RobCarrera Posted 21August Report Share Posted 21August Hey guys, It's time for some new rotors and pads and was thinking of buying the parts and doing it myself. Just wondering whether the cost is worth it? The plan was to buy the parts from Design 911: https://www.design911.co.uk/p/brembo-brake-pads-and-brake-disc-package-porsche-996-1997-04_2/ https://www.design911.co.uk/p/rear-brake-pads-and-brake-disc-package-porsche-996-1997-04-brembo/ and upgrade to Braided lines while I'm at it: https://www.design911.co.uk/p/goodridge-stainless-steel-brake-hoses-porsche-996---997/ Also adding in these screen for the front intake while I'm buying things. https://www.design911.co.uk/p/front-bumper-stainless-steel-outer-grill-set-zunsport-porsche-996-carrera/ Total works out to about $1,500 plus whatever the duty ends up (probably around $300). Am I really going to save much? My assumption is that to get Autohaus Hamilton etc it would be around $2K-ish anyway! Many thanks in advance! WB997.2GTS Posted 21August Report Share Posted 21August Ring Masterparts/Autohaus, for a package price, you might be surprised how competitive they are for std run of the mill service parts. By the way its an easy job.
Carrera28 Posted 21August Report Share Posted 21August Maybe add these too: https://www.design911.co.uk/p/porsche-997-brake-duct-air-scoop-99734148392-99734148492/?source=doofinder The 997 GT3 brake ducts are bigger than the 996 ones and every bit of additional cooling is worth having. RobCarrera Posted 21August Author Report Share Posted 21August Thanks...will add those as well. Interesting that the left side is out of stock!! There doesn't seem to be really any saving from Master Parts, but at least that's local. Autohaus would most likely be doing the job if I gave it to someone to do. JWM Posted 21August Report Share Posted 21August You can also just buy parts from Autohaus. Love a yellow 996 btw!
GTP911 Posted 21August Report Share Posted 21August Keep each order under AUD $1000 (including postage) = Pay no duty less than AUD$1,000. If you import goods that have a value of AUD$1,000 or less, then there are generally no import duties or tax to pay. The exception to this rule is if you are importing alcohol or tobacco. WB997.2GTS Posted 21August Report Share Posted 21August Most overseas suppliers automatically charge you Australian GST on the parts & shipping.

Yes they (now) do: nevertheless over $1K they also charge GST + import duty.
911CSR Posted 22August Report Share Posted 22August I have bought all these to overhaul my second set of 996.2 C4S brakes and got seals etc from Racing Brake, replacement cross over pipes from FCP Euro and titanium pistons from Silverlake. I was WAY WAY WAY cheaper than any source locally for better parts. None of the parts copped GST or import duty. I actually have 2 sets (steel pistons and standard seals etc) as I was going to rebuild the original capilers as well. JWM
donR Posted 23August Report Share Posted 23August I'd also suggest talking to James at Autohaus Hamilton. They actually have a seperate parts department there now and stock a lot of Porsche parts. James can also get in what every parts you need from Porsche and in my experience prices are a little less than the stealer. Also very helpful with getting the right part and easy to return if not. Unlike some OS sites. Some things certainly better buy overseas but sometimes easier to buy local.
AndrewM Posted 24August Report Share Posted 24August And if you are getting Autohaus to fit them, would let them organise the parts, otherwise if there is an issue with your supplied parts, you have to pay for the swap-out...

It was one of my options to just get them to do it for me. What do they charge to do it parts supplied and all?
donR Posted 25August Report Share Posted 25August I'm not sure if Autohaus stock the goodridge brake hoses but I bought mine from local Competition Friction (V Sport). I think once I added the OS shipping, price was about the same. If you are out that way you can also pick them up.

Send them an email and ask. I have been very happy with the support I have had from them since I bought my 996.
Minke Posted 30August Report Share Posted 30August Friend of mine is restoring 69 911 T and he had a list of parts that he needed. Couple of US sites came to 8000AUD landed. AH was 8500. For the sake of 500 it means anything wrong can be resolved easily. I've been surprised so far with cost of bits from AH. The other option (not tried / tested) is apparently classic cars get discount from dealership.
