Sydney -> Brisbane recommendations

Hey guys,

I was hoping for a bit of advice regarding the most 'fun' way to drive from Sydney to Brisbane and back. I am booked in to do the Level 1 Porsche Track Experience at Mt Cotton on 17.5.19, and I was going to drive my Boxster from Sydney to Brisbane (and back), aiming for an overnight stop halfway on each trip. I was also aiming to not take the fastest route, but rather the most fun route :)

It is basically taking advantage of Putty Road, Thunderbolt Way, and then as much national park as I can south of Brisbane.

Does anyone have any advice regarding the route? Better ways to go? Known police hotspots? Road quality warnings (Thunderbolt way?), Places I should really stop and look at halfway?

Get on to WOKA he took me a great way via the Waterfall Way.  Was a cracker of a route.

Putty Road - absolutely must do!

Thunderbolts Way - Yes, but don't go overboard.  I reckon the section from Gloucester to Walcha will do you and this section is the pick of the full length.  I've been down and back on it in the last two days and it's in the best condition I've seen it in years.  Still rough in sections but the best way to get to the next must do NSW road:

Oxley Highway - Walcha to Wauchope.  Another absolutely.

My other favourite in the New England is the Ebor to Dorrigo Road.

Someone else will need to give you advice on the must do roads in northern NSW as I'm still yet to experience those.

Turning off to bypass Tamworth at Whitehouse Lane is a gravel road and has a creek crossing or two, dry but no bridges.

Alternate 1: turn right at Duri-Dungowan Rd, then left onto Loomberah Rd which then meets up a Calala Ln then as planned

Alternate 2:  stay on the Highway until Tamworth, turn right at second round about onto Calala lane then as planned

If you stay on the highway the “boys” patrol Wallabadah to Tamworth regularly with a hide 3km north of Sugarloaf Hill, another at Top Gowrie Rd with camera cars regularly at the same point and another south of Kingswood, south of the radio tower. Another favourite place is the Moonbi Range, north of Tamworth.

Alternate 3: How much time do you have?

fuel up at BP Wallabadah (cheaper than Tamworth anyway), north of Wallabadah turn right toward Nundle on Lindsay’s Gap Rd to Nundle Rd turn left and follow through to a roundabout, turn right onto Ogunbil Rd, left onto Post Office St, which takes you up the Port Stephens Cutting (very narrow and twisty...caution: trucks and caravans), name changes to Topdale Rd, left onto Thunderbolts Way through to Walcha.  Here you need to make a decision.  Through to Uralla and join the New England Highway then as planned OR turn right and do the 80km Oxley Highway twisties to Wauchope.  Meet the Highway then turn left to Bellingen (Waterfall Way) to Dorrigo to Nymboida to Grafton to Casino then a myriad of backroad options. (More local knowledge than I have is required)

This was the route I was talking about.  Was terrific.

As above @Jason E and @OZ930, the run from Armidale through to Grafton is a must.  From Grafton through I'd avoid the Pacific Highway and maybe head on through Casino, Kyogle and the Mt Lindsay back into Brisbane via Boonah.  Though your route from Tenterfield down is a great bit of road too..  But definitely try and get the Armidale to Grafton drive into it.  I did the Pacific Carpark yesterday up from Coffs..  Meh.  Maclean through to Ballina is just crap, then its boring but easy dual lanes all the way through..

cant argue with the route north, would say that some of the roads around Gresford, Bingulburra and Dungog are either outstanding or more patched potholes than road.

i wouldn't miss Waterfall Way and the Oxley Hwy between Walcha and Wauchope this route would take you back south covering them both, the Oxley has had a huge amount of work done on it and it is exceptional

then once you are at Broke you can decide to head back down the Putty Road or go via Kulnura

Not sure why anyone would want to do the top end of Thunderbolts Way between Uralla and Inverell.

I did the bottom half of that run between Uralla and Bundarra about a month ago and it pretty tedious unless you like drought effected land and roos.  I can't imagine the run from Inverell to Glen Innes is much different. 

After buying a pie and pastry at the Pie Mechanic at Uralla, go east at Armidale I reckon.

Is it a good pie?  I love a good pie.  Please tell me there is solid actual meat rather than that dysenteric "gravy" that seems ubiquitous in "pies" these days.  I'm not bitter or anything.

i always overnight in coffs which means going down waterfall way (and doing the boardwalk at dorrigo!) but anywhere will do really. and avoid the m1 where possible- though it is much upgraded now, it's still boring.

Woka's route is pretty spot on. mt cotton is 15 min away from me so i'd make a slight adjustment. go through murwillimbah as that carries you closer east to where mt cotton is.

from murwillimbah: mt tomewin road up through currumbin then only have a short stint on the M1, or go up through crystal creek and past natural bridge. both are epic roads.

if you choose to go singleton-armidale then turn east through dorrigo and do waterfall way (fun) to stay at coffs, you can bypass m1 to grafton by taking orara way to grafton, then summerland way to kyogle before jumping east to murwillimbah

The most excellent pies I've ever encountered!

Of course they are round in shape as we all know that the flavour doesn't make it into the corners of square pies.  But you knew that didn't you Jason as a pie connoisseur.

Gadzooks!!!  Well I am going to organise a drive asap just to get down there & try the pie that made Pete M sigh !!!!

You're absolutely right Peter, there a 2 things that I am an expert in,  sampling delectable pies & pleasuring women. (not necessarily in that order).

my dyslexia means i read that as sampling women and pleasuring pies damnit

You guys are all bloody legends! What a wealth of knowledge this forum is.

I'm going to slowly digest all the advice here and change my route accordingly. I will have to do slightly different routes there and back so i can try to take it all in!

i don't think you can really go wrong with anything suggested here- it's just a case of trying every permutation on each trip down and back ;)

Depending on the day you are coming up the Putty I would be keen for a catch up @Ian718 and enjoy some of the the journey with you. BTW, the Putty is in the best condition i have seen it for a couple of years, they have hotmix on most of the twisty sections.
