KERMIT Posted 3September, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 3September, 2021 (edited) A bit more progress of late with the proper petrol filter found and fitted, the fuel tank flushed out properly and also fitted, so now the engine is running off the tank. We've decided that the interior needs a console, so the production of that will be discussed with the trimmer in due course. We did order the 2 VDO gauges and a clock to be a part of that. I took the 300kph speedo that Adrian required to install today, so another part of the puzzle is complete. Ex Bathurst Champ John Bowe lobbed yesterday and took an instant liking to the car apparently, so its nice that a top line guy thinks what we're doing is an interesting thing. A photo here of the way the front boot space is taking shape. Needs carpet and all the trim for the lights, but we're getting there too. Here's one of the console idea as well. KERMIT Posted 9September, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 9September, 2021 Had a bit of a think about the centre console after looking at Auto Atlanta's site. Though they look really nice, i'm guessing the cost of getting it here would be almost the same as the console, so no go there. Adrian suggested an early 911 console like is in my Carrera 3.0. We'll remove the cassette storage, fill in that area and then fit the oil temperature and oil pressure gauges and forget the clock. tomo, Raven and P-Kay
KERMIT Posted 24September, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 24September, 2021 (edited) Small issue with the speedo not working properly so we've sourced a GPS system that works in tandem with the original speedo. A small plastic jigger sits on the dash and picks up the signal. Consideration was given to the size of the two Oil Cooler Fans and we thought they needed to be more efficient. Adrian sourced some that were made in Italy, just what we required and they have arrived. Next week will see both of the above items fitted along with the driveshafts. All the engine tin and the accompanying rubber seals are now in place too. Ade plans on checking all the front end and tightening up anything that requires it, i'll deliver the wheels and that's possibly followed by a front end alignment. Better think about Max coming down to setup and weld all the exhaust, so we can hang it off the rear of the gearbox. I think a call to the Engineer is not far off after that, so that he can check what we've done to see that its all cool? We also need to run the cool air hose to the dizzies. I think the engine missed this update when in storage? A new belt will be fitted to them. Edited 27September, 2021 by KERMIT wrong detail. KERMIT Posted 26September, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 26September, 2021 Yesterday turned out to be a big day for the 3 of us, the car, Adrian and I. Adrian did a lot of tightening of suspension and other things after asking me to bring down the wheels and the rear lights. He installed the lights and we combined to put the wheels on and they look bloody good! even if I do say so myself. As it was a public holiday, there was no one around so he did about 4 passes up and down the street. Wow, this jigger moves out!!! Always knew it would, but it surprised me. The Harley Pipes are the only exhaust on it at present and it sounded great, in fact if you were outside you probably heard it???? Brakes took a little to bed in but worked a treat, new rear wheel bearings all good, no oil leaks etc etc. Only has 1 seat in it at the moment, so I looked on. No issue there, plenty of time for me soon enough. Gave it a wash and discovered we need new door and front bonnet rubbers, so Auto Atlanta, here we come again. Shit I enjoyed it and Adrian was going to the surgeon to get the smile taken off his face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P-Kay, Dalai and crsedge
KERMIT Posted 11October, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 11October, 2021 (edited) Well the front boot (trunk) space is now finished. The new fans are installed, the thermostatic control switch is connected, the charcoal canister fitted as well as the w/screen washer bottle. Finally the lid of the oil cooler was screwed down, so that's that. Adrian was fitting the oil breather pipe to the crankcase yesterday and I believe that it is finished as well. A while ago I asked George & Mia at Auto Atlanta to only use Fedex for sending stuff as UPS are so bloody hopeless and that's proven to be a good move. A recent order for a new set of door rubbers, front boot space rubber, sway bar drop link bushes and mounts arrived in a week. Once again I have to say what a truly professional job that Adrian is doing and if anyone reading this is thinking of doing a 914 -6 conversion, he has to be your first port of call. Just fabulous!!! I failed to mention Max Hayes (fabricator) and Andy McAllister (painter & body kit fixer) have also done exceptional work and I couldn't recommend either of them more highly. KERMIT Posted 14October, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 14October, 2021 (edited) Yesterday saw some more done, but this time in the cabin. We fitted the bottom panel of the dash which was removed some time ago, then moved onto the idea of a radio. Max got a modern radio with the old look about it sometime ago for me, which has been sitting in the box ever since. Adrian moved the cigarette lighter to it's correct position and then cut the dash and fitted the radio. As it is fibre glass, it only had a flat finish on it, so a quick visit to Joe the Motor Trimmer saw us with a roll of basket weave finish vinyl. It's almost identical in finish to the original door cards. I forgot the two shots of the finished product. Edited 14October, 2021 by KERMIT Forgot 2 photos. KERMIT Posted 31October, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 31October, 2021 Some thought was given to the purchase of a 914 centre console from Auto Atlanta but the size of it would transfer into "costa lotsa" to get it here, so we got a G series console, removed the original cassette storage section and that's where the 3 gauges are going. Sometime ago, I purchased a 914 firewall interior trim which was a bit shabby, hoping that it could be repaired? I took it to Tony the Trimmer and he just said, that's f*+>ed!!!! Next move was to Andy at Fabcoat, as he is a magician with fibreglass. The plan is to use the original trim as a mould, but with a section of the passenger side back piece left out, so that it sits around the engine management system. The passenger's seat will hide it from view. At least that's the plan. I drove down to Hartech a week back, turned the corner and the car was sitting in the sun outside and I immediately thought " what a great looking car" then realised it was mine! It looks bloody terrific if I don't mind saying so myself, particularly the wheels. P-Kay and tomo
KERMIT Posted 21November, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 21November, 2021 Some great achievements this week as a result of Max having to come down South, so he bought all his equipment with him. He purchased some mufflers a while ago and chose those that would provide the best result in the 96db quest. We were at 105db inside the factory, took the car outside and it stayed the same? Enter the Harley Pipes! With Adrian's input as well, Max cut and modified them so that the baffles provided the best result possible and "bingo", we're at 94 and a bit. Sadly, the beautifully US made Billy Boat Heat Exchangers had to be cut at the collector, for the idea to be able to work, given the short distance available from engine to bumper. The Engineer is due on Wednesday for a first look at the car, also wanting to see the Engineer's report from some years ago in relation to the left to right conversion. He also wants to view the last registration certificate which we also have.("thank you Dennis") It's not installed yet, but I have included a photo of the G Series centre console that Adrian has adapted to carry the oil temp, oil pressure gauges, as well as a clock. Another edit! I forgot to include that I went and saw Andy, the other magician involved in this project. As well as being an excellent Painter and Fabricator, he is a wizard with fibre glass, responsible for producing heaps of stuff for the Mad Max Movie Series. The interior vinyl firewall cover piece I purchased second hand was viewed by the trimmer and in his words, its F*'.ed!!!, so Andy has used it as a mould and produced an exact copy of the original. I'll take this to Joe the Trimmer in January, so that it can be covered with foam backing and vinyl. Andy has made it in 3 sections, so that the centre section can be removed to access the firewall door if a belt change is required. These guys are just too cool!!! tomo, crsedge and P-Kay
KERMIT Posted 23November, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 23November, 2021 Called over to see Andy yesterday taking with me the rear bar as it needs painting. Turns out the exhaust comes out under the bar, so no need to cut out anything to fit it. He has almost completed the fibre glass firewall, just requires trimming and that's that. It's ready for Joe to upholster and install. Barks, P-Kay and tomo
KERMIT Posted 27November, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 27November, 2021 Interesting day yesterday. We found out from the Engineer that the car needs to be Complete to pass the VASS test, that is as per in a drive away condition. As well as that, the decibel level of the exhaust was still too high, so Max came down again and proceeded to fix that issue which has now been done!! The plan now is for Adrian to button up as much as he can mechanically, so that Bob The Towie can take it to Fabcoat (Andy) for the body kit to be fitted as well as the trim we removed prior to paint. Then it's off to D&J Motor Trimmers in Moorabbin for the interior trim to be completed. That will include covering and fitting the f/glass firewall cover, carpet and trim. I'll do the speaker covers myself cause its easy! The carpets for the front and rear trunks will be fitted as well. Joe will also need make a console to go over/around the hand brake, so that's finished off properly. All the lights work, so Ade sent a photo. KERMIT Posted 13December, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 13December, 2021 Tomorrow's the big day, as Bob the Towie will be at Hartech at 9.00am and it's off to Andy for the body kit, new rubber seals and fitting of the firewall cover. We need to make sure it fits before it goes to the trimmers. I saw Joe the Trimmer today and I need to call him after the 17th January to arrange the arrival after Andy has worked his magic! Fingers crossed everyone. To those that have followed this project, I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have and the bonus is, you get the buzz without the bills!!!!!!!! There's more to come.so stay tuned. Hope you all have a Merry Xmas and a ripper 2022. tk111, Dalai, tomo and 1 other 3

Thanks for the comment, it's most appreciated after all that's gone on with getting it to this stage. I'd be interested in comparing notes so maybe we could meet up one day? I'm in Beaumaris if your South, but no matter to me, I like driving. (who would have guessed) Enjoy your Xmas. Tuesday turned out to be the day that the car went to Andy. Adrian was pleased to see it gone as he is having the workshop floor painted and less is better as far as cars go! The car will be with Andy for only about 3 weeks so I was able to give Joe the trimmer a firm date in January for him to complete his work. It's looking more like Andy will fabricate the module to surround the handbrake out of fibre glass. He is so bloody talented, the f/glass firewall cover is identical to the original!! We're in the home straight. tk111, GAZ914, tomo and 3 others

KERMIT Posted 19December, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 19December, 2021 Thanks Marty. I don't think that the side view of these cars are their best feature, but I will take the compliment. Standing at 45 deg off the tail light, I think the bulging guards and the fat (ish) rear tyres look totally horn!!!!
KERMIT Posted 15January, 2022 Author Report Share Posted 15January, 2022 (edited) A few changes to the plans I had regarding progress. I'm advised that locally made carpet is definitely NOT the type of carpet for my purposes, so after speaking with George at Auto Atlanta I am going to make patterns of the passenger and driver's floors and post them to him. He will then make a reverse carpet set out of period correct German Loop Pile for my right hand drive setup and send them over. I think installation will be fairly straight forward. Andy has spent quite sometime polishing the car and finishing small details and it's come up a treat. I didn't like the look of the Gold 914-6 badge, just too bright for me, so I took it to Baz at A1 powder coating and the Satin Black fits the rest of the car really nicely. Andy has done a brilliant job of copying the original interior firewall vinyl cover that was damaged beyond repair, in fibreglass. Using the original foam bolsters etc, I'll get that covered in the same patterned vinyl that we used on the radio surround. So, the car is finally coming home on Wednesday and a mate is coming around with his chainsaw to get the smile off my face!!!!!! I'll fit as much of the trim that I can, whilst waiting for my mate to arrive early Feb with the jack and New/Old Stock seat belts. Once they're in I'll setup a date with the Engineer to do the final exhaust DB test, Adrian issues the Roadworthy Certificate and BINGO, a Club M Plate Registration. Gee!! That almost 3.5 year build went quick???? Edited 15January, 2022 by KERMIT forgot photo tomo, Raven, crsedge and 2 others

After that, it'll be at the Beaumaris Car Show in the Concourse in Feb and then at the Regularity Run at Sandown on April 3rd. A few shots following. KERMIT Posted 24February, 2022 Author Report Share Posted 24February, 2022 Well isn't life strange?? Just when you thought it was safe............. Turns out that my mate bringing the seat belts, jack etc back for me, got as far as LAX only to find out that his paperwork is out of order bigtime and has been cooling his heels there for nearly a month! I've waited 3 + weeks so asked him to contact the nearest Fedex shop and just send em! The whole exercise was to save the freight charge ,but that idea went out the window and now THE world's most expensive set of new/old stock seat belts will be here on the 3rd of March! Then it's fitting them, finishing off the centre console gauges and book the Engineer. He (Blake) has been terrific in putting up with the delay and Adrian the same. I will never predict a finish date again and it'll be finished when it's finished???????????????? P-Kay and tomo
KERMIT Posted 30March, 2022 Author Report Share Posted 30March, 2022 Back again and car went back to Adrian on Monday after sitting in the garage for about a month. He's been really busy so we joined the queue which is fair enough. Final fittings now taking place such as heater ducting, activating heater switch as well as some fitting of trim that had to wait until the last stages. The Engineer (Blake) has been booked for Friday morning, so if all goes without a hitch, I might even be able to pick up the M plate on Friday afternoon? I think that's a big ask, but the paperwork and photos required by Vic Roads have been forwarded to the Porsche Club, so if Gary has his paperwork ready for me, I'll pick it up and go to VicRoads in the arvo. Who knows, the car may appear in the carpark at Sandown on Sunday, as I'm helping out at the Regularity 360. It'd be a blast to be able to drive it there but I'm not getting too excited about that.
