Totally confused at 930 pricing

First post. Returning to AUS after four years overseas enjoying what appears to have been discount Porsche ownership.

Apparently like 80% of site users I am in the market for a tidy 964 / 993. After two weeks of searching I am in the foetal position around (a) apparent lack of tidy cars and (B) air cooled pricing that appears to have missed small going on such as GFC / the advent of modern production techniques / a little concept called depreciation. Damn this air-cooled sickness. Enough of my 'life's not fair' rant.

While I am getting my head around the 964/993 market, naturally I am looking at the 'what else for the money' options. While NA 3.2 nine elevens appear to be holding their values with very tidy cars $50-$70k, seventies and eighties 911 turbos appear to have a massive price range with several in the $40k-$80k range.

Are these simply rough cars with mixed history? Does the halo surrounding NA air-cooled cars not shine as bright on the turbo cars? Does the potential of blue smoke, hands covered in oil and a trip to the NAB to refinance the mortgage destroy resale value?

What am I missing?

I dont understand 930 pricing either. I kind of feel like there is no market for the 930. There seems to be very few buyers so how do you put a value on what they're worth. People seem to be advertising them for what they think its worth but no one seems to be selling them. A few years a ago, some friends of ours had their Aus delivered on the market for 2 years. They eventually traded it in for $40k. I considered a 930 for about 5 seconds but was turned off by the maintenance costs which are supposedly double the 3.2. The other concern was the difficulty in selling it down the track.

By the way, don't be fooled by the two 3.2s at $70k. They're dreamers or have them advertised to please their wives. $50k will get you a good Aus delivered 3.2.

Haven't really experienced double the maintenance costs, A little extra labour maybe because of the extra "junk" that has to be removed before getting to anything but thats about all.

Maybe when things start to break this may change.

This is probably a bit simplistic but besides the turbo, waste gate, intercooler, what's it got that any other Porsche doesn't have ?

Maybe it is the 4 speed box and the widow maker reputation?

I love 930s. So much of the 3.2 reputation is gained from be turbo. When glossy posters were printed in the 80s, it wasn't narrow bodied tail-less Carreras they chose for subject matter. The 930 was the halo car which lifted everything.

As for resale values, who knows. The market is so sparse and sales rare enough that it is hard to say. I do know that the us market attaches much less of a premium in dollar terms to a turbo, but maybe that is just a bigger supply. Aust delivered good cond turbos are few in number so if you want one you've got to pay.

Make mine guards red with a fat pipe and a RUF 5 speed :)

The 930 is my dream car, I love them more than any other Porsche, more than any other car actually....

The one here in the ACT for $40k is a 1976 USA delivered Turbo, that was imported, converted and had the interior and running gear from a 3.2 fitted to it. Still a nice car, but a long way from how Porsche intended it to be... I looked at it, but as I still have my 944 to sell, the 930 was imported and converted, etc, no approval was given from she who must be obeyed.

I missed out on a 1980 930, UK import, last year. Nice car, sold in the low $40k's, wife said no. I really wish I had bought that car.

I'm guessing (Happy to be wrong), that $55k - $65k is for a nice car. $65k - $85k for an exceptional car. I've seen a few amazing cars for about $130k, I have no idea if they are worth it..????

Is the ACT car your referring to is the one you previously posted? If so, there is little point in referring to it as one or using it for comparisons - you would spend tens of thousands to make that back into a 930. If there is not such thing as a cheap Porsche there is definitely no such thing as a cheap 930. I personally know of a very clean import that sold at 80k + and that was a good deal for the buyer, don't be fooled the good cars on the market find buyers and they aren't going cheap.

When I was looking for a 930 there were a handful of cars that just sat for sale for what seemed like forever !

The good cars sold quick, sometimes within days, some had crazy money on them and did seem very overpriced with the sellers obviously not in any hurry to sell.. When I did buy mine it was an import that was in mint condition, an 89 5 speed black on black ..

It was the perfect car, modern enough with electric everything that still worked without fault, 5 speed G50 box which was just beautiful.

Mine had the K27 Turbo which was better on the lag side of things and when she came on, make sure you're pointed in a straight line ..

Unsure of the previous owners mods but the car was putting out 400-450 HP and was just an absolute blast to drive -

It had an over boost problem at one stage and the mechanics I was using couldn't work out why, it would boost to almost 2bar (aftermarket boost gauge fitted) - this was bad for the car and was fixed within days but OMG that one time it came on boost in second gear and just lit up the rears before finding traction was amazing - probably an extra 100 hp or so ..  Just insane ..

I still think my 930 was faster than my current 996 C4S, whether that's because of the different power delivery in a car that weighs nothing or not, maybe it's just me, my 996 is fast, but the 930 was scary fast ... I still miss it ... I have the hood crest that I replaced sitting on me desk, so in some way she's still with me, oh and a set of Rear spacers AND the oil gauge I replaced !

So I paid 50K for mine and it was in amazing condition, I sold it for 65K after new wheels and getting it running the way it should have been - I would have spent 15K on it in the short time that I had it.. And only sold it because I was offered good $$ ..

The Porsche 930 - a very special machine, not for everyone but I loved mine !
