I heard some bloke who was the leader of the local Victorian road cyclists .   Or some such organisation. On 3AW this afternoon with Tom ELLIOT Discussing this exact subject.  The bike bloke said a couple of the MAJOR reasons they should be allowed to ride side by side is that bike riding is very social, and they can chat while riding together, PLUS a lot of business deals are done in the saddle...?   Really.....

so ...  if all the socialising and business deals are done on the rides.   WTF do they have to talk about when they all take over the local coffee shops drinking their skinny soy gluten free flat white late’s

Inevitable really. Sadly.

The world's gone and got itself stubborn and intolerant. Acting foolish and childish, teaching the next generation to be worse.

It should be embarrassing, but " I f#*kn told him" is proudly announced instead.

Rules don't fix behaviour. Compassion does.

Where all fed up with the way things are and taking it out on each other. Get the sh1t off the liver by making a random pay for your inability to "LIFE " as the teenagers say.

The thing is , motorcyclists don't ride two abreast -  and when they want to chat on the road they have these whizzbang talkie things.
You reckon it's bad in Oz , take a trip to Scotland or Ireland on them really narrow roads (full of tourists who normally dive on the right, and the odd bus or tractor with trailer.).

They're fracking brave cyclists around these parts!

That said , I'm in Dublin right now and there are plenty of old people (must be selected rats) buzzing in and out of busy traffic with no helmets and not a honk from anyone.

Fortunately older (from an era of personal responsibility) people still have a self preservation gene. It is those that think a helmet and a road rule will save them from any harm that are the problem. The attitude should be that the cyclyst is the only looser in any accident and that everything is out to get them and it is soley up to the cylist to avoid any harm.

Instead of whinging about others, just focus on what is good in your life and move on.

What do you think most think of us and our cars? They see mostly middle age guys driving single occupant in convoy in the hills playing Fangio in our mid life crisis buys! Then fill local cafe car parks and sit around chatting....

Just hang back and overtake when safe to do so, just like you do with any other slower traffic. Riding 2 abreast is actually safer for both the cyclist and motorist in most instances.

While we are on the subject......and.....Just to fire this up a tad more.

I do a brisk walk(well I think it's brisk:P) along Peninsula Link Bike/Walking path every morning..

There are signs at each of the various entrances onto the path, requesting that bike riders warn Pedestrians of their approach.

Do you think that happens...

Not on your Nellie...., these prospective olympic gold medal cyclists in their Lycra, come from behind and go ripping past you at Mach1,   like silent death,  scaring the bejeezus out of you as they pass you.

Is it above them to ring a bell, or maybe even give a yell "coming through on your right etc etc"

If one of you nice bike riders out there..can explain why you can't do that I would appreciate it.....

I see probably five or six on each walk and non do the courtesy thing.

The plodder bike rider in a pair of stubbies and t-shirt (like me) nearly always lets you know they are coming through.

So maybe once you put the lycra on, it gives you free reign over anyone else...

Also when they come through in a group of 3 or 4,  they take up the entire marked path, so if you walking towards them you must get off the path or suffer the consequences.

I also ride my bike at times on the same path, and do the right thing, and often get a thanks or a wave from the pedestrian(s).

Just seems a lot (not all) of cyclists want everything their way and bugger anyone else.

SO they are not only causing drama on roads, bike paths, are also a cause for concern.

More popcorn Lee.......

It takes a certain kid of arrogance and selfishness to don the lycra superman suit.

I dont rely on road rules to ensure my safety. I keep an eye out for all danger and actively avoid it. The rules will protect me? is a very poor and dangerous attitude for an activity such as cycling. I also don't drive in convoys and tail gating drivers on country roads deserves another thread.

At the speed push bike riders go they clearly have all day to get to where they are going but it seems they are so selfish and inconsiderate that they do what they can to ensure everybody else also takes all day to get to their destination.

The wife came home the other day really excited due to for the first time ever a single cyclist dinged a bell when coming up behind her on a walking path. Now if only the other 99.99999% would do the same.

The point about the road rules was in direct reply to Pauly that cars are not allowed on a cycle path but as bicycles are classed by government as a vehicle can claim a whole lane on the road!.

You may not drive with others then, but do you just go for drives for the sake of a drive? Also don't drive at night or dawn and dusk since you live out in the country? If you actively want to avoid all danger, you would only get in your car unless absolutely necessary given close to 9,000 people have been killed on Victorian roads since 1989!

And enough with the generalizations! I see motorist breaking laws by running lights or on their mobiles driving everyday, but never say all motorists are scofflaws. Reality is that it is an even spread  percentage wise of the population regardless of the method of transportation are f'wits! Best lesson I was taught when I started driving to think that everyone else is an idiot trying to kill themselves and you so drive defensively expecting this. That is regardless of the vehicle I'm using at the time, be it one of my cars, motorbike or bicycles or the method of transportation by those around me!

People have also suggested physical injury - remember the other person is just that. They aren't a cyclist, they are someones child, sibling, partner, parent!

I came home today and 99% of the people I encountered didn't say please or thank you, didn't indicate when changing lanes, didn't hold the door open for a female (sensitive issue, I know), walked across my path to enter a store, didn't have their money (card) ready to pay and had to faff about, welcome to now.  I wonder if they were also cyclists?

Yep you are correct I avoid driving at dusk and dawn. The roos are really bad at the moment. When I go for a drive it always involves a destination and money spending so doing my bit to help the surrounding economy.

But most importantly I never hold anyone up and delay them (while Im driving a P car) from going about their business whatever it is. Something no pushbike rider can claim.

If your holding someone up get out of their way and let them by. That way we can all go about our business with less agro.

Hey Guys your'e either a cyclist or not this is clear! I understand the issues at hand Hell I'm a avid cyclist and a Porsche driver and I never go over the speed limit never cross double lines and certainly never chase other Porsche drivers around mountain passes endangering others. On a more serious note cycling is a very social sport that has proven health benefits both mentally and physically (apart from the ones that get killed by people driving cars whilst not concentrating reading or sending txt messages)

The benefits on our Health system in having a healthy fit ageing population is tremendous, the numbers are staggering........... I don't know about you but I haven't worked all my life to reach 65 and drop dead and not enjoy the fruits of my labour. On that note I'd really love to hear from...... lets start with the people commenting on this thread to date as to how they rate their health and what they are doing to ensure they have a healthy happy later life.

One things for sure when I catch up with you all on the drive days sipping our lattes and eating our poached eggs with whipped avocado we have a solid mutual respect and share a love of all things Porsche making us feel good about ourselves and our lives. Why deny cyclist or any other bunch of people such joy, be patient when approaching a cyclist encourage mutual respect.

Good behaviour and mutual respect encourages like for like isn't that a better approach the fact that we can't wait for 10-20-30 seconds to pass a cyclist is a little absurd where are you going in such a hurry anyway
