Datsun 1600 Appreciation Thread

Does look nice and as @Lucky Phil says these are rare on the ground in Australia.

If your friend is serious, consider getting in contact with companies like Nippon2U on FB. I am also keen on the Coupes and watch their FB feed and these get listed from time to time. I am pretty sure suggest prices landed are 75% of that linked.

Here’s my Datsun 1600. 
It’s a 2 door sedan import from the States. 
The original plan was to make it all shiny and neat with a new paint job, and the colour I chose for it was Porsche Sport Classic Grey. I painted the engine bay that colour, but now that it’s on the road, I like the rat look too much and so t think I’ll ever paint the rest of it. 
It’s got an S15 SR20det motor with 6 speed gearbox. Recaro interior. GTR brakes & coilovers. All new running gear, sss dash (converted to RHD), NOS lights throughout. Completely rewired and 17” SSR reverse mesh wheels. Power is at 190kws at the wheels and the car weighs 1050kgs, so it’s a lot of fun to drive. 
Now that it’s pretty much finished, I’m on the hunt for an air cooled 911 project.

I think you should sell that, 911s are super expensive.......🤔

Yeah, I’m a fan of the 2 door coupes also. I had one before I found this sedan. Prices have risen an amazing amount in the last 5 years.

As have many cars from that era including Porsches.

Soft spot as my first car was an Orange 1600. Still kick myself to this day I almost literally gave it away and didn't just store to restore later.

No problem. I just gave it to a fellow Datsun mechanic in Sydney who’s already converted several cars before. Finding parts wasn’t overly difficult. 
it still had the L series in it back then, but he did smooth the engine bay of the unneeded tabs and holes etc and the Porsche Sports Classic Grey was done at that time too.

I hear you about Porsches. I started my business 6 years ago with the goal of buying a 964 C2 manual after 12 months. 
There were plenty around for 70ish k back then. Doubly that now.

Here’s my Dattos - see my description on page 1. 

oh man if I could get that Blue turbo 1600 back again for $4k.....perfect shell, crazy fast and sideways everywhere, terrible lap times but man that was fun.  The methanol would make the intake manifold all frosty and icy on the outside.  Very effective intercooler!

 

dont want the mullet back though 😂

I spoke to the young lady that I had spoken to on the phone 10 minutes earlier, to be informed that the car was her Grandmothers car that she had been driving. Well Grandma came out of the house to tell me about all her years of glorious ownership, this was 1988. As soon as the grand-daughter opened the car up I looked at my wife & nodded.  

A quick discussion was had about the advertised price & a deal was struck, I think we had a few hundred dollars on us at the time so I sent the wife to the nearest auto-teller to get the rest of the cash whilst I stayed with the Datto, letting Grandma hold the few hundred bucks. No way was I letting someone else get this car.

Oh yeah, $925 was the cost of this Datto. I would go on to build this into one of the best cars I have owned. As seen in the photo, Bluebird TRX wheels were added & the suspension lowered in the first couple of weeks of ownership.

To think that I sold the Lina-mint green 69 Datto 1600 3 weeks after we moved to Mudgee, only to end up with another one. ?

This was the best Datto I owned & still regret to this day selling it, because I didn't need too.

In these days of isolation, I want another 1600 to tinker with.  Is $15k where it’s at for a good starting point?

A mate has been looking for a while and $10k certainly doesn’t get you anything resembling an actual car. 
 

He’s now looking at Stanza’s instead, which are cool and a fraction of the price.

 I saw a nice white one recently with $25k on the window, so it depends how optimistic the seller is I s'pose

I thought it was a good price, went through the photos and there it was.....or rather there it wasn't.....No L16  I'd even accept a L18 or L20.

Not a fan of those engine transplants....Sorry for that.     But that's why they're called 1600's. 

Modify them, but keep the L engines.   Old skool opinion...Sorry.

I would be hunting down an L18 or L20 donk to bring the engine bay back to how it should look

Yep, I looked at the photos first and thought...damn someone has butchered another one....:PissedOff:

Then I seen it was one of your creations...so it all fell into place.;)

One thing I was always disappointed with, was that you could never get a "good" front spoiler, they were always the same design, which never quite worked for me.

Were those guard extensions taken off/moulded off L34 Torana?
