Stepo Posted 2December, 2022 Report Share Posted 2December, 2022 Porsche originally used butyl tape to seal tail lights in these models. Over time the butyl starts to deteriorate and if you notice it coming out from the bottom of your tail lights the seal is probably compromised like mine was. It's worth checking the integrity of the seal by using a hose on shower over the lights and then looking around inside the trunk for leaks. Other potential problem areas can be hatch seal or locking drain hoses. I investigated the optional rubber seals from Only944 but got conflicting feedback on how well they formed a seal and how particular you had to be with placement, so ended up purchasing new butyl sealing tape from Porsche to do the job which has come out perfect, they obviously had a reason to use it in the beginning. The thing with Porsche's factory tape is that you have to buy a large roll (Part # 000 043 172 00) that will do several cars and I have surplus tape if anyone is interested in buying just enough to do the two tail lights, offering for $30 and prefer Melbourne pickup given I don't know how well it will go in the post with heat and potential damage. There's a lot of talk about how messy the tape is to deal with, but I didn't use gloves and had nothing on my hands when finished, it's more like blue tack to work with than chewing gum. I could remove most of the previous tape with a plastic scraper and whatever minimal amounts were left on the lens or chassis came away very easily with citrus cleaner. I then used an alcohol spray on a rag to prepare the surface ready for the new tape. A good drenching at the end with the hose confirmed the new tape works a treat, no more leaks . Let me know if there is any interest, a few pics below for reference. TYPICAL DETERIORATION AT THE LENS BASE ENOUGH TAPE TO DO TWO TAIL LIGHTS, JUST OVER 3m IN A ROLL THE END RESULT, NO MORE GOO Rod C and SteveF
