Well I am now the proud owner of a 996 😎

I have hummed and harred over a 986 Boxster S or a 996 for weeks; weighing up the need for 4 seats (albeit 2+2) and the iconic shape of a 911, given I have a wife and 2 kids under 12 and this will be our second car, and the price point and performance of a Boxster S.

Common sense prevailed (well that’s what I told my wife 😜) and I have bought this beauty. PPI at Autowerks showed a very well cared for 996 that had big $ spent on it to pass the PPI with flying colours. The owner was super helpful and a pleasure to deal with- as they say, you buy the owner in these deals, especially when buying interstate 👍

It starts the long trip over Christmas and the New Year with CEVA on Tuesday. I look forward to it arriving early in the New Year 😎

Cheers

Craig

I am in a similar quandry myself.  I am finding it hard to decide between models for a myriad of reasons.  Bear with me -

I have a 60k per day commute through Brisbane traffic (so a PDK or tipper is a must).  Reasonably good traffic flow so would love to do it in a nice Porsche (currently do it in my Golf GTI).

Am a bit concerned though re the "junk" kilometers on a beautiful, expensive machine.

In thinking of the junk kilometers I reasoned that a relatively inexpensive Boxster (987 or 986) might be the go.  Who cares re the k's if the car is not a 911 & has reached the bottom of it's depreciation curve.  Buy a good, well cared for example & live the dream.

Even better -do it in a Cayman - more lovely- at least to my eyes.  Bit more money but that's ok.  Of course with all 3 of the aforementioned cars you have to consider the IMS.  (I know, I know, I can't afford to grenade an engine though).

Get into a 987 S2 & you don't need to worry about the IMS but now you're talking about mid to latre 50's plus & then junk k's do start to become an issue perhaps.

The problem with these cars also is the 2 seater issue.  I have a 5year old son, who at 115cm currently would still fit in the rear of a 911 for a while yet.  (I suppose the wife could walk - I'll tell her via text).

I'd love a 911 (of course who wouldn't).  997's sit effectively just outside my ideal budget (though I'd stretch for the right thing).  996's seem expensive to me for what you get compared to the type of Cayman you'd get for the same money.  Are back seats worth it?

I really wish I got more of a horn for a nice easy BRZ or 86 rather than the cursed Pcars.

Are 996’s expensive for what you get? I would say for the price they just can’t be beat,I know they

can have issues but that could be the case with any car.Whichever you choose I’m sure you’ll have a blast after all it’s a Porsche

Don’t want to confuse things even more but ...

The IMS is easy to change in a 996.1 and .2 ... easy to change in a 986 boxter (notice I didn't say cheap) ...

In a 997.1 and 987.1 Boxter and Cayman, the case needs to be split in order to change it (and that is mucho $$$). Now ... failure in these is much much lower than the previous models, but “could” still happen. Some will say it had been sorted, but it hadn’t. Failure rate was really low so was never publicised like the others.

In the 997.2  and 987.2 it had been sorted completely.

Re .. junk k’s - yep, I’m hearing you. I don’t like putting them on my 911 but all that really means is that I don’t drive it ... I’m ok with that but others aren’t. I guess it depends which camp you fall into ...

I'll bat you this idea...

1. It's a lovely car cosmetically - but unfortunately it is black...

2. It already has a ridiculously high 250+kms on the clock as a result of daily commuting.  Who cares if you add more...?

3. Owned by a Porsche Cars exec and serviced by Porsche with everything up to date.

4. Has the IMS solution

5. One imagines there is further room to move from the current $49k to maybe $44k(?)

So you bought the car Interstate without being able to drive it?  I’ve done that before, but don’t fret, you’re going love driving that 996, they’re worth every cent and will give you so much pleasure every time you turn the key.

Look forward to seeing you around in it, congrats!

Congrats. I picked my 98 manual cab last week. No ppi sent it to PCW this week only needed a service. Drove it 550km yesterday through putty road and the hunter. What an amazing driver it is. Revs like crazy handles beautifully you will love it.

based on being a 98 and colour (blue over Savanna) and spec I’m sure you will find this is one of the Porsche Aust melb delivered launch cars. My cab is one of the first delivered to Aust.

Good buying Craig. You’re going to love it. I too have had a very similar spec 996 for 4+ years and still love it. It’s always an occasion taking it out but also very easy to live with around town. Definite bonus for me is how relatively simple they are, if you’re a keen spannerer they’re pretty easy to DIY. What’s not to love.

Thanks mate.

As much as I would have preferred to inspect it personally, the time of year and lack of time made it a bridge too far unfortunately. It is not the first time I have bought  this way either... 😊

I had a thorough PPI undertaken by Simon at Autowerks (with video footage) so had to leave it to the Porsche specialist 👍

Can I ask what the PPI cost?

You know what, normally I'm a bit ho-hum re the looks of a Cab, but this thing is a great bit of kit.  I actually like the hardtop on it whereas they normally leave me very cold.

Jeez, CTS must be struggling for stock, things have changed since I looked at their cars a few years ago.

Now they're selling Commodores, Imprezzas and Humbers ?

i made a very similar comment to Jay last week.  I cant argue when he tells me that they are selling and often before they hit the floor.  Apparently what they have experienced is a number of existing clients turning over their collections during Covid as the market has been quite strong in classics.  I would think the guys sourcing cars for the business will also drift towards stuff they like or know as well.  Obviously there are a couple of the guys in the team that love an 80's tragic.  😁

In poker it's Game Theory Optimal to increase the size of your bet when you increase the frequency of your bluffs.

Maybe he's now applying that to carsales pricing so he can bluff on selling more cars to satisfy the missus.
