IanDD Posted 15February, 2022 Report Share Posted 15February, 2022 Probably a new boy question, but is it OK to machine off the aircon v-belt part of the crank pulley on my '84 3.2 911 motor? It's a heavy, solid combined pulley, but I want to make sure it's not acting as some sort of harmonic balancer. Cheers
Peter M Posted 15February, 2022 Report Share Posted 15February, 2022 It just appears to be a workman like solution to provide an extra pulley rather than any attempt at a harmonic balancer. Similarly, Porsche didn't use a harmonic balancer style pulley on either the earlier or later air cooled engines so I think you are pretty safe to machine away. However, what are you really likely to achieve by lightening? What happens if you or a later owner wants to revert to AC? It would be a pain to replace! If you are trying to make your 3.2 more responsive and revy, you need to focus on updating the EFI and ideally going twin plugs.
IanDD Posted 15February, 2022 Author Report Share Posted 15February, 2022 Thanks Peter, my sole motivation for removing the front part of the dual pulley was to make fan belt changes easier. As is is, there's not enough front clearance to get the belt off.
Peter M Posted 15February, 2022 Report Share Posted 15February, 2022 Ian, Do you think the consul mount is somehow damaged preventing the needed clearance? Assuming your belt is the correct width of course!
IanDD Posted 16February, 2022 Author Report Share Posted 16February, 2022 Good thinking. I'll check later this afternoon.
Mike D'Silva Posted 16February, 2022 Report Share Posted 16February, 2022 Remove it if you like. No problem in doing so. However, it shouldn't be restricting you from doing a belt change.

IanDD Posted 17February, 2022 Author Report Share Posted 17February, 2022 Thank-you all. You are right of course. There is nothing restricting a belt change. I don't know why there was before, but there was a lot of rubbish in the engine mount when I took it off. Mike D'Silva and Peter M
