Cayman S 987 Clutch

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I have just had a PPI completed on a 2007 Cayman S and the report stated that there was vibration through the clutch pedal and rattle on start up, suspect dual mass flywheel (if fitted) or a clutch unit fault. The vehicle drives well on the road and the clutch has a good "Bite". The inspection was completed by a Porsche specialist however I do not have the opportunity to speak with him until Monday!

I was interested in anyone's thoughts re the comments and also what an approximate price for replacement would be (I am in Adelaide) as a negotiating point if I was to go ahead with the purchase. My only other concerns with the PPI were a minor leak from the sump seal and some error codes!

Any thoughts or advice? I am totally new to the Porsche experience!

Factor in 5 or 6 grand for the repair along with IMSB while you're in there as it'd be silly not to replace that as well. There's plenty of these cars for sale so if the rest of the car stacks as a bargain or exactly what you're looking for go right ahead and have the dude/yard sharpen his pencil!

Re the sump, apparently it has had a minor leak for some time, its so minor that it does not drop oil on the ground, just enough to show underneath, the rattle on start up is allegedly the clutch according to the Porsche specialist in WA (Pace Auto Werks), he stated there was a "vibration through the clutch pedal and rattle on start up however it drove well with plenty of bite". Just in two minds whether to proceed and this is why I'm trying to establish some feedback re costs and peoples opinions (I will get some quotes on Monday for clutch replacement).

Someone told me you had to split the case to change the ims bearing on these motors... Not sure how accurate that is...

I think your onto something there Mike !

From memory the m96 Motor had two variants of the IMS Bearing the M97 motor used a larger IMS bearing which could not be simply removed when you split the Engine Transmission.

I didn't think these later M97 bearings were cause for concern. Bore scoring seems to have raised its head on the 3.4 M97 engines.

However with all of these things in real terms how many cars were effected and how big the issue has become perpetuated via online forums (like this one) may be two very different matters
