First post since joining PFA - My RUF CTR Build

Recommended Posts

Hi my name is Daniel and I have been following the PFA website off and on since discovering it in 2017 and later joining as a member, in 2016 I purchased a 1988 911 Carrera with a fiberglass 959 kit on it with the intention of returning back to factory as I was not a fan of the kit at all but the car was very low millage and interior / engine were very clean and factory original.

When the 959 conversion had been done the rain rails had been deleted so this modification pushed me towards building a RUF CTR style car which had the same modifications and I had always loved the style of the RUF Speedline wheels.

I was fortunate enough to have the use of a friends workshop for the tear down and to start the build as I wanted to do as much of the work myself as possible, but with moving back to FIFO work in WA then a relocation from QLD to NSW it was starting to become obvious the build was going to take a lot longer than originally planned as I was working to a friends advice to get it back on the road and enjoy it as quickly as possible rather than have a project sitting in your garage for years and loose your drive to complete the build.

Unfortunately the car did end up sitting in the garage as other priorities such as building a house took over and when covid hit and I was only home a few times over a couple of years with WA shutting down its boarders more than any other state, I was to later discovered the fuel system had been damaged beyond repair so I used my time at home to work through a slow process of diagnosis and replacement of parts such as the fuel pressure  regulators that I managed to complete removal minimal engine parts by working with a couple of mirrors.

Through PFA discussions I had learned off Autowerks in Wyong being only 1.5hrs from home and had spoken with Ryan a couple of times when I had hit a brick wall working on the fuel system issues that had now morphed to a possible electrical issue that I couldn't resolve after a DME relay replacement hadn't resolved the issue, Ryan believed they could resolve the issue and he provide me with a contact of a local towing service so pulled the trigger.

Ryan was correct and his team confirmed the injectors and a couple of other small issues were to blame so I asked them if they could carry out the work so once again I could have a running car, and it wasn't long after that I went down to Autowerks and was able to hear the car running which is when I met Steve Ostergaard who along with Ryan asked me what were my plans with the car and how long did I think it would take me to finish the build?

It was a simple question and the reality was it had been close to 7 years since I had bought the car and the build was going backwards so I asked the question 'do you guys restore cars'? We do mechanical not body or paint but there's a really skilled bloke a few factory's down from us called Dave at Analogue Restorations and we could ask him to take a look and see if he's interested in the project.

Within a week of the discussion and a meeting with Dave Ryan of Analogue Restorations I had shaken hands on handing over the work and over the following months it became obvious that I could never have matched the skills of Steve his metal fabricator and body work guy who was also fluent in fiberglass which was essential with the front and rear bumpers having to be heavily modified to suit.

December 20th was the date I had nominated to collect the finished car and to Steve Ostergaard's credit after many late nights at work he delivered and I was able to have my longest drive since purchasing the car 8 years earlier. There are still some very minor cosmetic tasks to complete and I managed to locate a period correct RUF steering wheel from France that I installed yesterday, its a great feeling to be able to come home from work and go for a drive!

Great story and a fantastic example of perseverance! The car looks great, well done on bringing your vision to fruition as it certainly started from an abomination!!

Is it a factory RHD? Aus delivered? The interior looks to be in great condition and really well completed by the addition of the Ruf steering wheel! 😎

If it was Aus delivered think I would have gone back to 100% factory inclusive of rain rails as the car has less than 36k on the clock. PRT Sydney completed the conversion and during a conversation I had with them they were confident Porsche would struggle to spot it wasn’t factory right hand drive. Appreciate your interest in my post and your feedback, cheers Daniel.

Awsome Daniel, car looks fantasitc !

I've been a customer of Autowerks for more than 20 years and recently used Analog

when I collected a roo in the 911, both great businesses to deal with.

Enjoy your car.

Thanks for the positive feedback, I think your car was just ahead of mine if it was the earlier model silver 911? Can’t agree more about the passion for their trade and workmanship of both Autowerks & Analogue, would have no hesitation recommending to others.
