Coastr Posted 19May, 2018 Report Share Posted 19May, 2018 Never had a Nissan of any kind, but always did covet that IRS. Why the stanza and 180b etc didn’t get it was never explained to me.

This ruined affected the 200B and Stanzas series.

Niko Posted 19May, 2018 Report Share Posted 19May, 2018 They put Lucas electrical systems and REPCO clutches into the very late 1600,s and then into the 180B's which were never up to scratch. you would often see one headlight dim even during the day when you had no lights on...and the alternators would need changing at early intervals.. Clutches would go at about 50 to 60k theonly saving grace for the 180B (buck80) was that the SSS (super sonic shit)coupe and the station wagons remained fully imported from Japan, with all the good gear in them. the Stanza just couldn't fill the big reputation and legendary history that the 1600 had made. Different suspension set up didn't help its cause. The P510/1600 could have ran for a few more years.....even with the Australian content problems. OZ930 Posted 19May, 2018 Report Share Posted 19May, 2018 One reflective magazine report on the Datsun went something like "the Datsun 1600 was a great car and Datsun can only go downhill from here...and they did"

I used to leave it in first and just rev the little bugger until my ears couldn't take any more just for laughs, and for an excuse to get a new motor. It would not die no matter how much I abused it. firstone
firstone Posted 20May, 2018 Report Share Posted 20May, 2018 They really went downhill eh. I had a 2000 pulsar. I checked the oil at 10k klm before the service. Just a lick on the dipshit. New engine was the end of that story then sold it. A mate has had so many 1600s I couldn't count. All great cars.
Lucky Phil Posted 20May, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 20May, 2018 Thread seems to be going well. Just love that orange 2 door on page 1. I guess you could build a 2 door out of a 4 door shell. Still on the case here looking for one to start the process. Really keen now on a Datsun 1600 as I need a 2019 project once the bathroom and laundry are finished (couldn't be any more expensive). I want to end up with something that looks similar to the orange 2 door. I may look at Vic Datsun Car Club to see if they can help. @Niko you were a member of the Datsun CC if I recall an earlier post?

I will post up some photos, it eventually became a sports sedan, although I had it street registered for some time. It can be done but the front doors on the 4 door car are not as big as the original 2 door car. But if done properly it is hard to tell the difference,. I'm still a current member of the NISSAN CAR CLUB AUSTRALIA which was the DATSUN CAR CLUB AUSTRALIA. It is a Victorian Club you could put a wanted ad in their magazine. 1600,s ...They are still out there, but hard to pry out of current owners hands. the bloke that ended up buying mine and raced it, (who is a good mate) is also in the market for a 1600, and we have been looking for a suitable car for a year or so, with no luck so far. Most up for sale have been modified and they want big bucks for a molested car. we are looking for an original, 1600 that he will restore into a replica BRE type street car, keeping the L motor. We are not interested in turbo motors or later Nissan motors transplanted where the L series should be. They are a few still around in the US (2 and 4 door) but we are chasing a RHD. Ok, it seems I will have a problem finding one. If you happen to find two yell out and I will take the spare one . I am in the UK next month so I will do a local scan to see what is available but it would most likely be a rusted heap with the weather and salted roads over there and import costs would make it a bit pricy. Just had a thought, Datsun 1600's are now 50 year old cars so this is going to be a big challenge finding a decent one in original trim. Niko Posted 21May, 2018 Report Share Posted 21May, 2018 I'll keep you in mind. I think your on the right track with doing one up. i hope you keep it to an L motor. be interesting to see if there is anything over in the UK. I don't think they were big on DATSUNS, what with escorts, capris and cortina's and the like. Im away from home for a few days but I will post up some shots of my old converted 2 door. It's not that hard to do. A bloke called Gordon DOBIE who was well very known for his Roadster capabilities, (as in Fairlady's and 2000's) as a driver and workshop guru, did the sealing up of the rear doors of my 1600. Stew F Posted 21May, 2018 Report Share Posted 21May, 2018 My 2nd car was a powder blue 1969 D1600. Great car, and fast as. My carbie shit itself, so I put a 350 holley on it. Then extractors and a nice sounding zorst. Then a hot cam. Then wide TA Radials on the back on widened steelies with the original hubcaps. That car could do 115 mph. I remember spinning those TA's in all 4 gears on a wet road. Then some old dear ran up my arse and wrote it off. I've always been a fan of the coupe.
