Track day fire extinguishers

Most auto shops have them mate. Supercheap, Autocross etc. There's also the motorsport shop, Autosport on Magill road, Beulah Park. You will probably have to screw or bolt it to the floor. Mine is just in front of the driver's seat for quick access. Would probably only put out a lit candle or three, but it's something I s'pose

I bought a couple of Quell Auto extinguishers from Anaconda. Reasonable price and metal double clip bracket.

You just need to figure how to secure in your car. I have heard  good things about KAP Industries brackets. Locally made too!

Have you tried ARB or other 4x4 accessory stores ?

No, but good call😀

Just checked stock levels in Adelaide Anaconda stores. Unfortunately out of stock... But the Quell is Motorsport Australia (previously CAMS) approved.

Thanks, will check it out.

I had a Rennline bracket that bolted between the front seat rail bolts in my 986 Boxster S, saves drilling holes. From recollection came from James @ Autohaus.

That's the solution I'm aiming for, will check it out. Thanks.

I fitted a Kap Industries bracket to my 991 GT3 passenger side seat bolts - easy installation, high quality with supplied high tensile bolts (which Motorsport Australia require). Combine with their extinguisher and shipping is free. However, you need at E12 socket to remove/replace the seat bolts.  Don't use a 10mm socket - many have stripped the bolts trying!!

Are you Guys allowed to use the Fire sticks in SA they meet Aust and NZ standards as required by motorsport Australia  and are far superior than a shit 1kg extinguisher unit with less than 10 seconds of extinguisher time.

The firesticks have 90 seconds of firefighting time as opposed to the less than 10 seconds you get from those useless 1 kg extinguishers people by at Bunnings and Supercheap auto .

If you got a $40 dollar car then buy a $40 dollar extinguisher , just like Helmets and safety apparel , same rule applies when you need it you want it to do the job and protect you and your car ..

I run them in both my race cars along with the 2 kg Fire bomb systems , just gives me options in the event of a fire and some extra fire fighting capability if the fire bomb fails to fully suppress the fire after being set off , I have an additional 90 seconds to fight with before the slow , overweight fire marshals arrive ..compact size can be stored in a door pocket or glove box , mounted to a roll cage or to floor etc well worth the money ..

I do the same thing, I have the extinguisher as needed, but a couple of these in the cars as well.   I'd reckon they'd do better than the extinguisher in case of a fire, but hope to never find out.

Great option, thanks for pointing it out Raven. Will check with the track but they stipulate metal brackets for 1kg extinguisher.

Instal what they require and grab one of these and keep it in the glove box or door pocket  as your primary go to if you ever have to use it , I have seen cars burn after a Driver used  useless 1 KG extinguishers and then stood helpless waiting for the Fire marshals to arrive ..

Like that blue air cooled from WA at the Adelaide rally coupla 3 years ago. Think it was 9 extinguishers used, but it still burnt to the ground

Fascinated by this; I really like the idea.  But I can't find objective reviews relating to its effectiveness or otherwise.  Has anyone any insight?

A note of caution relating to buying off the shelf extinguishers - some might cause enough damage to make you wish you'd let the fire rip.  Apart from the mess that the powder makes, I've heard that certain types leave a corrosive residue so that after a year or two your electronics start failing.  I believe that Simply Sports Cars - Lotus distributor in Sydney - may have the correct type, worth a phone call and a question about corrosive elements.

The purpose of a fire extinguisher in the car is to allow for you, as the driver, to use if required to exit/extract yourself from a car that has caught on fire. Once a car goes up you will struggle with any number of extinguishers to put it out and depending on fuel loads etc. it's a frustratingly pointless exercise - they aren't designed for fires of that intensity.

I was present when that blue car pictured above went up in Adelaide and the only way for it to get put out was with a fire truck. Even then, as others have mentioned above, the chemicals in the extinguishers are so corrosive it pretty much destroys everything that doesn't get burnt anyway.

@sjm are you booked for the GT Circuit on the 20th?

Yes, that’s the one. Haven’t been on The Bend yet.looking forward to a fang without looking over my shoulder for cops and cameras.  Are you entered as well.

Settled for this setup from Autosport on the end.

Second what others have mentioned here - the 1kg jobs are only for small spot/smouldering fires or to buy you time to get out of the cabin.  If the engine area is on fire (and you know what you're doing), you may be able to lift the lid and get a bit more time/less damage prior to a truck arriving.  However lifting that rear lid with a fire is going is a big decision...

You're most definitely not going to put out anything serious with any number of 1kg detectors unless you're right on top of the seat of the fire and hitting it just right (ie if your'e not lifting the rear lid, you've got not chance).

Those sticks are good but, again, need to be applied just right so I'd suggest buying half a dozen and playing with four of them & fires in metal buckets until you're confident using them.  Not much point trying first time when the pressure is on.

@sjm should be a fun day, kudos for doing the GT track if you haven't been there before, there are a lot of corners, best  to start watching a few videos.

I won't be attending on the 20th but am keen in March for the GT track on the bike.

What!!!…it’s not on my satnav😅.       Good idea though, sure there’s plenty on yootoob.

Which is why I recently bought a couple of Blazecut's  https://www.flameout.com.au/blazecut from Mark Clair.
