Merv Posted 4September, 2018 Report Share Posted 4September, 2018 We often have posts about IMS, RMS, etc., issues and I wondered what is the Boxster with the highest recorded 'mileage' (kms) in Australia, particularly with its original motor? JWM Posted 4September, 2018 Report Share Posted 4September, 2018 I’ll start the bidding at 249,600km ? https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Porsche-Boxster-1998/SSE-AD-5262608 Although it had a rebuild at 218,000 it says.
Merv Posted 4September, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 4September, 2018 Whoa! What a start. I think it is good to show the longevity of these cars, despite the regular gloom and doom portrayals. Others?
Troubleshooter Posted 4September, 2018 Report Share Posted 4September, 2018 Was a 986 for sale at a yard in Qld a year back for about 9 months in the high 3's, something like 385000, orig motor - BULLETPROOF
tazzieman Posted 5September, 2018 Report Share Posted 5September, 2018 It all depends upon how they are looked after and how they are driven, including climatic conditions. We've got drivers ranging from grannies to Berserkers in PFA alone.

Merv Posted 5September, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 5September, 2018 I really expected to see lower numbers. These are amazing and encouraging. I wonder what % have had the IMS done. I like the point about climatic conditions. The first owner of my car (sadly only 35,000 kms) told me it had never seen rain. It now has.
ANF Posted 5September, 2018 Report Share Posted 5September, 2018 I have heard of 400k+ on 996s, 986s and the like should be the same. IMS is still a storm in a tea cup with extremely low failure rates.

Sitting in hot climates (including garages) plus city driving + number of engine heat cycles etc. The wiring will eventually toast itself , along with sensors. 21st century Porsches will become as unreliable as 20th century ones, if not moreso It's all modern cars not just the "bulletproof" ? P cars.
Merv Posted 5September, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 5September, 2018 Perhaps better built than many however.

Coastr Posted 6September, 2018 Report Share Posted 6September, 2018 Guy behind hoovies garage YouTube channel bought his 996 with 250,000 miles on it. That’s 400,000 km. It was running fine until he killed it ona track day which was probably oil starvation. He replaced with an LS swap and just killed that motor at the same track. *maybe a long high G corner is killing his engines?* problem with digital speedos you can’t see how many miles cars got to before they ended in scrap yards. Was always fun to find the highest mileage car in a wreckers.
Merv Posted 6September, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 6September, 2018 True. As a teenager I spent hours prowling the wreckers yard. So much to learn from cars laid open.

Merv Posted 6September, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 6September, 2018 Ha ha. Not for me, after I saw the owner, a man called Wanless, throw a shifting spinner and hit man in the head when he tried to walk out with something not paying. Worked for me.
