FS: 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo Two Tone

I am selling my 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo (Series 2). The car is a very rare Australian delivered ́Two Tone ́ car of which there is believed to be less than a dozen delivered to Australia and even less in this colour combination. (This is anecdotal and cannot be 100% verified by Porsche as they do not have records apparently - But when was the last time you saw one on the road, let alone for sale?)

Going by the paperwork I believe I am the 6th owner and bought it off a PFA member in November 2020. The car was originally sold by John Newell Porsche in Sydney on the 4th of February 1981 with the following details (Confirmed by Porsche Australia):

  • The engine is numbers matching
  • The colour is Inari Silver Metallic/Onyx metallic (Y4Z2)
  • Beige leatherette interior
  • Options:
    • 018 Leather steering wheel
    • 261 Electric LH mirror
    • 398 Electric RH mirror
    • 425 Rear wiper
    • 533 Alarm
    • 651 Electric windows

The 2nd through 5th owners are in Victoria as per the paperwork which comes with the car. Click here for an episode from Outlaw Garage which shows the car with the previous owner. The car currently has 202,000km. During my ownership it has had extensive mechanical and cosmetic work to bring it back to original condition. This includes the following major items:

  • Full repaint to the original two-tone Inari Silver / Onyx Metallic with new decals
  • All new rubbers throughout including windows, doors, rear hatch etc.
  • Engine rebuilt and nickel plated with all rubber items replaced and many new parts
  • Gearbox rebuilt @ Porsche specialist Autowerks including new clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, release bearing and slave cylinder
  • Refurbished turbo wheels with near new Pirelli tyres (< 500km on them)
  • Updated Continental stereo & front door speakers
  • New OEM Porsche windscreen

Many other mechanical components have been replaced or upgraded including:

  • New tie rods and bushes
  • New fuel pump relay
  • New front and rear shocks
  • New exhaust and muffler
  • Under bonnet insulation
  • Timing belt and water pump
  • Many more items with receipts (If it needed fixing/replacing then it was done)

There are also some spare parts which come with the car including a rare brand new crankshaft sensor.

The car has paperwork dating back from 1985 including some original Porsche brochures and two sets of keys. The only non-original item that I am aware of is the front section of the front and rear seats that have been covered at some stage by a previous owner but work with the original brown interior. The dash is in good condition with only a small crack which is unusual for a car of this age. The A/C in the car does not currently work and will need refurbishment. Other than that, the car is very original.

Whilst not perfect, in all honesty this car would have to be one of the best 924 Turbos in Australia with all of the important things done. It will give you many years of enjoyment without the need for major repairs. It is fantastic to drive and hard to believe how quick it is when the turbo spools and kicks in with a shove in your back. It will put a smile on your face (and many others as you pass them!). As with many of us car enthusiasts I have spent more money on the car than I am selling it for (and care to admit). I would like to see the next custodian be a PFAer if possible.

If you are genuinely interested in this unique car, please shoot me a message. I can send through more pictures. I am happy for anyone to have a pre-purchase inspection and can also put you in touch with my guru of a mechanic who has done the majority of the work. $50,000 OBO. Open to genuine offers. Please note that the car is on NSW club plates which cannot be transferred.

I thought that would be part of the furniture for you after putting all that hard work in, hope all works out for you and she goes to a good home.

Thanks Stepo. I will be sad to see her go but I have certainly enjoyed the journey.
