Time isn't the issue, just whether 2 old guys can figure out what to do from watching youtube videos.

Thanks for the clarification.

No valve adjustment to do,spark plugs are a pain, but oil changes are  no drama, other than it is not possible to not spill some oil removing the filters.

Ask Kevin :)

Don't know that I'd really do it with one of those other than say a 1 bar tune and a set of ZC Turbos.  They are lovely things to drive and more a point to point car than something you'd track with any seriousness, it takes a bit to get them well sorted for that work and with the march of technology there's better, newer, faster stuff around.

It took a while but I now have a  set of those zero clearance turbos with the new wheel.  Bit of a waste at 1 bar but   thinking closer to x2 stock and circa  1.3 bar to get the best out of them.

Toyota 86 spark plugs impossible to change without really small hands, so guessing same issue on the 993. But 12 to change instead of 4. There goes another whole day of "work"

Two old guys won't have any trouble!  With spark plugs only needing to be changed every 80,000 or 100,000km it's a pretty rare task nowadays.  Most servicing is just oil and filters, with air and fuel filters less frequent.  Check the fan and AC belt tension and condition and you're done.

I wouldn't let servicing worry you.

However be alert to leaky engines, noisy lifters and sluggish cam chain tensioners as these will cost you to fix.  The other 993 issue to be aware of is whether the AC evaporator has been replaced.

Irrespective, 993's are lovely things

Yep, not everything will be DIY-able, especially as not looking to have a garage queen but want to drive it as many friends are now already building their collection of man-toys. And they are driving them more than just a Sunday cruise.

Looks great, low kms Varioram manual; 993's are not quite on the radar at the moment with G series and the 964 taking the limelight for now, I'm not saying they're cheap or readily available but there's just not the hype around them at present. I personally believe the 993 represents great value for money when compared to the aforementioned, I personally prefer/believe that 993 is an outstanding drivers car, it only takes a few tweaks to the suspension to bring them into their own in the handling stakes.

This just got listed today and looks great as well

In the add they quote the following about this car.

"It has received a number of very worthwhile upgrades that make it so much like a 993 RS to drive it's uncanny but without the $600k price tag."

Bilstein PSS9 suspension with Eibach lowering springs, Fister 993 mufflers,  short shift kit, strut brace, 993RS steering wheel, RS engine mounts, RS touring clutch and flywheel ( perfect balance with no chatter ) Make no mistake, the above upgrades were not just thrown together without the end result in mind. Much consideration was given to their suppliers and what has been installed is generally regarded by 993 owners groups the world over as the best 993 upgrades available for their respective purpose; hence it all comes together so nicely.

It's interesting to see what's happening with 993 prices over the last 18 months.  I was watching this market segment very closely from around Jan 2017 when I decided to get my first P.  I drove a number of them. Manuals and tips. From a '94 through to a '97 C2S that I almost purchased until I found out at the PPI that it had a significant rust problem and pulled out.  And then went ahead with a manual 996 tt which was a very different car but has been loads of fun as well.  Still love the 993 design and the smaller cockpit, air cooled etc.

The prices seem to be very varied.  A top '97 CS2 or 4 is still fetching around the 190-200k mark.  Some are asking alot more but I don't think they will get it.

Others like this one above with k's seem to be creeping up slightly in expectations.  '96 with Varioram is higher sought after.  A few minor changes to std spec. I feel that it should be priced around 15-20k lower but maybe the owner is expecting to haggle.

Is anybody seeing a standout " must buy " if I had the $ manual 993 out there ?

993's that are well looked after are great buying in and around these prices, my guess is that they will hold well over time. I'm not so sure of the 964 and G series which have had an  explosion in pricing over the last 3-4 years which may see them pull back  over the coming years.

How do you like the 996TT ?

@Scott SS964 the TT is awesome.  I have taken it on some pretty awesome tracks including a number of the Targa Tasmania stages and it's just a pleasure to drive in terms of handling ability and raw power when you want it.  I'm sure it makes me feel like a better driver than I actually am.  The thing I find is that when I drive it it's a real challenge to not want to put your foot down an unleash the beast :)  ... which makes it tough for short trips ... and keeping my licence !

I still toy with the idea of getting a 993

The TT is a car that I have always liked the idea of loads of power and comfort the ideal daily that i would never daily ?  - I have tended to do the GT3 thing whereby when i want a track day to get the speed demon out of the system its the perfect weapon of choice however like the TT it is very difficult to drive on the road properly (I try and do a monthly long country loop in the hills which its perfect for) without losing your licence!!

Thats where the 993 in standard C2 manual form for me is a perfect car that i use often its got the classic interior that I love, the body shape is curvaceous and beautiful to look at constantly; the performance is just enough to give you a thrill and involving enough to meet those "needs". Its a fantastic roadie  ----it's the perfect allrounder from my perspective.

Your comments about the 993 really resonate with me.  This is one of the nicer looking 993's on the market at the moment IMO

On the market at the "moment"!

I think he's been trying to sell that for over 3 years!

I think it's a pricing issue rather than a reflection on the car.

Yes agree !   It's had multiple price down revisions.  Makes you wonder whether people just hope that there is some sucker out there who doesn't do their homework on a fair price or actually doesn't really want to or need to sell it.

Hi all,

The car above has been listed for awhile now and I'm wondering if anyone has had a chance to check it out and if so, what are your thoughts?

Been meaning to myself but unfortunately haven't had the chance yet.

As I'm looking for a long term hold I've had my mind on a later year varioram model, but the mods on this one do seem nice. Wondering how it drives with the mods and whether it looks as good in the flesh as it photographs?

Why do you think it hasn't sold? Too much, not as desirable with those mods, everyone wants a varioram model, etc? And what do you think it's worth?

Thank.

993 buyers tend to be very picky on km’s and originality compared to 901 or G series buyers (I have no idea why). I suspect that the combination of modifications, km’s (despite rebuild) & non various ram are dragging it down. All silly reasons in my view....go take a look !! BTW, my 993 is a manual non varioram & I never felt it’s lacking in anyway....

good luck....

If your interested in this 993 i would do my own inspection and DD - The modifications are very worthwhile and there is nothing that has been done that cannot easily be returned to standard.

993's seem to be a little quiet in recent times, being over shadowed by the extreme popularity of the 964 and G series cars. This is a fact.

One might see this as a window of opportunity to buy one of these gems, get the right car and they are that good.

Thank.

Agree +1with Scott  ..

Additionally, I think its just cycles of favouritism . .. get one when they are outta vogue. @alps   . Save yourself a few bucks , negotiate hard, time on market isnt always a bad thing, just go look, dont listen to the speculators and folk law .

I truly get the 964 appeal, great cars, but I am deep in love with my 993 and its soon to its 23rd anniversary with me. Changed more wives, tyres and real-estate,  rather than this car.

964 is the end of look and era , 993 a noticeable edge on the 964 as a driver for me. I doubt I could return to Gseries.

993 -  Comfy,  Functional A/C,  Good cabin noise levels for longer runs, very liveable, mine has been super reliable yet regularly pushed, good handling and still feeling classic.

Personally I wouldnt worry about absolute purity, I would buy one to drive. That said major mods would be warrant downward price adjustments for me.
