micknine01 Posted 18September, 2018 Report Share Posted 18September, 2018 So for some strange reason, I am having this urge to own an early 2 door rangie. I have been looking for some time now, seeing them listed anywhere from 3k to 70k. Then a friend of a friend has put me onto a guy who has 4 in his backyard ranging between 79 to 84 models, some matching number, mostly complete, none are running and have sat out in a paddock for years, so condition is poor. They look like a nightmare to restore and I really don’t need the headache, but I keep wondering if they are worth pursuing at $1000 for the lot? Advice, opinions and past experiences welcomed turboT
firstone Posted 18September, 2018 Report Share Posted 18September, 2018 Sell them first. They belong with a tragic. Unless you really want to go down that path. Then look for the one you want. micknine01 and symsy
tazzieman Posted 18September, 2018 Report Share Posted 18September, 2018 You need the really early ones. The others will send you broke as you desperately search for an "enthusiast" "collector". micknine01

Very good 2 d Rangies from the '70s are selling for huge money in UK - but the rest are practically worthless. Like a 928, - a cure for happiness. The Jap 4WDs killed the later Rangies and these days there are so many good 4WDs that nobody should put time or money into a 20yo Rangie. Suggest you refocus & get a V8 Cayenne. clutch-monkey, firstone and micknine01

The best bet is to buy the whole heap and part them out in 10 years' time. As we know , when the 1st series of anything is in collector's hands , the worth of the 2nd series escalates. micknine01 Posted 19September, 2018 Author Report Share Posted 19September, 2018 Thanks for your input gents, like I suspected, I should probably run a mile. If I’m going to go deep into a restoration, it really should be something with a P badge on it. Better than the ‘back yard find’ that I was considering, although not numbers matching and unmolestered. Hang on a minute, does that stuff even matter in LR world?.? micknine01 Posted 29June, 2019 Author Report Share Posted 29June, 2019 Update on my curiosity... i bought a 73 suffix B rangie, sight unseen, usual story. Got it home, completely stripped it, full resto in progress. Still don’t know why I’m doing this, but it’s happening. Harvs11 Posted 30June, 2019 Report Share Posted 30June, 2019 Had an 85 Rangie for a while. Total shitter with every panel a different shade when I first got it. Perfect! No guilt or cringe going hard in the bush. After I updated the very saggy suspension and gave engine a tune up I had about five years of dirty fun. Explored all sorts of tracks around Vic, dunes, river crossings, mud, did it all without fuss. Gutless v8, heavy and thirsty but loved it just the same. micknine01
Coastr Posted 30June, 2019 Report Share Posted 30June, 2019 Back in the day I was working on a project car at someone else’s workshop. They were restoring 2 door Range Rover when people were still using them. There was a lot of cursing. As I recall getting the seats out took 32 bolts, and fist sized rust holes in the floor underneath. I wonder if that car ever got back on the road. Gregonmac Posted 20July, 2019 Report Share Posted 20July, 2019 I'm in the final throws of resto to a '79 2 door.... absolutely beautiful in it's original "highway yellow"...would I do it again...definitely not. A very expensive hobby where they're going through the roof in the UK but not here in Oz. I'm going to sell mine for am early 911...more fun to drive ! Mine is now a bare shell and 4 pallets of loose parts, very slippery slope... maybe the key is to find a UK buyer when you sell?

Dry Aus climate helps longevity. Could be worth it to send a good one back micknine01 and Mike-S
Mike-S Posted 21July, 2019 Report Share Posted 21July, 2019 I plan on finding a few over the next couple of years for sending to the UK, a mate of mine there is a Land Rover specialist (looked after my Rangie’s for years) and he wants them to restore himself, he also has customers wanting them. Really, you need to have someone there to receive them as many people won’t buy sight unseen. Same as here really. micknine01
