997.1 3.6 Engine

How much is a short (or even long) motor from Porsche these days?  Based on overseas comments they were surprisingly "inexpensive" ( in Porsche terms).  I have 6K in mind - might have been UKP - but might have spiked recently.  I know goodwill and car companies (especially VAG) are generally mutually exclusive terms, but who knows if your local dealership and Porsche AU might be able to give you a price break based on a known problem that got an extended warranty in the US.

A very different situation, but the ignition cassette died on my Saab 9-5 Aero at a time when they were under a recall for the same fault in the US.  Saab AU of course denied all knowledge of any problem with them and wanted a huge AU tax on top (a grand or so, about 4x the converted USD price).  I politely documented all of the relevant recall notices, NHSTA description of fault, part number revisions and documented failure modes which matched my experience.  Whilst still denying knowledge of an issue, they replaced the cassette gratis as a 'goodwill' gesture.

This is the mob that Jeff got his Ferrari motor from and they list numerous Porsche engines though no 997 3.6 at present but could possibly source one for you?

How wrecked is your original motor?  What came out through the crankcase?  If it was a rod then presumably you need most of the bottom end not just the cases, if the IMS failed then presumably most of the valves are also bent at a minimum?  The degree of damage guides your options.

Just over 35k for an exchange engine from the dealership.

Is that including heads etc (ie so called long block)?  Exchange is a bugger if yours has a leg out of bed, I was imagining these were outright sales.

Here's $17kUSD + $4k core charge.  I wonder if that means $21k outright?  Still be au$35k odd once landed.

Not a lot of cheap solutions in Porsche-land, and any kind of engine swap will end up costing more than you expect and kill the car's value anyway.

11k EUR from Germany.  I'm not immediately seeing anything about an exchange...

Anything from overseas is obviously a risk unless it's from a very well known supplier.

It's an exchange part so you give porsche your engine (in PET2 it's just called "replacement engine") so it will definitely be a long block might even come with accessories.

I did see the GT3 engine for similar money! :D   It would be tempting but it's the same old thing with any sort of swap - it's always going to be way more complicated than you first think and the end result will still not be worth GT3 money, so you have to tread carefully.  I think there's a guy in the UK putting one in a C2 at present over on 911.uk, it's doable but a lot involved.  I think I recall you have to cut the body to fit the oil tank, just for starters.  But yeah, at least it would be an upgrade after all that cost/effort and far better than the dreaded LS swap.

Given the high production numbers, it's funny there are not more running used engines available.  A quick scroll of fleabay revealed lots of funny engines like Maseratis, AMG Mercs and all sorts,  many under $10k.  Pretty sure the Phantom above would love to find a decent used engine for $10k he can just slot in and drive again.

That's a good resource, no price quoted but here's one:

I thought the 997 3.6's were M96.05 though?  Anyhow, external detail differences to my 996.2 3.6, so seems to be the right thing.

I'm not the one looking BTW, just sticking my oar in.
