Car transport Melb to Perth by ship

Recommended Posts

Has anyone shipped a car recently via sea freight from Melb to Perth and advise on there experience details.  I have a  relatively low front clearance (125mm)  and understood it's all care and no responsibility with respect to  any undercarriage / front/ rear  splitter damage and is even excluded from any additional insurance purchased.

Hey mate, I am curious how much is this costing you?

I am looking to move a car from NSW to Perth. I was recommended this.

I have a bunch of quotes and they range from circa $2000 to $6000, Price primarily impacted by level of insurance and extent of enclosure and urgency and heaps of exclusions on the low quotes.  Nearly all added insurance excludes basically any damage that you cant see from a distance and any undercarriage damage , splitters etc if you have low clearance. I shipped cars a few times from east to west and west to east (ship, road/rail and road, noticeble to me front end damaged each time / other issues,   CEVA is a lucky dip, eg small possibility of ship, the more likely  being road/rail or road (have a premium category once car value is above certain amount and thats enclosed )and you can't request a preference.  Rail was a shocker , EG No rattles, squeaks   prior and huge squeeks  and rattles and noticeable movement on door cards  combo of heat and some big rail shunts me thinks.

Ideally I want roll on roll of on a ship but with low clearance all quotes so far say its too low on the front  and splitter would be trashed.

I am waiting on one last quote maybe via ship and will make a decision next week and let you know.

Have done  Palm beach Sydney to Perth with the family averaging 1000km a day.  If I was retired, would absolutely do it with a mate .  Time poor and getting smashed at work so  not enough time to sort out rego', insurance a trip etc but would of been right time to do it and perfect car to do it in as well.  eg just before full major service to  done eg change out all fluids, filters  tyres, rims, full detail etc.   Plus  would of  been an ideal  trip to get to know the car and test the limits of the tacho in all 6 gears given that funds been  transferred having never sat in the model, driven one, or seen the car in the flesh.  Apparently not that many delivered with Oz vins and arguably a better engine note than  any  gt3 at the top of their respective rev ranges. ( red starts at 8500ish and the speedo has more 3series  numbers on the speedo than my 996 turbo apparently)

I understand that if you keep the throttle pinned and engine is bouncing off the rev limiter, you don't need to use the clutch to change gears, so that'll save an extra expense.

Buy me the plane tickets (I'm in Sydney) and fuel etc I'll do it for you. I'll even keep it at no higher than 4th gear to keep the speed down 😁

Ha ha.  PS The main reason I brought the car was for the gearbox so you can use a clutch to change gear.   On the topic of a  Nullarbor road trip, was a bit floored by  a  fellow who was  show casing his fine unique set of wheels at a Joondalup motor event in Perth a few weeks ago with a few fellow members  from a  Perth car club. Bit surprised when he said he just returned a few days prior and had to do a bit of polishing  after doing  a road trip and put on his odometer a  lazy 9000km's in 21 days . Transported the car to the east coast. Drove up the east coast  ( far north Qld) then crossed  back across the nullabor.  The irony was that next to his car  on show was a mint 5l yellow  gated gallardo with about 20000km on it.  His was a bit newer  than the 5l with a few more cubic inches and  about another 300hp on tap care of a supercharger , but no clutch. I have no doubt he was bouncing off his rev limiter on the trip at some junctures  and had a few scuff mark's from his trip.  The owner was closer to eighty than seventy and a car nut ( wouldn't pick it) and said he would not be embarrassed if he  was to line his car up against any of the other lambo's on display in any shootout. Note the display included a more angular  and newer and shinier example of the mark  from the coverted Lee Collection.

Nah, I'm on a beer budget and been fishing off the bottom for a very very long time with no nibbles let alone bites.   I switched / upped the bait against a slightly more powerful fish but same species.  Nowhere near the hp of a blown huracan and  plenty of power beyond the limits of driving skills and what I brought it for.  That said, I'm a tweaker so will get a bit more area under the curve in due coarse but there a few more things ahead on the list to sort out
