911virgin Posted 27September, 2021 Report Posted 27September, 2021 hi everyone on a 993 tip at speeds over 90km/hr i have noted the steering wheel vibrating/shaking in a clockwise to anticlockwise direction and back and forth lasts 1-2 minutes then back to normal what could be causing this and is it anything to be concerned about? any advices much appreciated with thanks Quote
P-Kay Posted 27September, 2021 Report Posted 27September, 2021 simple things are balance wheels. if that does not rectify the problem, then the wheel bearings will be the next spot to check Perhaps jack the car up and see if you can rock the wheel top and bottom, if it makes noise or is easily moved then suggest step 2 first Good luck Quote
911virgin Posted 27September, 2021 Author Report Posted 27September, 2021 thanks P kay its not due to the tyres heating up is it? Quote
P-Kay Posted 27September, 2021 Report Posted 27September, 2021 I cannot say categorically, but from my experience, the two points I mentioned are what I have found to be the cause of those types of symptoms Quote
911virgin Posted 27September, 2021 Author Report Posted 27September, 2021 are wheel bearings a complicated and expensive thing to fix? Quote
P-Kay Posted 27September, 2021 Report Posted 27September, 2021 The biggest pain is the need to re-bleed the brakes and typically......'while you're in there' Quote
911virgin Posted 27September, 2021 Author Report Posted 27September, 2021 ? what do you mean by "while youre in there? what might that cost to rebleed the brakes? Quote
Peter M Posted 27September, 2021 Report Posted 27September, 2021 Your tyres are flat spotting due to being parked in the same position for a period making them out of round temporarily. I had some Kumho tyres that did the same. Only solution is to drive more often or replace the tyres. I’ve never experienced it with other brands. Admittedly a small sample size! First thing to do is check your tyre pressures. Quote
911virgin Posted 27September, 2021 Author Report Posted 27September, 2021 Peter M, this does make sense i need to drive the car more often, wasnt driven for 7 weeks due to lockdowns, raining weather etc i will get TP 's checked Quote
Peter M Posted 27September, 2021 Report Posted 27September, 2021 You could also try pushing the car forward or back by 1/2 metre or so every couple of weeks to minimise the effect. As I said, I changed the tyres and have never experienced any problems since, even when left for much longer periods of disuse. Quote
StevepGT3 Posted 27September, 2021 Report Posted 27September, 2021 Park it on a sheet of plywood rather than straight on concrete if that’s what you're doing, makes a hell of a difference with flat spotting Quote
Merv Posted 7October, 2021 Report Posted 7October, 2021 The fact that it goes away is interesting. Is it sensitive to a particular speed? Are the wheel nuts tight enough? It could also be the lower ball joint or the tie rods. I would get the wheel alignment and balance checked and ask them to check for excess movement in the steering and associated joints. Quote
Joz Posted 7October, 2021 Report Posted 7October, 2021 Had an M5 years ago which did the same. once balanced it returned to being smooth. Quote

OF the two 964 I have owned, both had a 'shimmy' in the steering wheel at highway speeds. Tried, tyres, balance, alignment.. nothing helped. Then I read about the front control arm bushings. I replaced them myself and the shimmy in the steering wheel went away. I used Chris Walrod bushings. tomo 1 Quote
911virgin Posted 29January, 2022 Author Report Posted 29January, 2022 Hey Mike dsilva After driving the car more regularly the issue resolved so I think it was just due to flat spotting.......no tyre alignment or balancing was needed Quote
