How did you collect your Porsche?

Recommended Posts

As I near Friday where I'll be driving my P home from Sydney, I got to wondering how far everyone on here travelled to bring their car home.

I know a guy on the MX5 forum bought is black MX5 SE in Brisbane and drove it home to Perth!  Now that is keen (black is rare in these turbo 5s)

So come on, spill it - where'd you get your Porsche from and how far did you have to drive it home?

The previous owner of "Nelle" drove her into the city to my office and parked her in the underground car park.  I did a walk around and we exchanged paperwork.

I strolled down there after work and drove home, coincidentially, my general manager just happened to be getting into his BMW at the time.

B)   Ahem!!

It wasn't until some weeks later, I found out that in the process of delivering the car, the previous owner had driven across the Harbour Bridge on his way into town, without a toll tag.  The resulting bridge toll was sent to me to pay, a massive $3.50!  Things have a way of working out as I found at least $7.00 in coins under the seat and mats when I was cleaning.

On the way home, I clicked on the radio....the first song I heard: "China Grove", the Doobie Brothers.

Dover at the bottom of Tas to Newcaslte in NSW via some nice roads. Details are in my build thread but I clocked up just a tad under 3,000klms from picking it up to getting into the shed at home.

One of the best trips of my life and I'll never forget it.

Picked mine up in NSW, spent a few days in Syd, Bondi & Manly before the drive back to Melb.

Great weather had the roof off for the entire time, car didnt miss a beat, nor did it get impounded for exceeding the speed limit!

Caught the 6am flight from Mel to Sydney. train from Airport into the city walked to the previous owners office. Drove the car round the block, climbed underneath and had a look around around. Went to the bank with him with cheques to clear the finance and was on my way down the Hume by 10am.

Like T, I smiled all the way home. One of the best days I have had....

Mine was sourced from Perth. I had a transport company that specialises in moving cars pick up from the previous owners house on a Monday morning and at around 8:30AM the Friday of the following week they delivered it to my work. That's when I started to smile, haven't stopped since!

Did i miss something?? Have you taken the plunge Amanda??

Danny

Hi Danny,  yes I have! I'm buying a 987 Boxster from Sydney. Arctic Silver with Terracotta leather trim :) just under 48,000km on the clock!

Wow, apart from Caver (and Tomoaus but his car still had a big trip)... seems nearly everyone so far, has done the drive home.  2 sleeps for me.. I'm getting excited and a little anxious too.  I'm not too good with directions, hope the PCM Sat Nav works well (and my iPhone and the spare Garmin I'm taking for this very reason!)

I'm catching a 6:40am flight Friday, then train in the burbs to meet the seller.  I've not seen the car yet, I'm going all by what Porsche Parramatta found on the PPI they did.. which by all accounts, is not much at all given they are fussy!

The previous owner decided a drive was in order and drove it from Bairnsdale, Vic to Canberra, where my girlfriend and I met him. We flew down from Newcastle and drove it back from there after an enjoyable weekend.

i picked  up my 912 in the hills behind Byron Bay in late autumn - drove to Ballina where it had a major serivce - by an experienced AC mechanic. With a clean bill and and empty pocket I fueled up answered some questions by some equally struck pimply boys (could have been referring to myself couple decades back) and motored off. (2pm)

the drive south was a hoot picking up hitch hikers, speaking with Stan Pobjoy detouring the long windy ways where I could, quaffing pies and red bull ever  frustrated by the road works nth of P Macquarie an epic drive into the darkening night  that gradually got colder then freezing as I realised the heating  wasnt working. Stoppped at a late night woolies 2 pairs of trackie daks and on again cruising past overladen magna wagons with dumbstruck kids looking on as I realised the '12 was belching fire and brimstone as i decoked the engine. I hit Sydney in the early hours got lost pulled into manly for a couple of hours sleep and left for home.

car ran fautlessly for long extended hours at or only just over the posted limits :)

Amanda if you are driving south dont take the hume where you can easily avoid it  - there are some great roads to be found detouring via cooma

cheers

Sounds like a great drive back Michel!

I just want to take the most direct route back.  Also, would rather not be driving at Kangaroo night time. Hit one before and it wasn't pretty for the roo or the car!

I'd had 2 Porsche's previously and sold them.  My wife got tired of me pressing my nose on the showroom window every weekend.  "FFS buy another one!"  (Not quite what she said, she's a lady)  Went in to the showroom, the 3.2 Carrera had just been launched and there was just one - the demo one - which I drove.  Told the salesman, "Yes please, but I will buy a Ferrari if you tell me that I have to wait a year for mine".  Understand that this was deepest, darkest Africa, - Porsches did not grow on trees.  (Neither did Ferraris) 12 - 18 months waiting time was quite normal.

"Hmmm." says he.  "Come with me".  In the dealership's yard was a container just arrived.  While we stood there, they opened the door and rolled out the first 'stock' 3.2 Carrera to arrive.  Covered in yellow goo to protect it for the sea voyage, it was like watching the birth of a child . . . . .

"I should not do this, but I know you, you can have this one straight away."

So, that was zackerly 29 years ago almost to this day, in May 1984.  Mine is a one owner car, only driven by a retired gentleman some weekends.

Congrats Amanda. That's great news and finally your journey into actual P car ownership is about to begin :)

My trip home was just across 20 ks across town but I will never forget the nervous feeling of driving her for the first time as the owner. Because I did not want to get caught speeding on my first trip, I stuck to 60Ks the whole way, and thinking how slow she felt, only to find out a few days latter when I checked it with GPS, that my speedo was 10ks out and so I had driven back at 50Ks lol

Flew to Melbourne from Canberra on Good Friday. Owner picked me up off the plane, quick drive, deal done. It was a beautiful sunny day.

Drove home with my favourite CD's playing, great chance to "bond" with my new family addition. 7 hours of sheer heaven. Rang my wife and told here I was going to continue to Sydney as I was having so much fun.... (I went home to Canberra instead).

Gave the car a wash, put the kids in and we went for a drive. Drove the car for about 9 hours all up that day. One of my best driving experiences ever.

Stood in the garage for about 30 minutes that night, beer in hand, walking around it just staring at the car. I couldn't believe the piece of mechanical art in front of me was really mine, I really owned a Porsche. Slept with a smile like a kid on Christmas night.

You are in for a treat Amanda, have a great time and stay safe. :)

I bet you go out to the garage that night to see it, at least once before you go to bed ;)

Like T-Man said,

Bought mine sight unseen from Sydney, did the road trip home that night and the smile is still firmly planted.

It's a great moment and one you will always remember Amanda.

Bought mine from Adelaide where it was shipped over by truck. The truckie knocked on my house and asked if I was waiting for a Porsche. He opened the truck and slowly reversed it onto the roadway in front of my house. Big smiles. Threw my 3 Year old in the back and went to show parents in law who live 500 metres away. Stopped in his driveway and battery died. Had to get a new battery installed. Not a very great way of introducing my relos to my 'enthusiasts car'

When I got it back to my house, I would sneak a look out the window just to look at it.

AND I still find myself with a stupid looking grin on my face when I answer that question.... 'what car do you drive?'

Picked up the car from Gosford, gingerly driving up the expressway Nth.  Was so engrossed I took the wrong exit and drove the back roads home.

Packed the car and off .  Stopped for fuel, girl behind the counter was all gaga about the car, flashing her ample assets at me, didn't know where to look, the car or cleavage...........

Anyway continued the drive (alone in case you are wondering) watching anything that came within 100 metres of the Porsche, now the stupid grin started as I relaxed a bit.

Driving through ST (notorious radar trap) in a slow line of traffic and guess which car was pulled out of the line for a "RANDOM" breath test.

"Have you been drinking sir ?" came the obvious question.

"Not when I am driving this thing !" came the answer, "only picked it up today"

Test done "you're fine, have a good trip, nice car"

She was cute too !!

The stupid grin returned and stayed all the way to T, impressed by the ease at which the P coped with hills, handled and comfort.  Really glad to be back in a performance car after 2many years.

Parked in the driveway, took photos and when cool, gave it a pat and put the cover on.

Woke up the next morning looked out the window.  It was still there, woohoo ! Not a dream.

Still  :D
