firstone Posted 27April, 2019 Report Share Posted 27April, 2019 My thoughts as well Lee. Startup is rich with fuel and condensation. I've polished them suckers too many times. Bore scores would be easy enough to detect with a ppi.

Dare I say most cars would have that from condensation on start up and/or running rich? I think I remember reading somewhere to watch out for this, it mentioned if happening from one side could be an issue. Usually left bank apparently. Don't tell me I'm getting suckered into the Porsche scaremongering, bore scoring and ims. Yep, ppi the way to go. LeeM

Could this be possible signs of bore scoring?🤔 This is normal. When you start the car it dumps some extra oil to lube things up. If you repeated start/stop cycle then you get a buildup & even oily smoke on startup - for example when pulling out of garage to wash car, then put away, then move to access another car etc etc. Run for a few minutes (take the thing for a spirited drive) and it's all cleaned up again barring a bit of residue on the tailpipe. All in all, a bit of carbon/oil on tailpipe is nothing to worry about. Go see it, drive it. If serious get a PPI. I've had 2 years trouble-free, worry-free with my 987 and I didn't worry about PPI - buy on condition, service history, butt-dyno. firstone

I think you mean extra fuel to richen the air / fuel ratio. I've never heard of extra oil being used on startup. The bore scoring is real in colder climates and starts off with a rhythmic "tick" at idle and one side of the tailpipe showing a more sooty appearance than the other. Have a read of Barry Hart's (www.Hartech.org/) writeup on the problem..... firstone
rufmichan Posted 7June, 2019 Report Share Posted 7June, 2019 There's an interesting Cayman for auction at GraysOnline: https://www.graysonline.com/lot/0001-10038007/motor-vehiclesmotor-cycles/2008-porsche-cayman-manual-coupe-78-473km The thing is it's been auctioned before at 37k some time ago, which is weird. Could the buyer have fallen through due to some reason? https://www.graysonline.com/lot/0001-10037626/motor-vehiclesmotor-cycles/2008-porsche-cayman-manual-coupe-78-473km Another thing is when you search for the rego plates, you can see it's been advertised online before in NSW and one Vic dealership e.g: http://www.avlonline.com.au/Used-Cars-For-Sale/1593611-ed6b4fb85e.sl19-12/PORSCHE/2008-porsche-cayman-987 It's very weird
rufmichan Posted 11June, 2019 Report Share Posted 11June, 2019 There was a 987.1 Cayman S for sale for a grand total of 36k yesterday. I went to get my groceries then in few hours the car was already sold. So I guess it's possible to have a Cayman even an S for under 40k nowadays, though must be extremely rare. Sometimes they pop up around 40k if you keep your eyes open ...had a few mods and 148klms but looked like a good buy

(There must be plenty of people with email alert too by the look of it ) The market looks a bit weird to be honest. I wonder what will happen to other 50-60k listed Caymen if some are willing to sell theirs for 40k or even less. Usually in other car market e.g even for Boxster, you got a continuum of price from lowest to highest depending on their model and kilometre. But for Caymen it seems like some people are asking really high price for the model, then you got odd few in 40k range which then disappears really fast. I just checked the VIN and it's a match. It was being offered by a dealer in Newcastle for $48,000 if I recall. He had it for sale for almost 12 months which caused me some suspicion. Also dodged a bit when I was close to doing a PPI which didn't give me confidence. I tracked down the original owner and spoke to him about it. I have a car history report and photos of the logs books if anyone wants them. I couldn't get to see it in person so passed and bought something else. Is there anything wrong with the car in particular? Did you find out why the first owner let it go? It's just strange seeing it being auctioned twice, after it appearing in several interstate dealerships without any buyer for some time. Techno Posted 12June, 2019 Author Report Share Posted 12June, 2019 First owner was a pharmacist in South Australia. He put most of the milage on it. Turns out he was constantly travelling between 2 shops he had. Sold it due to back problems. Loved owning it. I never found anything wrong with it but as mentioned, didn't get to the stage of a PPPI. rufmichan Posted 26June, 2019 Report Share Posted 26June, 2019 A white 2.7 987.1 Cayman that was sold in VIC dealership until just last month I think has just come up privately in QLD: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/Porsche-Cayman-2007/SSE-AD-6163319/?Cr=1 I checked the rego and the VIN matched with this entry: https://www.autotrader.com.au/car/10498548/porsche/cayman/vic/port-melbourne/coupe Interestingly the safety certificate date in QLD rego is showing entry as early as 10/06/2019, suggesting the vehicle has just been registered in QLD when it's now displayed for sale again. Would be curious to know why it's for sale again in just a span of one month.
Pook Posted 5July, 2019 Report Share Posted 5July, 2019 If anyone is interested in the Graysonline car let me know and I can provide more details. I was passing through Newcastle today so dropped in to see it. Quick summary is: Needed to be jump started. PSM error (probably due to the jump start). Rear disks need replacement but pads seemed almost new. Paint was ok but a circular area about 3 centimetres round in the bonnet had been damaged or badly repaired. Other chips consistent with its age. It had a lot of red dust anywhere they hadn’t detailed. I’ve tried to attach a photo below showing inside the battery box. Not sure it will work from my phone.. It did start with a small amount of smoke as you’d expect. Reved freely. Clutch felt light but obviously couldn’t drive it. Not the car for me, but would only be $37k with buyers premium if you get it at the opening bid price. bear924

rego Posted 17May, 2020 Report Share Posted 17May, 2020 Recently sold my PDK 981 Boxster S and on the look out for a Manual 987 Cayman S or a Manual 996 Carrera. Does anyone know anything about this car? https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2006-porsche-cayman-s-987-manual/SSE-AD-5919933/?Cr=2 Seems to have been around for a while based on the description "Car was taken off the market while I was overseas " so I thought I'd ask.
