Towing a 996

Hi All

I only ever towed my A/C 911 backwards on a trailer due to the biased weight.  The 996 is apparently a 50/50 weight distribution - would it be fair to presume I can load it on a trailer facing forwards and getting the back end as close to the axle group as possible?

What are others doing?

I have towed both air cooled and water cooled in my trailer. As well as front wheel engine cars and open wheel cars.

I don’t reverse either P cars on - just drive them on. It’s more about positioning the car to suit your trailer. I have no issues towing front facing. Get the P car as far forward as you can - unless your trailer is single axle only or has been built by a hillbilly- you should be fine.

Try a few different positions and monitor how it feels at speed on highway.

Thanks Jason, I appreciate the advice.  I've only trailered it once after a coil pack failure using a hire trailer and it towed well, but I have a few trips planned when the world again returns to normal and I thought I'd double check.

Yup, solid advice, it is about ensuring the load distribution is correct, and weight @ the ball is optimum. 

On dual axles, you can generally tell by looking at the tyres on the trailer to see how it's distributing

I think more science is advised, that way you could avoid a stressful drive or worse still a crash. I towed my 911 track car with it facing forward safely after getting it in the optimum position.

Just do a search on suggested tow ball weight and 10% of the total towing weight is a good starting place.

Your towing weight may be around two tonnes. Moving the car on the trailer a foot or so can make a dramatic difference to how safe the combination is.

There are several ways you can measure the tow ball weight, even using bathroom scales and a plank.

Shift the car on the trailer, re measure, get it about right and it should tow sweetly.
