Update to this; the proposed % figures have since been released;

"Currently cars worth $66,331 to $100,000 are taxed at $10.40 for each $200 of the car’s value.

Under Victoria’s proposed tax, buyers of cars worth $100,000-$150,000 will pay a duty of $14 per $200, and buyers of cars worth more than $150,000 will pay $18 per $200.

A buyer of a new BMW 5 series worth $120,000 would pay an extra $2160, and a buyer of a new Maserati would pay an extra $7600."

Ouch. Better get that next P car purchase in before July 1 then...!

Not just Labor. Liberal government here in SA have just released their budget. 'We are pleased to say you can now have a choice with third party insurance on your car rego saving you money...but we're increasing rego, license, hospital parking fees, bus and train ticket prices, Emergency services levy (which they said they were going to abolish) and a few other taxes to make up the shortfall in GST'. The treasurer said on tv with a smile on his face 'Be thankfull it's not more!' I so want to punch that prick in the gob.

Labor, Liberal...F..k em all!  F..k governments and F..k politicians!  They have no f...ing idea what it's like to struggle day in day out to bust your arse only to have them take take take. I'm sure theyll enjoy their $300k per year plus free travel, staff and other 'entitlements' once they retire.

Hey Lee i don't disagree with you however we the public vote for these people, problem is very few of us do any homework as to what people or parties stand for tending to generally vote base on historic family views.

The other thing is you can put yourself forward of course for a public position and if elected can receive the same benefits as these poli's 😁😁

Message is ..... really do your homework before you vote

One positive at least it supports current pricing if you're already in the market.

So this is a VIC state govt  tax... It’s Dan, not Scott!

But this raises the question for me,  wouldn’t ya just buy in Sydney and drive it down...?

Oregon and Washington are neighbouring states.  Washington has a 10% sales tax on everything while Oregon does not.  3hrs drive between Portland and Seattle.  As you might imagine cross state trips for big ticket items happens frequently.

however, moving registration on vehicles from one state to the other involves paying the 10% tax (also applies to ownership transfers on used vehicles).  You can only avoid if you have owned said vehicle in one state for 12 months or so before changing registration.

Vic pollies and pencil pushers will have studied these scenarios carefully and will have a plan.  Would not be surprised if it is tied into rego transfer.

Of course, still waiting for the luxury boat or plane tax.

SD?  Surely they can invoice you before the tax comes in.  Otherwise I'm sure a NSW dealer would like your business.

Well 6 days to go before the biggest rip off by the Victorian State Government I have encountered for some time (besides increase traffic fines, registration).  I thought such tax changes were subject to scrutiny in the parliament. It seems that the labour party has no bounds  and can write their own laws. I hope that all you PFA voters in Victoria kick this guy out at the next election. From 1 July 2019, a new or second hand vehicle valued at $150K for transfer purposes costs an extra $7200 straight to the government coffers. A $200K vehicle  is an extra $9600. The extra costs add no value to the car nor require effort by the government to do anything productive. Seems that highway robbery lives on! Is this the new incentive by the government to stimulate the car industry in Victoria? Victoria - HOME OF THE REVENUE RIPOFF.

Kicking the guy out won't do a thing mate, as the next idiot/party will keep the tax saying its needed for infrastructure etc. We have an emergency services levy here the Liberals said they were going to abolish if they got in power. Now they've not abolished it and now added more increases on most taxes (doubled hospital car parking at most hospitals even for nurses etc) and fines. Why? Because of a $500million shortfall in GST from the federal government. It's ok for them to give themselves a pay rise when there is so much poverty going on, and they wonder why there is now so much crime and a much higher suicide rate which I solely blame on the government. SA government has hit local councils with huge increases in fees of over $200k/year, so who has to pay for that? Council can't possibly absorb the fees, so all rates and service are going up.

What's the incentive to buy a new or expensive second hand car in Victoria now? People will just stop buying them, and I reckon prices will plummet. Seems when Victoria or NSW sneezes, the rest of Australia catches a cold, so its bound to be a consideration for other states to follow suit

I often wonder what's the point of busting your arse every day when it's just not worth it anymore ☹

Gary what have they called it, is it a new tax that didn't previously exist? Or is it an increase in stamp duty only over $150k and then again over $200k respectively? Incidently I've always wondered why our overlords have never increased vehicle stamp duty for about the last 30 years. It's the about the only thing that hasn't risen over decades.

I’ll sell you my car for $149,000 & if you’d like to buy the wheels separately they’ll be $30,000, but of course this will be a seperate deal!!!!!

Ingenious Gary, however I can assure you they will be scrutinizing the value on the transfer which technically needs to be at market. I would suggest that the government will gave a barrage of stamp duty auditors ready and waiting.

Post transfer files will be rife.

Just to clarify, and based on some new adverts quoting the future rises in Victorian Stamp Duty upon a sale of a car and transfer to a new owner, the following outlines the increases.

If vehicle is up to $66331 Stamp Duty is $42 per $1000 from $0 to $66331
If vehicle is between $66331 to $99999 Stamp Duty is $52 per $1000 from $0 to $99999
If vehicle is between $100K to $149999 Stamp Duty is $70 per $1000 from $0 to $149999
If vehicle is $150k and above, Stamp Duty is $90 per $1000 from $0 to $150K and beyond

So Stamp Duty for a new or second hand car at $100K goes from $5200 to $7000, an increase of $1800
A new or second hand car at $150K goes from $7800 to $13500, an increase of $5700
A new or second hand car at $200K goes from $10400 to $18000, an increase of $7600
A new or second hand car at $250K goes from $13000 to $22500, an increase of $9500

And this Stamp duty is already a Tax upon a Tax (GST) upon a Tax (LCT).

I was initially under the impression that the Stamp duty was calculated on the progressive incremented ranges but that is not the case. The flow on will be that the sale price of cars in Victoria in the higher brackets will probably decrease to appeal to future buyers who may not want to pay the higher transfer costs. Alternatively, sale of cars in the higher brackets will appeal to interstate buyers which is good for the sellers as they won't need to provide a Vic RWC. I guess that is where my 996.1 GT3 will end up.

I can Guarantee the grubs in NSW will implement this also up here ,,,,,as I have heard on radio they are crying about the downturn in the housing market and the loss of millions in stamp duty ,,so this and the increase of traffic fines will be next on their agenda :(

We used to live on a main road that had 1000's of cars every day.

To make some extra money for O/S holidays, we started selling Pocket mini bikes .. they were a huge craze.

We were selling them like hotcakes until one day the Department of Fair Trading paid us a visit after a complaint from a local motorcycle dealer (that didn't sell them) made a complaint.

As we weren't a car / motorbike dealer, it was illegal.

We still had approx. 25 left, so the question I asked him was this ... can I give them away?

Of course you can, I can't stop you doing that, he says.

So, off I trot to my computer and make up a little note for people to sign ... you see, every pocket bike came with a very basic tool kit. So when people came to buy a bike I had to tell them that I'm not allowed to sell you one ... but if you buy a toolkit for $399, I will throw in the bike for free ...

Needless to say, I managed to "give away" the rest of them .. and had people sign for that.

All things like the stupid rules and regulations do is encourage people to find alternative ways ...

I doubt Andrews and his Mafia cronies will raise as much extra tax with this as they expect. Without all this LCT BS, prices here would be much closer to the US, and a lot more 'luxury' cars would be sold. I could theoretically afford a new P car, but I'm damned if I'm going to hand over that sort of tax to these criminals. Less new P cars being sold will probably support the prices of the older ones which, will make holding on to them more attractive. It's not going to end well for the dealers or the meddling money grabbing Andrews.

Here in Queensland, dealers have to advertise the Drive Away price of vehicles which includes all on road costs (road tax, rego, safety certs, delivery  etc), though I believe private seller's don't have to comply to this.

Is this applicable in Vic / NSW / SA etc, because if not, buyers are going to get a big surprise when the final cost of the purchase is revealed…. At least here in Qld you can see what you are actually paying up front.

In NSW dealers will state drive away or dose not include Taxes and stamp duty etc ,,generally though there will be a link with online adverts that will tell you the extra costs to give you a drive away price ..

Private sellers Do not have to comply ,,eg If I ask for $150 K for a used car ,,the buy,r then has to pay the Stamp duty and rego transfer on the Purchase price ,,,,,,,Stamp duty can be pretty hefty $150 K is $6600 plus the transfer fee into the new owners name
