911virgin Posted 15August, 2021 Report Share Posted 15August, 2021 hi all should a battery charger be disconnected from the car battery before starting the engine or is it ok to leave the battery charger connected and turned on?
Stephen Tinker Posted 15August, 2021 Report Share Posted 15August, 2021 Yes - disconnect the charger before the starter is activated. The load drawn from the starter motor will pull the current from the easiest rout which won't help your charger one bit even if the current draw is from both battery and charger. Some of the latest current limitation circuitry may prevent damage, but personally I wouldn't risk it.
911virgin Posted 16August, 2021 Author Report Share Posted 16August, 2021 ok, thanks stephen its ok to open the doors with the remote control key with the battery charger connected and on?
Stephen Tinker Posted 16August, 2021 Report Share Posted 16August, 2021 That won't be a problem as the current draw will be very small. After opening the door, you will probably find that your interior lights will go on for a short time and then go off again. Your remote charger will get slightly warm with the added load on it, but that's standard and it will revert to normal soon after....
