Timely discussion... Can anyone recommend a good insurance broker?

987 Cayman S - 32 years old, garaged.

Best I can get is Enthusiast - $1.2k, limited km's, agreed value.

Shannons is 2.7k... Lumleys is 3.9k... Others won't touch.

Will probably just go with Enthusiast, but just thought I'd check any other avenues.

Thanks

Interesting topic, I have have just gone through a reshuffle with my insurance since I purchased a GT car.

I had been with Lumleys SV for many  years and have lots of classic bikes , 2 Pcars and a daily insured with them and was always reasonably happy , when it came time insure the GT3 they said it was too expensive and didn’t want anything to do with it.

A few quick phone calls and it was back to Shannon’s again, they were happy to see me back, values on all the bikes and cars increased to current market values (my personal value) and ended up 30% cheaper than Lumley’s.

i just think it pays to keep them all honest and actively interrogate all options every few years.

Good timing - My insurance is up for renewal, I was insured with Famous  (underwritten by RACQ) for the last 2 years, but this year that raised my premiums by over $1600. Rang them up and they said that RACQ set those prices and there was nothing they could do - So shopping around! 33 yo, 987 Cayman S in Sydney.

Has anyone had experience with Enthusiast? They were recommended to me by a mate, but he hasn't had anything else to do with them beyond paying his premium each year. Their quote is more than half the next cheapest.

Mine is up for renewal, so as usual I shop around..

Currently with Lumleys and they are at $968 with $1000 excess, <5000km PA, no optional extras (Salvage / Windscreen etc), agreed value @ $50k..

I just did an online quote with Enthusiast, they came in at $660 with $500 excess, <5000km PA, no optional extras (Salvage / Windscreen etc), agreed value @ $55k..

I'm jumping ship.

Few quotes now in - 2004 / 996 / Roughly 6k km per year / $1k excess / Agreed value $60k.

Waivered the salvage rights as I dont want the bugger back if its wrecked.

MB: $1250

Enthusiast: $1280

Famous - Joke Quote

Porsche quote pending.

What is wrong with Famous? They used to most competitive and now the worst, I'm currently with them but by the sounds of things I'll be jumping ship at renewal.

How long will they last before going bust when everyone pulls out?

  • 3 weeks later...

Just to update, my Cayman was in the shop for some body work done, and I asked the owner about his experiences dealing with insurance companies.

He mentioned that MB Insurance was great in terms of you get what you pay for, but from his side of things (as a business owner), they can be a difficult company to work with. He spoke favourably of QBE (MB underwriters I believe) who always gets things done quickly. I quizzed him about Enthusiast and he said he hadn't had much experience since they are relatively new.

I do like the price that Enthusiast gave, but in the end I went with QBE as a more established, middle of the road company which gave a decent price and good agreed value. Will reevaluate in a couple of years, hopefully Enthusiast doesn't go down the same route as Famous and pull the rug out!

I spoke to a shop that works on prestige cars and the owner didn't have nice things to say about Shannons. Apparently they try to get the job done cheaply rather than properly.

I have a very similar car to @WOKA (we were looking at the same time too) and had the same price experience. Have gone with Enthusiast. Not driving it much now anyways.....

Not quite following this. Shannon’s provide choice of repairer so you can pick the most expensive panel shop in the world if you like.

That doesn’t however mean they get a free ticket to charge what they want though (nor should it).

I’ve been with Shannon’s for years and during this time have had a few claims. I haven’t been given any reason to look elsewhere.

I did talk to a broker about looking at our cars, and he said don't bother asking him, they can't touch the "specialist" car insurer premiums when compared to the major companies - Allianz etc

This isn't quite right.   A good broker will have wholesale accounts with MB, Dawes, Shannons, QBE, etc...  and be able to do the shopping for you.

I can recommend my broker, call Maja (pronounced Myer) on 1300 227 655 as she is great.

I've been with Famous for a couple of years with a limited KM policy for a SC.  Premium renewal arrived recently and was +50% on prior 2 years which is just a function of the underwriters (RACQ) pricing change - consistent theme with others in this thread.  It's a pretty cheap policy to be honest, so not the end of the world.  MB quote was about the same as the uplifted Famous pricing, but MB won't insure for theft until I install a self-arming immobiliser that disables at least 3 independent points (which I should probably do anyway).  I lost interest at that point and renewed with Famous.  Will have a closer look next year.

My 1999 C2 renewal is up again - Currently with Porsche Insurance, agreed value of $50,700 at a cost of $1312.16

Lumley quoted for a max $47,000 value at $2598.50 (same excess etc)

Shannons quoted an agreed value of $55,000 at a cost of $1505.00 (same excess etc as well)

Mine is a daily driver - cannot bear to see it sitting in a garage not being used 🙂

 Yes and no mate.

When I crashed mine, Shannons rep told me I have shops A, B and C to choose from. Quoting their/my policy with choice of repairer, I had it sent to the best Porsche factory recognised classic Porsche specialist in SA (against the reps wishes as he told me). Body and paint fixed, I'd organised the car to go to Buik Motorworks to have the suspension etc looked at, yet Shannons sent the car to their 'recommended repairer' again against my wishes. I thought bugger it, they know what they're doing, so I left it for 10 days then called the repair shop who said to me "Oh glad you called...Where do you buy Porsche parts from? We have no clue as we've never worked on one" 😳

I had the car removed within 2 hours and sent to Buiks (the shop were glad to see it gone) and then called the Shannons rep, who in no uncertain terms told me I now have made my claim null and void, and will have to do another extra claim for the suspension work, as they'd never used or heard of Buik Motorworks. Bullshit was my reply and the boys did a bang up job as usual.

Rims. 2 of my Ronal rims were lightly damaged, yet the rep said originally I would get a full set of new rims...until he did 3 weeks of trying to find a set globally to no avail, so he'd pay the replacement cost of 4 rims. Ofcourse, these rims are pretty rare for a 911, so he (nor I) could come up with a replacement cost that he would agree to (cheapest restored set I found in the US was $4000US). Anyway, he then reneged and said he'd only pay for the two damaged rims totalling $1500 (I think). Not happy about that, I said to just pay for a set of aftermarket Fuchs (which I sourced for him as he had no idea where to buy them) and I'd be happy, yet he said no, they have to be like for like yet we couldn't find ANY Ronal rims at all. Had enough of the crap, I just took the cash and got on with it. I am told I have 3-5 years to re claim for the rims, yet is it worth the headaches? Probably not.

I'm still with Shannons, as I really can't be arsed running around trying to save $14 on my yearly $450 premium, and I also want to up my value soon.

I just got my insurance renewal emailed to me today. I have been with Ryno for 6 - 7 years as they’ve always had the best deal for my 2 cars ... by far.

They have just done some deal with a different underwriter and my premium went up by $100. Not the worst thing in the world, but I thought it might be a good time to look around.

Called Shannons and got quoted $140 less than Ryno. Well known and reputable, I’ll be jumping ship this year to them ...

Enthusiast ins, agreed value 60k, $90 odd a month, 1k excess, seems like i am doing ok compared to some, oh, 10,000km a year.

Whilst it seems in this instance Shannon's could have done better to assist you, you probably still got a reasonable end result than if you were with another insurer.

I've been with Shannon's for several years and had a few claims in that time. In each instance its been as professional and painless as it could have been. Shopping insurers by price alone isn't comparing apples with apples as its only when you need them (ie when you make a claim) that you really get to see what/who your dealing with. Plenty of insurers will make you jump through hoops in order to make a claim, just adds insult to injury.

No doubt Shannon's aren't perfect but there are plenty of insurers out there who are far worse when it comes to the crunch (pardon the pun).
