Colour change - full respray

Hi there.  Assuming I found my perfect modern Porsche but it was in a colour I didnt really like.  Does anyone know the following:

- Can you get it resprayed in a different colour and have it look factory good (or better)

- How much would such a job cost?

- In Melbourne, who would be a good company to go to for such a thing?

- Assuming the new colour was not an outlandish colour, what do people think this would do to resale value?  Would it tank based on not having the colour from the VIN?

Appreciate any help.

Can’t just wrap it? Or is this the grail that you keep forever?

If the re-spray is better than factory, i’d say it would detract nothing, but also add nothing. A bad job though, could make the car non-saleable. Ditto goes for non-factory crazy colours.

I guess the real question is, are you going to keep this car forever? If so who gives a stuff what it does to resale.

Answers:

- yes better than factory finish is possible, but for a color change that means a total strip down and rebuild.

- lots and lots and lots. $20k upwards

- no idea

- yes, resale value would be impacted.  Most people will question why the repainted and color change and assume an unpleasant damage story.

I've been quoted anywhere from  $15k to $45k 'or probably more' by a few different shops. Just depends who does it, how reputable they are and how much Porsche tax they add. Not to mention any hidden bodywork problems you may encounter which can double or triple the price if it's knackered underneath, as once you've removed the paint there's no turning back.

As they've mentioned above, I'd wrap it, as that's a cheap(er) mistake than a full bare metal repaint

+1 on wrap. Paint in a better than factory in my book means a window/engine out paint job that would also add cost of ancillary items like window/door rubbers wiring loom clips etc which to me means you would probably need to have it done by a Porsche specialist that knows how to pull these Cars aapart amd put it back together again so it looks stock.

A good wrap job will be about $6k for a computer cut template. To get a better coverage in the normal annoying spots where a wrap shows the base colour ie inside doors, sills etc they would need to hand cut and might cost extra.

Benefits of wrap as said above is back to original if you on sell vs a high paint cost that you will never recover and potentially take a hit on.

If you are looking for a specific car I always suggest put it out on here as there is a wider Porsche community that we all have outside of the forum and I would hit up a couple of broker/wholesalers that source cars for dealers.

i was talking to my contact at Dutton’s on Friday and certainly they see a hell of a lot of cars they don’t buy, however if I wanted something they would get it in for a clip over wholesale.

Ok thanks all.  For those suggesting a wrap, can you get whatever color you want, or are you restricted to whatever colors come off the shelf?  I would be after an Oak Green Metallic wrap - could I order such a thing?

Wait til you find the colour you really want. Any p car not painted in the factory colour coded colour is poo pooed. This day and age paint and panel goes up and up in price and you will over capitalise. Wrap it whichever shade you like I say. And enjoy!

Keep looking, otherwise no matter what you do to it you will always be finding fault with your decision.

Love to know what the colour is you don't like?????

These guys have a bunch of great photos on their site to give you some idea (not affiliated and have never got any work done by them either).

They also have some colour charts here:

I know where there is a 996 in SA  that has a pearl white wrap but it's Oak Green underneath I think. Definitely green anyway. Nice car and I've driven it

Text ya number to me 0407942151 if you want some pics of the 996, as you can see the green sills

I've seen really good vinyl wrap jobs, one owner went as far to order another set of hinges and colour match them so when you open up, it all looked factory. Food for thought.. I think you would burn horrendous amounts of money on getting a car painted, then losing it two fold on resale.

Rhodium silver is the colour I dont like.  It has this blueish tint to it that really turns me off.  GT silver is a much warmer colour, and if it was that colour I would jump on it.

Sell the GT3 and then buy a new GTS in the colour you want? Simples.

I test drove that red GTS (991.2) they had at PCH, lets just say I was a little underwhelmed.  I'm much more interested in an NA engine than any of the turbo offerings.  Maybe the turbos will be better in the 992 models?

Thanks all on the feedback on wraps.  I might try and see some wrap jobs in person.  Something about the 'fakeness' of a wrap bugs me a little.  I will likely need to keep looking for a car with a colour that works for me.

When I was looking at the used Porsche market I considered wrapping but my local Vinyl Wrap convinced me that you really shouldn't be wrapping a car because you don't like the colour but rather more for a fashion or temporary change. He reminded me that when you open the doors or bonnet, etc., you are always going to see the original colour and be reminded of that colour you don't like.

I think you should keep looking and wait for a colour that is acceptable.
