The restoration process has begun. It's been 5 years in the making

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the long winded post, but trying to set the scene ...

I purchased my 924 Turbo from @James P in 2016. I have loved every moment with it, driving it semi-regularly. It's a blast of a car to own.

I have always planned and wanted to restore it to its former glory .. it is a bit of a sad sack of a car, falling into the kind of condition that most of them have.

Life and circumstances got in the way of major work to be done. Fast forward 5 years and the time has finally arrived.

It was driven to the paint shop today for a total windows out respray. Seals and rubbers will be removed and then replaced where needed. A painter mate is looking after me in that department. It will also have the dreaded battery tray corrosion sorted and new body foam stuff applied. The opposite side will get the same treatment. All of the dents, scratches and peeling stuff will be sorted.

The front and rear interior seats have been ordered from Germany in the factory finish material. They are pre-made and fitted like a shirt and pants. One of the deciding factors for me in buying this car is that it was delivered with Pasha seats and door cards. I'm hopelessly in love with it.

A new complete carpet set has been ordered and will arrive and be fitted soon.

The other stuff to be replaced (interior bits, dash reskin, etc) will be done over time to complete it's resto.

I have told the painter that photos of the journey are a must and I will post them and update this thread in due course. In the meantime, I've included some before photos. It looks a lot better than it actually is.

The interior photo is what it will be ..

Hope you all enjoy the journey ... 🙂

Awesome Ronny, I’m looking forward to this.

Are you confident you can source all the parts you’ll need?

Thanks Mick .. 😀

I’m not too concerned about most things. A lot of it can be bought either new or used. Some stuff is harder to get than others, but persistence usually wins ..

My biggest concern at this stage is the gearbox. A lot of internals haven’t been available for many years. Other bits are compatible with the 915 box. I’ve been quoted from a company in the US to send me a “rebuilt” unit, but it will only have some new parts and other stuff original. Cost a bloody bomb as well. Not sure which way I’ll turn on that just yet .. stay tuned!

You had me at "Pasha".

It’s a huge part of the reason I bought it! ..

Engine not getting refreshed?  Can the boost be turned up on these?

Not touching the engine at the moment .. it works perfectly.

Boost isn’t adjustable. I’m sure it could be tuned and or fettled for more power, but that’s not on my radar. I could already lose my licence in 2nd, so don’t feel the need for more speed.

For anyone interested ... like all turbo cars of this era, the amount of boost is determined by the size of the wastgate spring.  The 924 turbo uses the same wastegate arrangement as a 930 with a slightly smaller spring (0.8bar if I recall correctly).  Boost can also be increased by the use of a boost controller which can be plumbed into the wastegate circuit to adjust wastegate signal to control boost.

Usually when the boost controller is installed you also install an air/fuel ratio meter as fueling is very important on boosted cars otherwise you'll get premature detonation. My understanding is that the general rule of thumb is that you can't increase boost on a 924 without also adding an intercooler.

I'm currently running at 1bar boost with the above set up.  Thing I find most improved is actually that boost comes on earlier as the waste gate doesn't partially open while boost is building due to the boost controller.
