 on market as of this afternoon.  Life's too short.

Oh and to those wondering about Porsche Sport Driving, ill let you know, got that thrown into the deal. ??
