911 Snake Posted 23May, 2019 Report Share Posted 23May, 2019 Hi All, Recently have been spending weekends down Lorne way and have been enjoying a few morning drives up and down the GOR (Angelsea to Apollo Bay mostly). While the GOR is an amazing rd, are there any recommendations on great drives just off it that are a little less populated that people have experienced? cheers, polorot
Big Dav Posted 23May, 2019 Report Share Posted 23May, 2019 I haven't driven it in many years but Skenes Creek to Forrest was a cracker of a road that I remember well. AdRock and Pilko
AdRock Posted 23May, 2019 Report Share Posted 23May, 2019 I like the deans marsh - lorne road that takes you right into lorne. I think you get on it at Winchelsea. Goes past the site where they have the Rock above the falls festival I believe. Pilko
Mike-S Posted 23May, 2019 Report Share Posted 23May, 2019 John Orchard (polorot) is your man for local knowledge, we did a fantastic run around that area last Sunday. Perfect roads for our cars that’s for sure. polorot
Dave997S Posted 23May, 2019 Report Share Posted 23May, 2019 Geelong> Moriac> Dean's Marsh > Lorne Geelong> Moriac> Den Marsh > Forrest> Apollo Bay These are the main two runs. there are a few others the further West you go The back road run to Port Campbell is nice but to get there you go past Colac. The roads around Cobden and Scotts Creek etc
The Caretaker Posted 24May, 2019 Report Share Posted 24May, 2019 Moriac> Deans Marsh > Lorne Also worth a thought when heading that way over summer, as that seems to avoid most of the bottle necks at Angelsea and approach to Lorne.
911 Snake Posted 27May, 2019 Author Report Share Posted 27May, 2019 Awesome, thanks for the recommendations. Sounds like a Aireys Inlet - Lorne - Deans Marsh - Winchelsea loop is in order in the coming weekends Bluegus73 and GTP911
Airhead Posted 27May, 2019 Report Share Posted 27May, 2019 Just spent 3 days in the area based in Colac (did 770ks) on back roads and didn't touch GOR once. No traffic and heaps of fun. GTP911, tomo, 9fan and 1 other

550Spyder Posted 6January, 2020 Report Share Posted 6January, 2020 GOR still good but not what it was due to roadworks / reduced speed limits and of course traffic. Moggs creek to Lorne - great road but reduced to 60 so not what it was, getting caught here = lifetime bus pass Dean's Marsh - Lorne - great roads and can go as hard as you can within the posted speed limit. Be careful of Roos in early morning, and takes a bit of local traffic that can be a bit liberal on observing the traditional stick to your side of road convention. Best done from Lorne side. Skeens Creek to Dean's Marsh - probably the best section to have a crack and stay within the posted limit. Good road condition with mix of second and third gear stuff. Pick of the back roads in terms of twisty stuff. Apollo Bay to Lavers Hill - good roads but nil passing spots early in the drive so don't get stuck behind anyone as dangerous to pass. Quicker 100 kph section before Joanna is smooth and fast. Beech Forrest road C159 - amazing road that is only 1.5 car widths wide, incredibly dangerous in terms of hitting some one coming the other way like a logging truck. Followed the Subaru club through one day, awesome road but you don't want to be first on road. A lot of bark on road. Still can't beat GOR early morning Lorne to Wye River. Provided you don't go silly on the straights can drive at 9/10 and stay within the posted limit, have the car dancing and enjoying one of the best roads around. tomo
polorot Posted 19December, 2020 Report Share Posted 19December, 2020 Did a Lorne run this morning with about 20 cars. then 5 of us continued on to Skene’s Creek, then home via the back road. Brilliant day. James P, JWM, Mike-S and 2 others
