iam5peed Posted 6September Report Share Posted 6September I know oil discussions have been done to death on forums but I have a new to me 987.1 cayman with the 2.7 motor. The dealer I purchased from had an oil change done using penrite hpr5 (allegedly). Has anyone used a moly additive in their oil? Some say it will deter bore score and start up smoke, some say it is snake oil. I have a very brief thin blue smoke on start up after it sits for 24hrs. The car has 86000k and a reasonable service history. Should I try an additive or get another oil change done with a heavier oil?
Peter M Posted 9September Report Share Posted 9September Don't get caught in this rabbit hole. No engine oil additives ever Use a reputable oil supplier in the viscosity and API/ACEA grade recommended in your owners manual. Oil is magical but can't work miracles. sjm

Driven DI40 (or DI40 for direct injection) Otherwise Liqui Moly (most of their oil does NOT contain moly despite the name) does sell a moly additive that one would suggest works with their oil. While I do agree a lot of snake oil out there, there's plenty of US based engineering firms that are swearing by moly for lokasil bores. https://www.youtube.com/@themotoroilgeek https://www.youtube.com/@PorscheClubofAmerica On oil

Just hard to know what agendas and kick backs are in play on you tube. I'm leaning towards the Driven product at the next oil change. Just wondering if anyone has used an additive with noticeable results as I don't want to dump the new oil that's in the car unnecessarily. Whenever Lake Speed Jr, Charles Navarro and Jake Raby used to get together and be painfully confident that they had the answers to all Porsche issues, I used to cringe and feel the same way. However since Lake Speed Jr has separated from Joe Gibbs oil and is just operating his oil analysis business and consulting I've found him much more bearable and informative. You may find his recent video on additives useful. As for your question regarding if there an additive that slows or avoids bore scoring I have never seen any data on this. I suspect the particle size of the bore wear material will be too big to be recognised by used oil analysis. However you could track the aluminium wear from the piston skirts but that could complicated by a number of other components running in plain aluminium journals as well. If you are interested Lake Speed details a simple but valid test method to use in his 10 questions video (I think its that one!) Also I notice Nulon are offering $50 mail order oil testing which makes testing accessible. Have you seen what Hartech are recommending?
