This one's a looker... Max visual impact! At 68k I think it's overpriced of course, being a lefty righty etc... but if it's all been done well and in particular the body and paint done as great as it looks in the photos well maybe with a bit of a tyre kick it's a great basis for a nice hot engine replacement and a few improvements (seats!!!) to end up with a really nice semi hotrodat a reasonable price.

I guess I was on the ball thinking it's overpriced - paint and body not as impressive in the flesh?

I saw it in the for sale section at Gosford in December 2016,  but didn’t have a real good look. A car like that even with its flaws shouldn’t take that long to sell

996’s really do look good in red! This is a tidy looking turbo

I can now recall seeing it there in April this year, and I did think it wasn't a particularly good effort, even if I did like the colour

Look at the close up of what I assume is the bonnet badge. Looks like two rusty holes either side of it - presumably the wrong size badge?

.... and the paint around the Made in Western Germany plate in the last photo. Or am I being picky?

Yep, rough but acceptable on a cheapish hotrod but also maybe indicative of lots of other parts of the paint, and the conversion, and the, and the, and the...

Anyone looking to snare a well priced 986 Boxster S at usual ks for around the low 20's mark should open the wallet a bit more and jump at this. Stunning cond and full Dealer and Pcar specialist history and an easy straightforward buy from a dealer.. ,drive away price 32k, with 500 0r 600 off that's about a 30k price. No affiliation.

It’s cool yes, but a good deal? As an engine swapped 76, I really don’t think so... if you waited for a 3.2 that doesn’t have an owner deluded about what it’s worth, you could buy a solid example for a only little more than the asking on that yellow one; ie the import 3.2 that Simon recently sold, that was a well sorted car by PR tech, ticked all the boxes.

I’m talking early 3.2 not G50

True @edgy, I too dont think its worth the money either, though we could say that about all Porsches (I still don't and never will understand why they're so expensive) Some people just can't afford to wait or cough up that extra few grand, so they settle for an import/bastard car, and this yellow one would be at an attractive price point to quite a few buyers.

It's an interesting topic.

I'm looking to own my first Porsche, having recently sold a Peugeot 404 which I did a bare metal rebuild to.

Now I want something cool, like many, I've always wanted a Porsche.

I've been watching market for 12 months, kick a few tyres, and now I'm ready to dive in, but I'm struggling with the price points. $80K +/- gets you an average air cooled car, less than that your looking at something that needs some TLC, not a bad thing, 40 year old area. $100K plus seems to get a really nice, quality car. $80K also puts you into 997.1 territory. More modern and easier to drive, possibly more reliable. The 996 market sits between $50-80K.

There are many cars that have been sitting on CS for over 6 mths, some over 12 mths, are the owners just waiting for a novice to bite, are they over priced.

I'm not loaded, and will only have one Porsche at a time, maybe only one at all. I love them all.

The 912/911 I mentioned in March is still available at mid $60K now, maybe worth another look.

Just saying.

Cheers

Sure, this 76 would be a good car for someone, at the right price.. I do think its cool, but you know how the market is! Seldom do you hear the typical buyer say " oh you've put a late model motor in it, I'll pay more for it" which in other circles is a good thing. Yeah I dont get it either

Honestly, I am pretty jaded by the AC market.. yeah they're cool but when you compare it to modern examples for the $$$ its a hard conversation to have, especially if you can only chose one.

Don't get me wrong, great cars still command strong prices and move fast, but so many sellers have not accepted the market correction or the fact the car they are selling is just not what most people want i.e. the plethora of 80's cabs asking north of $80k...

Again, it depends how good it is. A clean 912 with good drivetrain etc should be north of $80k, so do your due diligence with that one, as engine rebuilds are $15k and up depending who does it. Have heard quotes in Sydney being over $25k! ? That's just extortion.....or the Sydney cost of living tax ?

If I had $70-80k to spend, I wouldn't be buying an air cooled unless it was pre 73 (converted doesn't bother me) and cheap, so I'd be looking strongly at a nice 996 etc

Yeh, that's the problem right there - 1 just isn't enough! Safe to say my children won't be attending any private schools and their diet consists of toasted cheese sandwiches, hopefully they agree its worth it. :D

Ah yes, the wonders of the movie business, all smoke screens and make up. Shannons even provided food for the day hence why they were not looking overly malnourished.

Pizza .. another cheese and bread food staple , dont wanna get their palates too excited or over educated. I guess you are teaching  them also that faint oily smell and the weber petrol aroma is daddies aftershave  and learn to enjoy.

If you need any guilt counselling Im available for a cheap off peak rate later today or suggest you go for a long drive :)

It's interesting that you raise a 996.

I think 996 Turbo tiptronics are great value. One of the better looking 996s and great all around performance.

I raised this with the fiancee who then asked me, won't you miss a manual? I think she raises a good point.

I think the problem that many 'first timers' have is choosing which one to buy.

Each time I hear an AC 911 the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, but their values are skyrocketing. Most I think want an air cooled (or a GT3) but can't justify the spend when you can get a much newer 911.

Hopefully when I am in the market, I will find a 911 that will tick many if not all of the boxes. Perhaps a 2.7 911S sporto ?
