sleazius Posted 31January, 2019 Report Share Posted 31January, 2019 It's supposed to mean 'paint to sample' but these days it's a list of pre-approved colours that you can paint your car for an extra fee, mostly historic porsche colours. It isn't that simple though as the factory doesn't always have a PTS 'window' open when you order your car, so even if you ask for it, your request may not be granted. Additionally you can petition to have a colour added to the list but the process takes 12 months or more and there is no guarantees it will be granted for a number of reasons. There are also Porsche historic colours that they will refuse to do either because they are associated with certain special cars, or they've found with modern paints it's a hard colour to replicate. You can also get instances like RS orange (997.1 RS) where Porsche rejects a bunch of the panels coming out of their own factory so they have dropped it from the list. All that said it seems it is the easiest it has ever been to get PTS approved following dieselgate. Porsche is basically where most of VWs profit comes from, so charging people $20k to pick their own colour off the PTS list is a no brainer. Roughly 5% of requests in the US were previously granted, with the 991.2 GT3 it jumped to all requests being granted. Tips Posted 31January, 2019 Report Share Posted 31January, 2019 A few of us bumped into a guy at the autoHaus gt3 tech night who was waiting on his pts gt3 touring. It was being painted the metalic dark blue which is a stock colour on other current models. Unfortunately he had to pay the $21k to have it. I believe the 918 at the time had a few semi-PTS colours (in the same way that Carmine, Miami, Lava and Chalk are on the 991.2) and those started at $21k USD, when at the time it was $6k US for a true PTS on a GT3. True PTS on the 918 started at $49k USD, and went up from there. The liquid metal paint was $98k US from memory. The repair costs would be astronomical and then the question of the repairer being able to match the original finish!! Even a good spray job would stand out like dogs balls.!!!
