Hi Doug, Gosh I am shocked by all this!!

A change is as good as a holiday

my back story on here should mean my latest decisions are not shocking, rather par for the course?  This week I'm thinking M3 and cup car, next week it'll be a Kombi and a go kart.  I'll sit tight for a bit and not jump too quickly with the next move.  Imagine the craziness if I actually had spare time to ponder this shit.

Can you believe not 1 call on the GT4 at 190, 187, 179k over the last 2 weeks or so.  Correction I did have a "prestige dealer" who shall remain nameless call this morning, he'll get a call back tomorrow morning on my way to PCM drop off.  Might be a diversion in his direction and end up swapping GT4 and Q7 for a pushbike and an F40?

GLWS, you'll regret it...

You mean like when I sold my 964C2 manual after 4 months for $63k thinking how clever I was to have flipped it for $12k profit.  Never regretted that one......??

i assume GT4 stagnating on the market will pass but now is right for me to hop out, so be it.  A very small hit in the scheme of prestige car depreciation.  Trade in vals on my Q7, buying that bloody thing is a bigger regret!  Sheesh.

Why do Audi's depreciate so much?  Even Mercedes Benz.  My C250 cost $96000 3 years ago.  It has 21000 klms on it.  It just ran out of warranty and the 3 years guaranteed new replacement for old with MB Insurance ended.  New renewal notice came in from MB Insurance with car shown as now insured for market value.  The amount they had on it $39000!!!!!

I would hate to think what I would get as a trade in so i am keeping it.  The amount of klms I do mean that it will have 30000 on it in 2020.  I would rather give it to someone in the family than trade it for $40K.

Because 'prestige' cars sell to people who are leasing, not buying. Few with a lease want an old one, "I'll just get a new one thanks". Everyone else is scared what it will cost to fix if it goes bad because of prestige parts and servicing costs in this country.

I've found that you can sell most MBs and Audis for virtually the same price at 3 years or 5 years, and I'm saying a price to make a sale happen, not the private 'sales' that are $5k under what a dealer is asking.

Example 1: went to trade a 3L Q5 at the 3yr mark, trade was $33k (list $88k, paid $77k drive away). Ended up selling at the 5 year mark privately for $33k, trade offered was $28k.

Example 2: went to trade ML merc (list $127k, paid $104k) at 3yrs, trade was $38k. Sold at 5yrs for $36k, trade $32k.

Example 3: is still yet to happen but that is going to be the worst, the new XC90, $128k list, $95k drive away! - can't wait for the hit on that one.

Moral of the story - f*#k prestige cars! Wouldn't buy them but happy wife happy life supposedly (not that she likes the volvo ?).

My wife is not car crazy or should I say brand obsessed.  All she wants is a Mazda 2.  She says it does all she needs and is cheap to buy, cheaper to run, easy to park and holds it value well.  All good points that I cannot argue with.  We had a Mazda 2 but sold it when my daughter decided to go OS to the UK for a year and we suddenly had another Mazda 2 to mind while she went there.  As such my wife said "stupid having 4 cars for just 2 of us, so sell mine and I will drive her Mazda 2 until she returns".  My daughter returns in 6 months and then we will only have 2 cars the C Class and the Porsche.  My wife does not want to drive either so I have a problem.  She hates how the Merc beeps and does things all by itself to assist with driving.  She likes the simplicity of  P R D N, a brake and an accelerator, what else is needed?

What to do?  She wants another Mazda 2 but I don't want 3 cars again. Selling the Merc is crazy based on the logic in my earlier post above.  As such I have decided to just wait and cross that road when January arrives and my daughter takes back her car.  I know what everyone will say "upgrade to a new Porsche for me, sell the Merc and buy a Mazda".  More likely scenario will be keep the current Porsche and change the Merc for a new Mazda but I cannot see the logic in doing this.

Upgrading to a Mazda 2 from a Merc just seems wrong.  I guess I will try and convince her to drive the Merc more.  She has driven it twice in 3 years.  Likes riding in it but hates driving it.

What to do????

Gosh I hope my daughter does not read this forum, because if so I am dead and will be outvoted 2 to 1and she will get the Merc.  I also may also be outvoted on the new Porsche but I like your thinking?

Ok I have 6 months to work out a plan where my daughter gets a new car for supporting the purchase of a new 911 to alter the vote to 2 to 1 in my favour.  I am quite partial to a new Targa GTS in white.

This could work I will get my little brain working on a plan .  Daughter new car (whatever she wants within reason), wife gets her old Mazda or a new one if this sweetens the deal and I somehow make it all sound like we are banking money if I buy a Targa.  Now to start crunching numbers on the sly.  I am seeing my daughter in a few weeks so I will run the deal past her once all the ducks are lined up.  Thanks @JWM

Everyone keep your eyes on the death notices in the paper if this plan goes pear shaped.  That is the down side of this plan.  My wife looks sweet and innocent but she gets really nasty when I start talking about buying cars.  I expect a big turn out of Porsches at my funeral.:Innocent:

While you are waiting for the phone to ring

Think Escort Think BMW M5. Think 9000 RPM +  Think bad greek economy and you could buy ….

You speaka my language!

Ironically Theodossi was the dealer I went to see, nice fella, but couldn’t match the PCM buy price so next stop was PCM, job done, they are now the proud owners (again) of the white GT4.  Oh and I just remembered to peel off the haunted hills scrutineering sticker before I arrived ?

Old man Theodossi was telling me about the new McLaren he bought into stock this week.  Guy owned it 1 WEEK and dropped $150k when he offloaded it.  I thought I was hasty....!   Nice collection of late model prestige stuff and they own them all outright ?

He says it happens all the time, bloke buys lairy orange Lambo, arrives home and cops a blast from the missus, rings Theodossi to save his marriage.  To make up for it, He buys nice red RS6 wagon for the wife arrives home she says, nah prefer my Mazda 2 (ala @Lucky Phil) and he’s off to see Theodossi again.

I drove a nice C63S - brute of a car but borderline undriveable, heavy front end, bash crash suspension.  Surprisingly unappealing.

Jesus Phil you’re worse then me with the deliberations and internal wrangling.  Good luck.  I know a nice GT4 in white that would suit you ?

Buying a new car for your daughter?   Can I be adopted by you? :D

It will all be hers anyway one day so all I am really doing is spending her inheritance.  Anything we spend on her is just an advance on the inheritance and this is how I look at it.  May as well keep her happy while we are alive and take some enjoyment from her happiness, as you are a long time dead and life is too hard for a lot of young people today without the "Bank of Mum and Dad" to help out sometimes.  The trick is "sometimes" not "always" and help out when they least expect it.  I get more pleasure out of giving than receiving I must admit.

No 2 daughter just rang to say she and boyfriend had bought a unit in Essendon, and dad, can you help us out a little with the deposit........

Now will just wait for the wailings of no 1 daughter who is 3 years older and doesn;t have a cent to her name.  sigh.........

Silver lining to this is that settlement on the unit is the Thursday before Porsches on the Pier.  Might have to come over to help move on the Saturday......
