Update on 3 pot donk from Adelaide

Recommended Posts

Well other than the cost which ain’t chump change😢

then the fact they’ve only applied the engine to old tech cars is a bit disconcerting.

Then the total lack of specs?

was getting a bit frothy for a second. But then Nothing.

Bit of info 6 and 9 cylinder motors in the pipe line , I think the 3 banger is 1.6 Ltr @ 120 pony's and a 2ltr @ 200 ponys, Going on them no's the 6 pot Joby 400 pony's , and the 9 pot Joby would be around the 600 mark, Just guessing  but.  :)

Talk to Ron Goodman if you want a first hand experience at what they're like, as it's his 356 race car they're talking about.

I sat with Ron and a gent who has a financial interest in the project for a few hours, and even though I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about with specs etc, it sounded bloody impressive 😁 The 'Zoombug' VW Beetle vert test mule is pretty damn quick, and I'm told the Kombi is no slouch too.

Yeah $35k is a tad expensive, yet what sorta coin are people paying for a 912 or 911 rebuild? Even VW Beetle rebuilds aren't cheap nowadays, so why not have something different if you can afford it?

12 cyl too i read a while back - effectively the engine is a modular 3 cyl unit that can be stacked like radial engines of old.

* 75kg in the lightest spec.

Not looking to pursue it and it sounds very interesting. Would just be good to know about the projects capabilities.😊

Looks like a packaging nightmare to me. Just wait until all the extras are added on.

@OZ930 IIRC????

Sorry but my son is not involved unless he is keeping secrets from me.  Good thought, would be nice if he was.

My son was, up until a few weeks back.  He's now moved on to a new employer/role.

The radial engine is certainly an exciting piece of kit.

More details here:

Radial Motion – manufacturing light, powerful radial engines in South Australia

However I can't figure out why you would want to put one in a car.

The configuration is just all wrong for this application:

  • The front and rear facing inlet and exhaust ports make for a long engine and poor packaging.
  • Laughable ground clearance.
  • Poor inlet and exhaust manifold packaging.  Did you see how they squeezed the exhaust header on the upright cylinder of the Beetle install.
  • Compromised breathing of the heads due to their low rpm aeronautic origin.  Two valves per head even though the later versions of the engine are water cooled!  No wonder it is limited to 100bhp per litre.
  • Unnecessarily heavy due to the 3 cam drives and 3 separate cylinder castings and heads.

Nah, for the same weight and effective length you could probably have one of these at half the cost and twice the hp: Media | Photography - JFC Racing or Atom V8-516b (h1v8.com).  Even an LS engine would make more sense!  (Radial Motion actual use the valves, conrods and pistons from the GM engine!.)

because it makes a good (and cheaper) test bed especially when it is being flogged on the track.

Why do people put V8's and WRX engines in a 911 (or a Boxster 🤔)?

Coz they can

Coolest engine ever to replace the old shitter Mezger in a 911:

I can't even think why you want to put a 3 cylinder radial in an aeroplane.  Surely there is a good reason why no one of note has used that configuration since Bleriot in 1909?  Before you say "Blackburn Thrush" it was only noteworthy for the name.

Love how the supply of the tag turbo cars is limited by the number of engines.  I mean, they are use f1 units!  I know back in those days they had 1 for quali and 1 for race, but still, can’t be too many floating around not already attached to a race car.
