SOLD.... Porsche 968 Manual Coupe

Recommended Posts

I know I’m going to regret this but for sale is my 968 Manual Coupe. I want to offer it to the PFA community first before I try Carsales etc. Genuine reason for sale, I just don’t drive it enough!

Build date April 1992, this 968 manual coupe was delivered new in October 1992 by Scuderia Veloce Motors in Willoughby Sydney. it was maintained during its time in NSW by Scuderia Veloce, Bob Whyms Automotive and Cavaco Motors, all when known Porsche specialists. In 2010 its made its way over to Adelaide and was maintained as documented by Buik Motorworks. I purchased the vehicle in July 2016 direct from Buiks. It was actually offered for sale on this section of PFA by Craig at Buiks along with some other Porsches in the same post. It was as good as described by Craig when I purchased the vehicle site unseen and transported it to Melbourne. I waited about 8 months before registering it on club plates as it became eligible in 2017.

156,000 kilometres with full service history/books and owners manuals provided. I have receipts for all work undertaken during my ownership. As well as servicing, I have replaced some items such as engine mounts, clutch slave cylinder, radiator, power steering hoses, bonnet struts ect. Recently I have also had the odometer repaired as it broke within resetting the trip computer, pretty common for older Porsches. All my trips have been documented via log book and the car has seen very little use in my time (I have never used up my 45 days)

In recent times the vehicle has been maintained by David Brennan at Nürburgring Mechanical, he is happy to discuss the vehicle with any interested party as he knows the car inside out.

Exterior colour is finished in Black (L700) with black cloth Partial leather and Porsche script cloth trim. Both exterior and interior is of a high standard (and its black which is a PITA to keep well presented). All original stickers are still in tact around the body and under the bonnet, no visible signs of any accident damage. Dashboard, door cards and seat trim in excellent condition (no rips or tears).

The 3.0 litre in line four produces 240 PS (177 kW). Changes to the 968’s power train also included the VarioCam variable valve timing system, a dual-mass flywheel, and updated engine management electronics. The 968’s engine was the second-largest 4-cylinder ever offered in a production car, and the most powerful naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine ever sold in a production automobile up to that time. This one goes very well, does not leak any fluid from anywhere and starts and idles perfectly. The 968 utilises the last generation 944 Turbo’s larger 4 pot Brembo brakes as well as upgraded suspension. This car also benefits from a cat back sports exhaust system (less restrictive muffler, done before my time) which gives the car a great raspy note without being too obnoxious.

Everything works including all electrics. Standard features include Power steering, air condition, full electrics with remote immobiliser, 4 way adjustable powered drivers and passengers seats as well as removable Targa/sunroof panel. Original boot net and cargo cover included. I have fitted a more modern Kenwood Bluetooth media player with USB Port charging, however I will also supply the original Blaupunkt Symphony RDS Cassette Radio to the purchaser. Vehicle also still has the original jack, spare wheel, compressor, tool kit and genuine Porsche gloves and cloth located in the boot and the shrouding of the engine bay.

Suspension features (optional) adjustable Koni yellow shocks as well as genuine 17 inch Cup 2 Wheels. (7.5 inch front and 9 inch rears). Tyres are near new Continental Sport contact tyres (225/45 fronts and 255/40 rear). Tyres are 3 years old with 95% tread. Handling is the secret weapon if these cars and the perfect 50/50 weight distribution makes its an amazing experience in the twisties. Being a non Clubsport, the ride is quite compliant and not rock hard whilst maintaining excellent grip at the limits.

I also have a small collection of spare fuses, sensors and switches which I am happy to pass on. Included in the sale is a set of genuine painted headlamp housing covers (originals have minor cracking where someone has tightened to screw too tight).

It really is a fantastic piece of machinery. Considering it’s a 1992 model, the 968 was ahead of its time with a 6 speed manual, Variocam, and ABS Brembo Brakes. 968’s are thin on the ground with only about 12,000 sold world wide with just 68 non Clubsport Coupes coming to Australia (please correct me if I’m wrong on this stat).

Cars is located in the South East of Melbourne and will be sold unregistered (as its currently on club pates). I believe that the vehicle would easily pass a RWC inspection in its current condition. I will try and post up some more pics over the weekend.

Asking $68k

Please Message me if your interested. Peter 0408 133 841

Update

I've had a lot of calls, mostly interstate. A lot of questions asking if timing belt/rollers have been replaced recently. Short answer no, car was serviced last week and they were inspected again. They are both in excellent condition however will most likely need to be done in next service. Price has been updated to reflect a potential future belt change and major service. Price is now $65k

Aust del, very low k's, best colour .............I'd say that's a no brainer for anyone interested in a 968, good buying

Thanks for that Stepo! a lot of guys ringing who have given up on owning an aircooled because of where they are now priced in the market. I try and qualify them before they decide on a test drive. I let them know that whilst its still a Porsche, its not like an air cooled car, so if that's really what you are chasing, you need to save a bit harder. Having said that, the 968 is an amazing driving experience, 50/50 weight distribution handles much better than my 3.2. Big Variocam 3.0 is very torquey and the 6 speed shifts better than my G50 Carrera. My analogy is that a 968 in the 4 cylinder transaxle world is comparable in development to what say a 993 is to the aircooled world (last of the series)..well I think so anyway!

Well it run the same size differential as the G50 but its a G44, very much a completely new box, has more in common with the 016

Lovely 968 BTW, don't think you will have much trouble selling that one

apparently there is a guy in Darwin, super keen, works on an army base, only contactable by email, wants to pay full asking price and use PayPal blah blah blah.....

He's also got a mate that works on an oil rig in Bass Strait, or it is Timor Sea, can't remember which actually 😉

Is that the same one bought recently from Richmonds in SA?

Different car, Sydney owner. I looked at this one earlier this year.

Has not got the clamshell seats, but unlike the Richmonds car these ones were fitted at the factory.

I suspect there will be some "vendor conditioning" happening after a short while. The owner had unrealistic pricing expectations in my opinion, but good luck to him if he gets near that asking price.
